Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I had not realized that the electors in the electoral college were still actual people. I knew that they were in the 1700s and early 1800s, but I thought that by now it was just a way of counting how many EC votes a state got.
They’re still actual people, that’s why neither Trump or Hillary got their full votes in 2016, because some of their electors refused to actually vote for them (electors are picked by the state party and are usually senior figures in the state who don’t hold elected office).
So in Georgia, Abrams is an Democrat elector this year, in New York, Hillary is one.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranA comparison of today's tweets from both Trump and Biden. See if you can guess which is which:
And the other guy:
At the rate MegaloDON is tweeting negatively about fellow Republicans from Georgia, Dems are getting more and more likely to win the Senate.

"Paldea has a lot of different Pokemon from those in Kitakami." - CarmineIf we do take both Georgia seats, I'd be very amused if one of them thanks Trump directly for helping turn Georgia blue.

Trump may be trying to get Michigan's electors overturned and replaced. It's still unlikely, but he seems to be trying.

Note that a number of his lawyers, including Giuliani, won't be attending this meeting with the Michigan Republicans due to having to isolate after being exposed to Guiliani's Covid infected son.

I wonder if meetings at the WH itself are recorded in some fashion? These guys appear to be on sketchy legal ground.

I think it's more that the lawyers want deniability about any illegal statements.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. If it's an official meeting at the WH, with staff on attendance and everything, I don't see how they maintain any sort of deniability.
x4 Yeah I think it was pointed out yesterday that the Michigan legislature doesn't even have the power to appoint electors without passing a law that lets them specifically do it (instead of awarding them automatically), and Whitmer's not going to sign a law like that into power.
Avatar SourceIt's probably political theater, with a dash of placating the President's ego thrown in, but it's still damaging.
I'm a bit late on it, but the discussion about the onus being on the oppressed reminded me of a political cartoon in which one man is beating another over the head with a cross, only to play the Wounded Gazelle Gambit when the person being beaten breaks the cross over their knee - pleading for civility after behaving in a wildly uncivil manner.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"This whole thing of Trump's has been theater from the start, albeit very dangerous theater that undermines democratic norms.
Merrick Garland Among Biden Candidates For Attorney General, Sources Say
The federal judge and erstwhile Supreme Court nominee — whose case was never taken up by Senate Republicans — could be asked by the new administration to take the reins of the Justice Department
Is that good or bad?
It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference. It's a big fuck you to the republician party.
Mnuchin claims the US is working on "mass distribution of the virus".
I really, really hope that this was a Freudian slip for vaccine. Because the alternative is just fucked up beyond measure.
"Yup. That tasted purple."I hope that if Garland does become the new A.G. he goes full "Bill Barr" and investigates some of the Republicans in Congress for potential corruption. They do not need to be impeached, but if they resign out of uncovered scandals that could help Dems strengthen control over Congress.
Probably just a slip of the tongue. No sane person would say "mass distribution of the virus" earnestly.

"Paldea has a lot of different Pokemon from those in Kitakami." - CarmineIt can be technically true since vaccines contain a weakened version of the virus, if I remember correctly.
With a '0', not an 'O'Wait, was Garland the one who was stonewalled by Republicans during the Obama years?
It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference. He was Obama's Supreme Court pick, yes.

Each party already has its slate of electors lined up who will vote for their party's ticket should that ticket win the popular vote in that state. Eight statesnote actually name said electors on the ballot.
