Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This is my favorite MAGA being forced to face reality video.
You can really see her starting to put the pieces together, and slowly come to the terrifying conclusion that maybe, just maybe, she's been conned.
In her head it goes " well if nothing happens on the 20th [then trump is sti—] then we'll look silly" this manifests in the long pauses while her eyes dart, kind of peeling away those incorrect assumptions.

Yeah, while losing the pipeline actually affects Canada's Economy as a whole (Alberta and Saskatchewan being Oil producers basically control what our dollar is worth now. Thanks, Stephen Harper...), a lot of WHY things went to hell was Trump's "America First" idea and pulling out of NAFTA.
Biden's well known for liking us up here as well, so he'll be very much empathetic to our plight, and do a lot to strengthen our old bonds. While our nations can be very much Vitriolic Best Buds, there's a reason why we share the longest undefended border in the world. And why, at the end of the day, our troops are friendly rivals and Bash Brothers.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido. The thing about Canada — no offense, eh? — is that it's kind of got this petroleum problem, with a powerful lobby that hampers efforts to advance clean energy. Y'all need to cut that shit out.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
You can thank our own Right-wing for that.
Well, that, and American Right-Wing Lobbyists have been targetting Canada every election for over 4 decades.
I'm still not sure Jack Layton died of natural causes either. Guy was a Charismatic and well-liked leader of the NDP, essentially our furthest-left party, and was probably their most likely candidate ever of becoming PM. And then he just happened to die.
And, as I mentioned earlier, Stephen Harper put in legislation that essentially tied our dollar to the amount we could sell our oil for, which made selling it to the US pretty much critical. Not really surprising, given S.H.'s whole two claims to fame were looking Mildly Confused all the time, and sucking up to whoever the American President was his entire time in office.
In any case, the important thing at this point Biden getting the US's shit together also means it'll help us being able to get our shit together up here too.
Also why one of the things I hate an American Alt-righter saying is "You're Canadian, why do you care what happens here?"
To Paraphrase Star-Lord: "Because I'm one of the idiots who lives here!"

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Especially since a lot of those companies are also American-owned.
To be blunt, stuff is screwy all over the world, really.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Hence the tinfoil hat.
I know he announced it.
It's just never sat right with me. The man deserved better.
Also, btw, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, then went on that leave of absence before he died to fight an entirely different kind, which we were never told what was. That's actually a matter of public record. Pancreatic Cancer is what killed Alex Trebek. I get that they looked alike.
Fair enough. I'm noting something doesn't add up.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Living a year and a half after a diagnosis of pancreatic (or bone, or late-stage colon) cancer is actually a decent span of time. Pancreatic cancer is notoriously deadly and fast-acting for how common it is. Look at the case of Alex Trebek, who surely had access to fantastic health care.
Also, it's not that unusual to be unlucky enough to come down two types of cancer.

Well, my point is more Jack Layton (as far as we know) didn't HAVE Pancreatic Cancer. Prostate Cancer tends to be more of a "slow burner" as cancers go.
In any event, Cancer can go fuck itself. It's killed a lot of good people who could have, or did, change the world for the better.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido. The key word is tends to. Prostate cancer that has progressed to the so-called castration-resistant phase as they call it, which can happen if you don't catch it in time, or can happen even to a subset of those who are diagnosed in time, has a very poor prognosis.

Anywho, back to Political and Trump news, https://globalnews.ca/news/7449139/trump-impending-lawsuits/
Global News on some of the incoming lawsuits heading for Trumpy.
Metaphorically, most of them.
Well, unless J. Lo spontaneously developed some kinda of Brown Note Make Me Wanna Shout powers when I wasn't looking.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Q people realizing or even having a breakdown that they're conned is very, very good. It means that they can no longer maintain the cognitive dissonance. it's something to cheer on, not something to feel bad over. The alternative is that they keep believing and will again act on their belief with violence and malice.
Also, the keystone pipeline is a terrible way to help indigenous people in Canada. With oil on it's way out (slowly, but it is heading that way), it's just gonna dump a whole lot of problems on them in a couple of decades. They'd be better off being helped in other jobs. In addition, Canada does need to transition away from oil too, and the US supporting them with oil isn't going to help that.

why I'm hopeful the Biden Administration can help with that.

One thing that I thought was interesting, is that a lot of people in the comments were actually comparing the mindset to realizing you are in an abusive relationship.
Same way totally awesome people find themselves in abusive relationships. It happens slowly and you dont realize it until you are so far in and invested so much you hesitate to lose it all. Cost fund fallacy to the extreme.

Dan Olson of Folding Ideas had more mixed feelings on the issue.
I am... conflicted over the pain in MAGA/Q circles.
On one hand a lot of well-meaning people were misled and exploited by grifters.
But also a whole spectrum of people willingly bought into the grift because they wanted what it promised: murdering liberals.
Like, on a certain level I feel bad for all the tearful MAG As who are adrift today because they feel lied to, betrayed, and used.
Because they were used.
But also, like, what they thought they were going to get out of the deal is still bad. Details matter.
Well, sad fact is, from what I can discern from her story, Ashli Babbitt WAS one of the duped ones.
And she died for it.
