The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] It must be different in New York, because in Pennsylvania I got an email notification that my ballot was accepted.

Yeah it varies from state to state. I do wonder about the signature update thing, in the long term it may be worth contacting the election officials and asking about if it’s possible to update your signature.

The signature thing is bullshit and another tactic to invalidate votes.

How else can they confirm it's you who sent the ballot?

I'm in the same boat. No way can I replicate my old signature, so I'm going to vote early, in-person.

Ok, why is Trump dancing horribly to YMCA at every rally he goes to?

Trump is a lunatic.

That explains a lot of things.

Because he's told he needs to be a "man of the people" and the only people he knows of are the Village People.

Concerns about my signature not matching is a big part of the reason why I decided to vote in person early.

My current signature is a actually a reasonably good match for the one on my driver's license, but I have no idea if that's the one they use for my voting registration.

Honestly though, if they absolutely have to use signatures they should keep every signature from every ballot you cast on file, in person or absentee. That way when they compare signatures they aren't just looking at what could be a decade-plus old signature but they can also see how it's evolved over the years and what it looked like potentially under a year ago.

Barring any sign of fraud, I think they should just accept the ballots from the addresses they came from.

Ok, why is Trump dancing horribly to YMCA at every rally he goes to?

Probably because the Village People haven't sent him a Cease and Desist order yet. Almost everyone else has.

About the only celebrities to endorse Trump are Mike Love and Kirstie Alley.

The latter led to a deluge that she's the Evil Saavik they planned for The Undiscovered Country.

She didn't even need to announce she was voting for him. Meaning she's proud of it.

Blech.

It's really bizarre to me that you're not legally allowed to play certain music at outdoor events. I wonder what's the difference between a Trump rally and a Family Barbecue.

My county only has one polling location, so I might try during the off hours come Monday or Tuesday. Went by Friday and the line was down the road and I would have missed work.

[up][up] It's a matter of whether you're profiting off of the use of the music.

Using copyrighted music at a political campaign event isn't the same thing as playing some music at a family get together.

Yes, a political campaign rally is different from a family BBQ since most family BBQ's aren't also glorified commercials.

Wouldn’t be surprised. I know Dean Cain is another Trump supporter, which is honestly kind of a bummer. I hate that a guy who played Superman supports him.
