Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I do believe that people did pay attention to the 2016ish primaries. Having said that, there's a pretty big difference between 2016 and 2024.
Leviticus 19:34
And as another point of note, his presence and constant media attention is why people are entranced by him-if he's locked in prison or Mar-A-Lago, he can't get to anybody and news teams will have to jump through a dozen hoops for a single interview, which means his fans will slowly forget him and how he made them feel, so his support won't jump back like all the last couple times he got in controversies.

Just as a reminder, the closest Senate races in the 2024 elections will be the Lean D, Toss up, and Lean R races. Starting from the most competitive, those are Arizona (Rubin Gallego), Montana (Jon Tester), Nevada (Jacky Rosen), Michigan (no nominee yet), Ohio (Sherrod Brown), Wisconsin (Tammy Baldwin), and Pennsylvania (Bob Casey Jr.).
If we win all of those seats and replace Kyrsten Sinema, the Democrats will have enough votes to get rid of the filibuster. This will allow us to get a lot of things done, like gun safety and unstacking the Supreme Court among many others.
So here's one thing we missed by being completely uninterested in the Republican debate.
Globe and Mail: Vivek Ramaswamys wants to build a wall on the border... Between the US and Canada.
Y'know, the longest continuous land border on the planet.
His justification is that a lot of fentanyl (enough to kill three millions of Americans) was seized crossing the northern border last year (except he's wrong, two pounds of fentanyl were seized entering the US from Canada last year).

The Canada/US border does have some smuggling happening, but one's pretty minor and the other one is coming from the US. Some people try to smuggle marijuana over the border (totally pointless in Washington and most of New England) which has an easy fix, and there's a large illegal gun trade smuggling guns from the US into Canada.
A wall would be completely useless especially because most of the border barely has any activity at all because it's super goddamn far away from anything of note.
Drag him to Niagara Falls and ask him where he'd even put it. Also, rub in his face that Niagara Falls, Ontario is (superficially) significantly nicer than Niagara Falls New York and make a big point about how building a wall would keep Canada nicer and block out the American riffraff.
(I'm completely joking)
Speaking of fentanyl, authorities are investigating envelopes filled with the drug
and other white substances to election offices during the voting earlier this week. Offices in Georgia, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington all received the envelopes, or had them intercepted by the Post Office before they reached their intended targets.
One contained a letter saying "End elections now."
Another had this interesting bit:
The letter featured an antifascist symbol, a progress pride flag and a pentagram. While the symbols have sometimes been associated with leftist politics, they also have been used by conservative figures to label and stereotype the left, and the sender's political leanings were unclear.
It's interesting how that letter is almost imperceptible from any other shmuck trying a really bad frame-job.
In fact, I'll just go ahead and lay my bets on this letter coming from no such leftist (in any sense of the term beyond being left-handed). "We are in charge and we don't need them" sounds like the sort of thing that somebody from the Alt-Right thinks anybody opposed to them would say.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.

I dunno why I would be willingly to subject myself to watching what a bunch of twits in a bad party has to say.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.
