Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This. We're in a culture war for the soul of our country. Part of the reason we were able to not notice this before was because people who held these kinds of beliefs were embarrassed to admit them out loud. They knew that what they wanted to say was a bad thing to say, something that would diminish them in the eyes of the people they knew. So they quietly sat on their hate and were thus able to participate in civil society.
Today, these people are emboldened. They feel like their hate is validated and they can share and express it openly. They are actively fighting for the ability to hate freely and without social consequence.
This culture war ends one of two ways. Either
- Hate goes back under the rock whence it came. It once again becomes socially unacceptable to declare white supremacist ideals in public, and people who hold those beliefs must return to quietly seething at people while trying to avoid letting others know that they're doing it.
- Being a member of the KKK or a Neo-Nazi becomes a socially acceptable political position for people considered reasonable to hold.
Until one of these two things happen, there can never be a return to "normalcy". X-istsare fighting for the right to be openly racist, while everyone else is fighting for the right to not have open x-ismfloating about our society. This doesn't end until one side gives up and surrenders.
There is no compromise between x-ism and not x-ism. If you want to live in a country where this culture war is not happening, pick a side and fight for it. No one gets to go home until someone wins.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Something I'm not sure has been brought up yet, but it's since come out that Trumps military advisors tried invoking the Golden Mean Fallacy - but Trump unexpectedly went with the most extreme measure
, rather than the happy medium they really wanted.
So can this be appropriately filed under Gone Horribly Right?
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
Giving the president a selection of options ranging from "slap on the wrist" to Disproportionate Retribution is pretty normal, if I recall correctly.
But as many pundits have pointed out in the last few days: Why'd you give '''Trump''', of all, people an extreme option, if you didn't want him to take it?
The guy knows nothing but extremes - of bloody course he'd pick the most extreme option on the table.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyAnd It's Been Done with the The Simpsons Movie. Mind, the EPA Director tricked the president into picking the worst option the second time, rather than the president being an asshole.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."CNN has settled the Defamation Lawsuit from Covington Catholic student Nicholas Sandmann
, the Student in the MAGA hat who was harassed by Native American Protesters and then harassed them back. The details of the settlement have not been disclosed, and might not be for a long time. NBC and Washington Post are still being sued, and have not settled.
CNN shouldn't have settled; they were reporting on the facts they had at the time and they have freedom of speech and press rights that allow them to interpret their opinion on the matter at hand. Settling just makes them look guilty of actual Defamation.
This can of worms won't be closed for a long time I guess.
And look, I hate Trump supporters as much as the next guy, but in this case I actually have to admit, the media did spin the narrative. The agression (as in, racist slurs) came from the Black Hebrew Israelites, all the kids did was jerk around a little, and Nick Sandman in particular (who didn't even dance) only stood there and smiled when Nathan Phillips walked up to him and started drumming in his face (nobody was blocking his path, he walked right up to them and there was plenty of space to go around).
The left didn't do itself any favors with this story.

Sir Humphrey Appleby : Well, it's obvious, Bernard. The Foreign Office will happily present him with three options, two of which are, on close inspection, exactly the same.
Sir Richard Wharton : Plus a third which is totally unacceptable.
Sir Humphrey Appleby : Like bombing Warsaw or invading France.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo good old Uncle Joe seems to think Mc Connell will become 'mildly cooperative' with Democrats once Trump is out of office:

1. This presupposes that Trump will not be re-elected.
2. WHAT?!
If this guy gets the nomination, we are doomed

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.Yeah well I don't agree with this. Like I said, it was the BHI who actually shouted explicit racist abuse. And even so, if you wanna critize the other students, thats one thing, but Sandman, the one who this whole fuss was about did literally nothing else than smiling at Philips (who, once again, approached him, not the other way around).

Cheers and good night.

The sources we’re seeing are saying “tens” of missiles launched from locations across the interior of Iraq. Not exactly an overwhelming Iranian counterattack, more likely the work of militias or proxies.
Why don’t we let the situation develop from a few nameless sources before we all freak out.

Uh, no. Iran has taken credit for this attack:
