The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They are not expected to take a mugshot of Trump given his recognizability.

Trump is probably now thinking, "Hm. I should shave my head and grow a moustache."

So I was watching my local news on ABC when they interrupted with Trump's arrest. They said Trump did not utter a single word and looked very stoic during the proceedings. Once Trump left, he ate at a Cuban restaurant and was basking in the attention of the crowd; he really wanted to get out of the courthouse and resume campaigning, doing anything to put the arrest behind him and hoping to delay anything else further.

Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.

Depending on what the trial schedule is like, there's a pretty good chance he'll effectively be stuck in Florida. Hell, the arraignment judge could legitimately tell him he can't leave Florida until the trial is done. I don't think that's super likely though because Trump basically can't disappear.

Really hoping this happens. I can imagine the DOJ even requesting it when considering the context of what Trump's being charged for.

You were correct. The judge let him go without condition.

McCarthy promises to cut spending to 2022 levels to get MAGA caucus to stop freezing votes in the House.

Aguilar, who sits on the Appropriations Committee, noted that neither Biden nor the Democratic-led Senate will ever accept spending levels below those included in the debt ceiling agreement. With that in mind, he said House Republican leaders are forcing their rank-and-file members to take a politically risky vote on cuts to popular programs for one reason only: to prevent hard-line conservatives from going after McCarthy's gavel.

Honestly between this, the NY proceedings and the likely incomming ones in Georgia he's going to have a serious crimp in his campainging calendar next year.

Trump Arrest- Don't forget the man has a Secret Service Detail so it'll be really hard for him to flee the country or not show up to hearings

[up][up]I mean if Trump just spends his entire campaign 2024 in Florida (already likely Red), NY (hahahaha, No) and Georgia it would still crimp his style.

[up][up][up] If he does that, he's going to go through lawyers even faster, because they're gonna be telling him to shut the fuck up about the court stuff while it's happening, because he runs the risk of digging himself deeper if he doesn't.

But Trump has never been capable of shutting the fuck up.

Do we have a date for the trial yet?

No, these things take time and will get delayed most of the time. Expect a lot of back and forth motions over legal things before they start trying to pencil in a date.

It's just, at his last arraignment, they announced the trial date, so I thought that was standard arraignment procedure.

The political organization No Labels might back Ron Desantis if he becomes the GOP nominee.

They’re a “Centrist” *COUGH*Far Right*COUGH* group funded by billionaires who think Democrats are “too extreme” who want Manchin to run for President as a third party if someone else becomes the GO Pnominee.

They have also funded Sinema.

Yeah the third party agenda is being done in part to earn seats for Republicans and ensure their continued tax breaks. Whether they succeed or not doesn’t matter as long as that happens.

So unsurprisingly Billionaires and companies like Coca-cola will hand the country over to Fascists rather than pay higher taxes.

Oh there were plenty of billionaires thrilled by the tax breaks Trump gave them and want more of that via Desantis. And of course they also fund No Labels and Sinema, including Harlan Crow and Murdoch.

There was a lot of talk about a pro-Trump protest at the courthouse, and worse, going around, but seems like that fizzled out at least for now.

Similar thing happened when he was arraigned in New Y Ork, and the big thing I heard about that was that many were suspicious to calls to protest, thinking it was a trap by the FBI "like January 6th". If that is your line of thinking, I could see why NYC in particular sounds risky, but Florida is a red state, and despite their bickering, Trump and RDS are supposedly on the same side.

But, if the right wing in the US is spooked from congregating in large numbers because they fear the FBI, I'm not complaining.

Most trials seem to happen within 6-7 months of the arrest, right to a speedy trial and all that. So since he was arrested yesterday we are looking at December 2023-January 2024 as a possible trial date. Its a Federal trial so we won't get it televised.
