Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Again, Soleimani had 80% popularity in Iran, and millions attended his funeral. Plus, he was their head of foreign intelligence, and was in Iraq on a diplomatic mission. Killing him was a major act of war, and they had to strike back, or their own people would have torn them apart.
This string of attacks is flashy (SRBMs are a pretty big deal, let alone dozens at once), and likely caused a lot of property damage, but that seems to be most of what it did. The DOD is reporting no American casualties, likely because the Iranians made a big show of moving their missiles into position a while before the strike in order to give them time to evacuate. Basically, this is Iran saying 'it can end here, or it can escalate - your choice'.
What's precedent ever done for us?Pentagon said no American casualties, and Iraqi government is apparently now saying no Iraqi casualties.
Guess they just aimed for the runways.
The attack started at the time of day Soleimani was killed, and he was buried shortly after it ended.
Pretty obvious symbolism there.
I don’t wish to add in panic or anything, but just to clarify, what ARE the steps to launching nuclear weapons again?
Oh God! Natural light!For context,
is a link to a tweet that reads as follows:
"These messages are fraudulent. Do not respond or call the numbers listed." - Office of Secretary of Defense.

"Okay, we got our revenge by doing the geopolitical equivalent of throwing eggs at your house and leaving flaming bags of shit on your doorstep. We're willing to stop here if you are."
No, he's not going to take them up on that unless he can find a way to spin it so that he looks like the "winner".
Oh FFS. This is one of the most annoying things about Trump — his utterly inane tweets.

Disgusted, but not surprisedOut of curiosity, isnt everyone being a little bit alarmist about this?
OK Iran launched a few missiles at US bases. But given the fact that there has been no US casualties so far, no attack on civilian targets, and that the Iranians are apparently calling this even, I would think that this is just about as little as they can do for a face saving retaliation after the US blew up one of their most senior operations commanders.
If anything rather than this indicating a desire to escalate I would think the opposite, that the Iranians want to deescalate matters.

All the casualties in the attack on the American base have been confirmed as Iraqis, no Americans.
