Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Speaking of books. Adam Schiff has one talking about the insurrection and the people and events leading up to it. Among the people he talks about are Kevin Mc Carthy and Devin Nunes.
Nunes apparently used to be reasonable, then he realized how much influence he could have with the executive branch by sucking up to Trump and did a 180, culminating in his "midnight run" to the White House with alleged proof showing the Russia investigation was all fake. You know, the one where all the proof was quickly revealed to come from the White House to begin with.
Mccarthy, on the other hand, has always been very open about having no ethics. Schiff relates a conversation they had in 2010 about the upcoming elections and Schiff told Mc Carthy he thought the Democrats would do well. No sooner was Mc Carthy off the plane did he start telling reporters that Schiff admitted to him the D's were going to lose. When Schiff found out about this the next day by reading it in the paper he went and confronted Mc Carthy over his lie. Mc Carthy shrugged him off saying, "Ah, well, you know how the game is played."
Republicans start shit with Buttigieg when the latter takes parental leave.
Buttigieg responds that the Biden Administration is pro-family and wonders where the hell the "party of family values" get off challenging him for taking some time to bond with his newborn.
Side fight: Tucker Carlson suggests that Buttigieg is trying to learn to breastfeed. Buttigieg has to remind Carlson that bottles are a thing.

Clearly, Cotton is unaware that raising children - especially young ones and especially twins - constitutes working another job entirely. Frankly, I'm impressed that Buttigieg has managed to get as much done as he has.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrWe get it, Tucker, you're a Manchild who's totally insecure in his masculinity. God, conservative pundits are unoriginal
Do not obey in advance. At least one mainstream journalist on Twitter got quite a bit of flack for suggesting that Buttigieg was neglecting his job by taking parental leave.
EDIT: I was bit mistaken here. It actually was a Politico
article that began with "PETE BUTTIGIEG has been MIA", they were criticized for it, and a different Politico writer tweeted that people who are "reading negative connotations into the term (including the WH now) are doing so unfairly" and also was criticized for it.

Conservatives fundamentally cannot comprehend men actually taking care of their children. They were raised with the idea that men had to be working and providing and to do anything else is deviancy and bad.
And if your children don't grow up right because of that, that's their own damn fault for being weak.
It disgusts me that people think men shouldn't be allowed to take maternity leave to be a father to their newborns. It almost feels like this is partly why you see so many men walk out on their girlfriends/wives when they find out their significant other is pregnant; if you're told by society that taking care of kids is a woman's thing and you are too much of a man to do a woman's job, then you feel like you don't have to stick around for the child, especially if (general) you just want to fuck around with different women for your own sexual wants.
Sorry if this doesn't make too much sense, but I had to get it out.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.Speaking of conservatives hating women: Oklahoman woman has been sentenced to four years in prison for manslaughter because she was taking meth while pregnant.
The jury returned around 6:30 today with the verdict in Brittney Poolaw’s case.
The jury began deliberating around 3:45 p.m.
An autopsy report stated Poolaw’s child died at 17 weeks gestation. Advertisement
The report showed it tested positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and another drug in the liver and brain.
An OBGYN testified on the stand Tuesday as an expert for the state.
The doctor confirmed the fetus was at the gestational age of about 17 weeks and that methamphetamine use can have an effect on the pregnancy, though he said it may not be the direct cause of death for the fetus.
A nurse and medical examiner both testified to seeing congenital abnormalities on the fetus. Advertisement
Poolaw was sentenced to four years in prison.
I mean, taking illegal drugs while pregnant is not exactly up there on the list of genius moves made by humanity, although I'm not sure that it should justify a murder charge. Had the fetus survived, I can't see it having a quality life. We can go on and on about cycles of poverty, despair, and drug addiction, but this was never going to have a good outcome.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"To be fair, while I’m all for paternity leave, I do wonder if a member of the Cabinet’s responsibilities might ought to take precedence.
Though I don’t think that the Republicans’ critiques have stopped there, of course.

Oh God! Natural light! While it is a bad idea to take meth while pregnant, and the government probably should have intervened had the fetus been born, I don't understand why she should be convicted when the doctor that testified for the state said it might not be the cause of death. (Excluding the uncertainty inherent in science, of course).
And treating that as murder or manslaughter doesn't make sense either. Even if endangering a fetus (excluding medical abortions) has to be punished, treating that as the same as harming someone who is born is quite problematic.

Well, it's pretty unlikely that he didn't have anything juicy to reveal, but the question is whether he'd give anything real or just blow hot air to the officers.
Wake me up at your own risk.
