Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That is how Big Pharma make their money, as much as we like to dunk on them for being profit-seeking vampires (which they are, of course). All of the costs for new drugs tend to be up-front, in R&D and in getting approval; actually synthesizing drugs is dirt cheap and anyone can do it if they have the data. So the cost of R&D has to be earned back in the patent period, because afterwards, the price the drug can sell for falls almost to cost.
In a single-payer system, the government would be able to work out contracts for the R&D and manufacturing firms to guarantee a reasonable profit without burdening the consumer, but that's commie talk.

Anyone hear that Trump is now defending Russia over the U.S.
? Traitor says what?
He might be lashing out because the walls are closing in on him.
Presumably hoping Putin can give him support in his campaign.
Now there's a spooky thought. Well it happened last time but with the current situation, it certainly would be treason at this point.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."The walls have been "closing in on him" for seven years. I'll believe it when I see it.

Russian interference is here to stay. It wasn't just a one-time thing for 2016; They've been peddling influence in every election since. Here's an article on Russian interference in the 2022 mid-term
.
If Trump wins the nomination, Moscow will most certainly be at it again, pushing disinformation and trying to get their guy into office. But they'll probably do that for any Republican. The Right's gone hard-friendly to Russia after learning that Putin will help them get elected.

Christ, this is some really terrifying shit NGL.
Look, I have misgivings about feeling railroaded into voting democrat, but dang it, guess I'm voting democrat next election because the alternative is a party selling out to Russia.

Yeah I've long accepted it since believe it or not, I tried giving Republican policies a look and see if I could find anything of value there.
And while there ARE things I agree with at least with certain economic plans, I find most of this to be pretty repulsive.
I feel like not being a bigoted asshole kind of alienates me from swinging to the right politically by default.
Oh but Trump and the Republican's relations to Putin have increased. That's the trick.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"The Democrats can be disappointing or disillusioning to some people, which I can understand.
The Republicans should be TERRIFYING to most people and you have to fight with the tools you have under the current political system. Your vote matters, otherwise there wouldn’t be feverish attempts to negate it by disenfranchisement or gerrymandering. Preventing the worst outcome is part of your civic duty as a citizen and you can only affect the system by participating in it.
If there’s one mantra to keep in mind when it comes to US politics today, it’s this: we ain’t out of the woods yet. We may never be totally out of the depths of this absurd and dangerous forest we’ve found ourselves in our lifetime. But if we can’t stop seeing trees around us, let’s at least make enough progress to get to a thinner canopy so we could see the beautiful blue sky once again.
…Also, Speedy, what happened to your avatar?
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. The greatest trick the conservatives ever pulled was to convince the world that human, civil, and political rights were a historical footnote and all related matters had been resolved long ago.

...
A federal district judge issued an injunction blocking enforcement of the law in November. On Thursday, three judges on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that ruling.
“Appellants’ motions to stay injunction pending appeal are DENIED,” the ruling said (emphasis in original).
The tersely worded order came with additional instructions, should the defendants decide to challenge the ruling.
“The Clerk is DIRECTED to treat any motion for reconsideration of this order as a non-emergency matter,” the order said.
The order was signed by U.S. Circuit Judges Charles Wilson, a Bill Clinton appointee, and Britt Grant and Barbara Lagoa, both Donald Trump appointees.
Indeed, no white kid is going to feel personally blamed for the crimes of their ancestors unless directly accused, and no one is directly accusing the kids. It's all strawmen. What kids may do is be inspired to take action, but republicans can't have that.

My musician pageAh, Republican bills and their Fun with Acronyms. Never gets old. I mean, it got old ages ago, but they don’t get tired of it apparently.

Obligatory,
YouTube restored Trump's channel.

From what I've read, they're actually inflating the "sticker price" of insulin (a 10ml vial retailing for $300 is jumping to $500-600) then selling it for $35 and claiming the difference as something akin to a tax deductible charitable contribution.
The whole $35 thing also only applies to some of their older injectable insulin (biggest market share is likely fast acting Humalog and 24 hour basals) and doesn't apply to the newest varieties which Lily for example is heavily pushing since they've finally lost the exclusive patents to the older ones. The new non discounted ones will likely fully replace the older ones for Type 1 diabetics on insulin pumps and push the impoverished ones into relying on old fashioned injections instead.
Novo Nordisks's 75% cut is pretty laughable, since theirs often run at $600+ it'll still put a prescription well in excess of $100/mo (roughly what someone on average US health insurance will pay in copays) while they get the tax boons too.
It's a small help for the consumer at least.
