The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Michigan state election board has certified their vote, per CNN, with a vote of 3 for and 1 abstain.

There's an ongoing recount in Iowa's 2nd congressional district, where it appears Democrat Rita Hart is currently behind by 6 votes. [1] When all's said and done, the margin will likely be in the double digits.

There are so many races this year, important ones!, being decided by bone-narrow margins. It's painful to look at.

Michigan certifying Biden shouldn't be a breathe easier moment but it is.

[up][up][up] Alright, who abstained?

looks at article

It's good that one of the Republicans crossed party lines (though I do suspect that he did so under public pressure since his vote was unknown before). The other abstaining is quite cowardly, he couldn't bother to take the negative PR of voting "no" so he just didn't vote at all.

[up][up] Agreed, 2020 elections are not good for my blood pressure.

So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my Tumblr

As someone who has been at an election count (for a local council seat) that we lost by three votes, it’s even worse when you’re in the room for the counting. Especially as in the my country you can do some level of ballot harvesting, so it’s entirely possible we had 4 votes for our candidate sitting back at our campaign HQ.

With the senate thing, are the people expected to step aside chairs of equally powerful sub-committees? Or might they step aside from that chair to take up this one?

So Trump may have acknowledged that the transition process needs to begin via Tweet (because of fucking course). Its not a concession, but its something.

I want to thank Emily Murphy at GSA for her steadfast dedication and loyalty to our Country. She has been harassed, threatened, and abused – and I do not want to see this happen to her, her family, or employees of GSA. Our case STRONGLY continues, we will keep up the good ...fight, and I believe we will prevail! Nevertheless, in the best interest of our Country, I am recommending that Emily and her team do what needs to be done with regard to initial protocols, and have told my team to do the same.

This is important for health and national security reasons. But to hell with Emily Murphy for this delaying action, she needs to be blacklisted if not investigated for her actions over the past few weeks.

And here it is, the GSA has notified Biden and co that the transition will begin.

I heard that on a drive. Basically the writing was on the wall after Michigan certified the results earlier this afternoon. Well, it was on the wall a couple weeks ago, but you know what I mean.

Klobuchar is ranking Democrat on Rules, Leahy on Appropriations, and Coons on Ethics. It's possible one of them decides that they prefer Judiciary to their current position. It traditionally tends to go by seniority, but Democrats might shake it up this year (less senior members are running for Chair in the House).

EDIT: Okay, I was wrong. It looks like Dick Durbin will run for Judiciary Chair.

He'll never actually concede outright, but with this coming a day after firing Sidney Powell, it sure sounds like Trump is throwing in the towel.

@Pushover, I'm not sure myself. It does have the hallmarks of a Trump Tweet (country capitalized for no reason, strongly in ALL-CAPS, etc).

Yeah, but it also includes this:

I am recommending that Emily and her team do what needs to be done with regard to initial protocols, and have told my team to do the same.

Which is WAY too considerate of other people and formally written.

Also, Murphy didn't refer to Biden as President-Elect, or even as "Mr. Vice President", she just addressed him as "Mr. Biden". And she never outright called him the apparent winner of the election.

Petty until the end.

[up]Does it really matter? Murdoch will probably be gone in a few years, and without him Fox News would lose significance.

His son Lachlan isn't any better than he is, but he has another one that's apparently a lot more moderate. They've reportedly been fighting for control of the business ever since they were kids.
