Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Or one of the states he completely abandoned to the virus?
Avatar SourceI mean it’s the New York Post reporting that, so I wouldn’t be sure if it’s even an accurate representation of what Trump said.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranUnless they're deliberately misquoting and keeping the same rambling style:
“I will bring down taxes and I’ll make sure that New York City is a safe place. I mean, this is one of our cherished — this is a cherished diamond of this country. And we can’t let this happen to New York.”
The president said his campaign would spend money on efforts to win New York and that he plans to make campaign stops. He bashed New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s performance.
“We’re going to invest in there, we’ll visit. I’m going to put it down as you know on the list,” Trump said. “For instance, we think we’re going to win New Mexico, we think we’re going to win Minnesota. We think we’re, we have a shot perhaps at Virginia because they have a very, very strange governor.”
I mean it is a Murdoch owned tabloid, so that’s rather possible.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranWe should probably wait for more reputable sources. I don't like giving the NY Post clicks anyway.
Disgusted, but not surprisedAgreed.
Though it would be amazing if Trump did try to waste resources on New York

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnNot so much if it turns out that the resources he wastes aren't actually his to begin with.
(Remember, this is a man that has not paid a single one of the tabs for his campaign rallies, none, and is trying to force the states he appears in to pay for them instead.)
He will most likely just dine-and-dash again wherever he goes on his cult-rallies...
It wouldn't be his personal fortune, but rather the GOP's coffers.
Disgusted, but not surprisedIn that case, it would be karma striking the GOP for endorsing him in the first place.
He bankrupts everything he touches after all, a political party would be no different.
Can we officially accept that the Republicans intend to steal this election and should be treated as enemies of democracy at this point?
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Yes. Absolutely.
Xbox/PlayStation: IndiGhost77 | on semi-hiatusI have a better question: How is any of this legal?
Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.Arguably their assaults on mail-in ballots via the postal service are not because delaying the mail is illegal. But who can prosecute them?
The rest is spamming as many lawsuits as they can find any basis for in the hope some of them stick.
Avatar SourceIt probably isn't, but who's going to stop them? The incredibly corrupt Republican president and his administration? The Justice Department that's acting as Trump's personal legal firm? The Congress that is half controlled by Republicans who fall into lockstep behind Trump? The conservative-leaning Supreme Court?
The people of America must stop them.
(The GOP was "elected" by them and are supposed to work for them! Not the other way around.)
The people of America must rise up and end this evil with their own rights and hands...

Hypothetically could a democrat governor declare a state of emergency and send the national guard to help with the postal sorting and delivery for the week before Election Day?
Since apparently we’re in exactly that crazy a world.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranAnd in some good election news: the Supreme Court rejected a request by the Republicans to force Rhode Island to reinstate a rule requiring mail-in ballots be signed by two witnesses or a public notary which was culled because of COVID-19; Thomas, Alito, and Gorush dissented.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."It looks like the case wasn’t actually ruled on, they refused to hear the case because the Republican National Committee don’t have grounds to challenge the suspension of a rule that hadn’t come into effect yet. It seems to say that if any state officials had objected to what RI is doing things would be different.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranIt's probably unconstitutional. Though at this point, perhaps Democrats need to do some unconstitutional things if it means saving the republic.
Optimism is a duty.Except for when they gutted the Voting Rights Act, I think the Roberts court's attitude towards voting rights, gerrymandering, etc., has been that they don't care.
They won't stop Republicans for voter suppression or gerrymandering, they won't do anything to make voting easier, even during the pandemic, but they won't invalidate the laws Democrats pass. It's basically a "not my problem" attitude.
Not 'they don't care.' The Roberts court has been actively hostile to voting rights.
Basically Republicans know they don't have a chance in hell if they let Democrats vote, and they've been getting increasingly desperate over the last several years (possibly longer) to keep that from happening.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."
He thinks he can win over the state he already rejected by changing his state of residence to Florida?
Disgusted, but not surprised
