The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, nobody in the US can "postpone" an election and given that a war against Iran would not likely take place on US soil, there wouldn't be even a plausible rationale for doing so.

Does anyone think Trump knows this, or cares? Trump will float this in one of his inane tweets and the GOP will back him up coz they're his party.

Rules, laws, constitutions are just words on paper unless people are willing to enforce them.

^I think "Trump suggests canceling Election Day in a tweet, ending American democracy forever" falls fairly close to doomsaying, honestly. He's the President, sure, but he doesn't get to just say "make it so". He wishes that's how it worked, but it's not.

It's been fun.

[up] "We're ending elections forever" would obviously be a bad way to go about it.

But if he went "we're postponing elections for a week coz we're investigating interference by whomever." How many ppl would be ok with it? If that week stretches to a month? A year?

If I went on about concentration camps for children 3 years ago, that would be doomsaying back then too.

There is no legal or constitutional provision to delay or cancel a US election. Any attempt would run straight into legal and public backlash.

You had an election in 1944, so I can't see any precedent for a war with Iran delaying one.

Right. So absolutely zero historical precedent that he (or Republicans) can use to weasel out of it.

He could claim its in the interests of security to postpone the election, but he won't,its more likely he'll try to rearrange the date so its falls on a really awkward month like December (like my country did) to increase his chances of winning

A lot of government runs on the honor system, so, uh... I’m not too confident. Remember, SCOTUS told Andrew Jackson he couldn’t do the Trail of Tears, and he did it anyway and said “[Chief Justice] John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.”

Britain doesn’t have fixed election dates - the government can legitimately call an election any time it likes. The US does have fixed election dates. The two aren’t comparable.

I could see trump tweeting that he’s going to delay the election, only for it to be shut down. Then he’ll cry and piss himself if he doesn’t win, and probably take legal action to try and pull the same stunt as bush did in 2000. That’s the only real worry I have.

They’re not an honour thing, the federal government doesn’t run the elections, the states do.

Dem controlled states aren’t going to halt elections even if they could (they can’t), so even if Republican ones did you’d just see the Dems win a bunch of votes while a load of Republican states don’t vote.

The electors elected would then meet and elect the victorious democrat, even if Trump somehow got Roberts to refuse to swear in a new president (something Roberts would do) the new president would become president anyway and Trump would be removed from the White House by the secret service (and Roberts would be arrested).

Trump can’t suspend elections legally, to do it illegally he’d need the support of the secret service, the Chief Justice and multiple state governments, he doesn’t have even 1 of 3, never mind all 3.

That’s before we get to the fact that if Trump did manage to illegal suspend elections you’d see national guard regiments and the DC police marching on the White House to remove him by force.

For the love of god stop coming up with crazy conspiracy theories to panic about.

Sure then Trump deploys the actual military and you have a shoot out,or by that time Military have turned on him too

either way it's a scenario that's very difficult to predict outcome of

What he can do and what he does do... he’s got a lot of other improper “acting” officials already.
