Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A City in Tennessee Banned Public Homosexuality—and We All Missed It
A city in Tennessee is using a recently passed ordinance essentially prohibiting homosexuality in public to try to ban library books that might violate the new rules.
Murfreesboro passed an ordinance in June banning “indecent behavior,” including “indecent exposure, public indecency, lewd behavior, nudity or sexual conduct.” As journalist Erin Reed first reported, this ordinance specifically mentions Section 21-72 of the city code. The city code states that sexual conduct includes homosexuality.
Inter arma enim silent leges… So, how long do you think it’ll take before it’s revealed that one of the Reps who pushed for this law to pass turns out to be a sex offender themselves? It seems to be quite the pattern that the people clammering the loudest for hiding/flat-out exterminating non-cis individuals under the guise of ”They’re all groomers and rapists!” turn out to be the groomers and rapists.

Every Hero has his own way of eating yogurtMike Johnson: "I denied the 2020 election and tried to help keep trump in office, surely when I'm elected as speaker I won't be turned on."
"Passeses the Stopgap bill that doesn't have anything that could forward the republican agenda, gets turned on anyway."
Johnson: *Surprised Pikachu Face*
Watch SymphogearWhich is pretty obviously distraction smoke and mirrors since the Senate is controlled by Democrats who aren't going to take just any excuse to remove the guy, and I'm not sure they would have the numbers in the House either to even impeach. But, hey, distraction.

We're making progress, folks.
23 more days and Speaker Johnson will have outlasted Liz Truss.
A hopeless mess in a kernel of truth.Earlier this year, videos surfaced on Chinese social media claiming pandas returning from the Memphis Zoo were being abused. Partially fueled by Chinese state media, the claims went viral.

Learned something new: there's a group in Oklahoma that lobbies for lessening penalties for getting caught cockfighting and the state governor is getting flak for supporting them.
They also publicly agreed for China to clamp down on Fentanyl exportation, which had made it's way to the US and caused numerous addictions and deaths.
And there was agreement to begin talks concerning "risks and safety issues" around AI.
In their private session, Biden appealed to Xi to use his influence to try to calm global tensions, particularly to try to pressure Iran not to widen the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Nothing really changed regarding Taiwan or sanctions, though analysts say that the meeting by itself would go some ways to calming investors who are increasingly jittery about China's struggling economy.
The official, who requested anonymity to discuss a private conversation, said Xi was embarrassed, and he admitted that he had forgotten his wife's upcoming birthday because he's been working so hard.
Pg. 35-36: "After the $50,000 from Red Stone was deposited into Representative Santos' personal accounts, the funds were used to, among other things: pay down personal credit card bills and other debt; make a $4,127.80 purchase at Hermes; and for smaller purchases at Only Fans; Sephora; and for meals and for parking."
So basically, he used campaign funds as though they were his own personal money.
Coincidentally, "George Santos won't seek reelection after House Ethics Committee report"
, according to the Washington Post.

Piqua residents demand answers at town hall after years-long lithium-ion battery burning program.
Residents came to us in September concerned about the water, air, and soil after the city had allowed lithium-ion batteries to be burned near the Great Miami River for the past five years.
Oh no! We voted for de-regulation and now we want to know why big government did nothing!
More women join lawsuit challenging Texas’ abortion laws
When Kimberly Manzano’s doctor first noticed some irregularities with her pregnancy, she turned to God, praying constantly for good news. When the diagnosis worsened, she and her husband sought comfort in the Bible’s Book of Hebrews — the book of hope.
Manzano and her husband, both devout Christians, decided the most loving thing they could do for their son was terminate the pregnancy. It was a difficult decision for the couple, who both considered themselves anti-abortion before this.
“I was grieving, I was processing all of this, and then I was also feeling like a criminal,” she recalled recently. “It’s dehumanizing … and it shouldn't be like this for health care.”
Pro-life women in Texas are on the find out phase of the policies they supported.
First in indoor plumbing, Von Ormy sees potential end to long wait for sewer system
Businessman and Houston native Casey Homer, age 33, was elected mayor in May. He succeeded Sally Martinez, who served for six years following Von Ormy’s early years as a “libertarian experiment,” when a previous administration sought to avoid big-city taxes and regulations.
Libertarian named Homer finds out that taxes are like, uhm, needed to run cities and stuff.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Book Snub Sparks Fury: 'Censorship!'
According to the Washington Examiner, Hudson Booksellers said in an email to Donald Trump Jr.'s Winning Team Publishing of its MTG book: "We wish you luck with your publishing endeavors, but we will not be carrying your title."
The party of book bans and allowing business to discriminate angry over private companies not wanting to carry their books.

Here's a vid by Some More News about US conservatives' offensive towards restricting women's reproductive rights:
Although the video was disturbingly dark and depressing despite delight demeanor...after seeing all these massive Republican defeats brought about due to the issue feels...almost karmic.
(Seriously, abortions should be legal, why the hell are we as human society STILL arguing about this in 2023-ah wait, there are flat earthers too)
Also, I'm not surprised but still unnerved about how Ohio republicans and conservative donors outside the state are pulling all the stops to try to push through abortion ban despite its constituents' democratic opposition.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.
