Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Someone summed it up well onlinw
He won't get replaced by some progressive Dem. He'll get replaced by some MAGA loon, who will NEVER support Dem initiatives.
Yes, Manchin sucked for so many reasons, but you'll be missing him when his replacement gets seated, I guarantee you
Wasn't this a long time coming, actually? I'm sure we had talked about Manchin making noises about retirement some time before.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.
To address the half that's not joking, he's not joining the No Labels ticket, as they've said they want a moderate Republican to be their presidential nominee.
Independent run? Maybe, but I don't see him doing it. Who wants to be shunted into the same category as RFK Jr. and Cornel West?
Oh, that remind me; Jill Stein has replaced Cornel West as head of the Greene Party ticket.

Heard Manchin's leaving. Good luck to him, I guess. Based on his statements, I think he's going to try to run for the No Labels nomination at their April 2024 Dallas Convention, but I'm not sure he'll win. Otherwise, he can continue being some random rich tycoon safe and (probably) sound.
Also, yeah, guess Jill decided to help wrap up the Crazy Decade (which is wrapping up soon, one way or another)-she was there at the beginning, and I guess she'll be there at the end. Though I should note, there's a primary and convention, so she's not the nominee-for now, anyway.

Someone gave Biden a red UAW sweater before his speech to the large and "boisterous" crowd of autoworkers in Illinois today, which he put on to celebrate their deal with the auto manufacturers. He said their victory would help workers across the nation, noting Toyota had also announced a wage increase despite not having union workers. He also praised the UAW President Shawn Fain for his leadership during the strike.
Recall that Biden went and joined the autoworkers on their picket line during the strike.
There was also this amusing momemt
where someone in the audience apparently fell down and, after making sure the person was okay, Biden quips, "I want the press to know that wasn't me!"
...I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that nobody watched the most recent Republican debate last night.
Which is wholly understandable. I don't even remember if anybody here tried to report on the Republicans debates back in 2015-16.

For over 1250 senate confirmed appointments, with 153 (and counting) being judicial appointments, plus the entire 2020-2022 legislative agenda? Yeah I think it was worth it.
