My preferred definition is "Politics is Who gets What, When, and How".

When you boil it down to its most fundamental characteristic politics is about how resources are distributed.

Typically, I describe politics as "macro-ethics". It's a question of how large groups of people should behave.

Though, honestly, a better definition is probably just "what laws should be written".

Politics is also the thing of who is charge and who get to used the power of the state and the public.

is the issue with the idea politics is in everything: is true but is also misleading.

Politics is what binds societies together, and what allows societies to delegate work that would take up too much of an individual's time, or that no single individual or smaller group could accomplish. A politician's real, main job is keeping their society together and running smoothly.

This, mainly, is why divisive and self-serving politics is so perverse and poisonous. It undermines the very function politics is supposed to serve. It is also why politics that does not serve the entire population is inherently a failure of politics, which should ideally serve all its constituents.

For all our gripes about politicians in general, we absolutely need them to maintain our civilization and way of life.

There's also an unwillingness to confront the fact that the Republicans have built their base on a subtle pervasive class and social warfare that has its roots in large segments of society. People that liberals tend to assume are misunderstood rather than actively malicious.

The face of white supremacy is not a Hell's Angel biker or hillbilly moonshiner but a soccer mom and her car dealer husband worrying a black man will move into the neighborhood or, worse, buy a nicer house. People who will insist they aren't racist but believe that this upends a proper order they believe exists and have various justifications for.

[up]I mean because the implication with that is pretty much "a huge sociaty of america is perverse and wrong and should all be shun until they learn how to behave when I said so"; which is.....creepy.

It's a hard pill but a large part of America really is okay with being awful to minorities as long as it can be gussied up. The sooner one accepts this, the better the conditions will be to fight it.

Yeah and after this Presidency, we need to acknowledge the latter is the case. People who continued to support Trump throughout this weren't ignorant, they were hateful.

I really wish he'd just acknowledge Kamala Harris as his running mate.

There's a nasty group against her but I believe she's the best woman for the job.

Yeah. Iím kind of concerned about the delay in light of the nasty campaign against Harris from Ed Rendell and Chris Dodd. Hope Biden isnít listening to them.

And just this morning I was listening to two Obama staffer talk about how Biden's phrasing made it unclear if he meant he'd choose his running mate in the first week, or if he'd reveal his running mate in the first week. Guess we got that clarification.

Note the the week before the convention is also the week right after the original reveal week. For all we know this just meant the VP will be revealed on the 10th instead of the 9th.

Nevertheless, you must persist.

Re: Vulnerable Senators distancing themselves from Trump: Ooh boy. If that happens, Trump's done. There's no way he can win if even the Republicans aren't standing by him anymore. And it is not, in fact, a great strategy for the Senators either, because Trump is gonna lash out and do his best to take them down with him in reaction to perceived 'betrayal'.

But what's interesting to me is that McConnel's apparently advising them to do it despite surely being aware of all that. Perhaps he's decided that stick with Trump will damage them more than Trump lashing out at them could? It's still a sign that he's becoming resolved to the idea of Trump losing.

I don't especially want it to be Harris, and I think she's more effective as a senator.

No...no, I don't think I'd want that.

If I wanted her to be POTUS I'd have voted for her in the primaries. And I didn't do that.

I mean sure, if picking an also-ran who got minimal support in the previous primaries because of meeting tickboxes for VP is your idea of how to pick the next presidential candidate.
