The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If I recall right, the uproar was that the model's (not AOC's) breasts were visible in the reflection of the faucet on the tub. But a foot fetish forum noticed that the feet weren't hers, and I'm not making that up.

Is there any irony that fetishists saved the day against an attempt to smear a Democrat for relatively tame sexiness?

Me, I am more concerned that people/media are still wonking over such insignificant things. Politics is not a beauty pageant, never mind sexism concerns.

Also, I am a little afraid of how much authority presidents have during "emergencies".

So RBG will miss her second week of court next week, but she is on track to return (around the first of February, as I read in another article.) There are no signs of disease left, and no further treatment is planned:

Even a bit of good news is still good in these troubling times

I've re-read the rules carefully and hopefully this one doesn't break anything

Exasperated Democrats try to rein in Ocasio-Cortez
The effort is part carrot, part stick. But it's far from clear the anti-establishment political novice can be made to play ball.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/11/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-democrats-establisment-1093728

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is already making enemies in the House Democratic Caucus — and some of its members are mounting an operation to bring the anti-establishment, democratic socialist with 2.2 million Twitter followers into the fold.

The effort, described by nearly 20 lawmakers and aides, is part carrot, part stick: Some lawmakers with ties to Ocasio-Cortez are hoping to coax her into using her star power to unite Democrats and turn her fire on Republicans. Others simultaneously warn Ocasio-Cortez is destined for a lonely, ineffectual career in Congress if she continues to treat her own party as the enemy.

“I’m sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there’s almost an outstanding rule: Don’t attack your own people,” said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.). “We just don’t need sniping in our Democratic Caucus.”

Incumbent Democrats are most annoyed by Ocasio-Cortez’s threat to back primary opponents against members of their ranks she deems too moderate. But their frustration goes beyond that: Democratic leaders are upset that she railed against their new set of House rules on Twitter the first week of the new Congress. Rank and file are peeved that there’s a grassroots movement to try to win her a top committee post they feel she doesn’t deserve.

Even some progressives who admire AOC, as she’s nicknamed, told POLITICO that they worry she’s not using her notoriety effectively.

“She needs to decide: Does she want to be an effective legislator or just continue being a Twitter star?” said one House Democrat who’s in lockstep with Ocasio Cortez’s ideology. “There’s a difference between being an activist and a lawmaker in Congress.”

Exclusive: Trump team should be allowed to ‘correct’ final Mueller report, says Giuliani

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/424871-exclusive-trump-team-should-be-allowed-to-correct-final-mueller

Rudy Giuliani says President Trump’s legal team should be allowed to “correct” special counsel Robert Mueller’s final report before Congress or the American people get the chance to read it.

The claim, made in a telephone interview with The Hill on Thursday evening, goes further than the president’s legal advisers have ever gone before in arguing they have a right to review the conclusions of Mueller’s probe, which is now in its 20th month.

“As a matter of fairness, they should show it to you — so we can correct it if they’re wrong,” said the former New York City mayor, who is a member of Trump's personal legal team. “They’re not God, after all. They could be wrong.”

The special counsel's office declined to comment.

People are awful.

Illegal roads, cut down Joshua trees, and damaged federal property, along with the need to clean up garbage, prompted Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent David Smith to announce Tuesday that the park would close indefinitely on Thursday to address those impacts incurred during the ongoing partial government shutdown.

“The park will be closed until I can ensure that resources inside the park are protected," Smith said during a short phone call. "We’re hoping that the shutdown will be over soon."

While the closure will take effect 8 a.m. Thursday, the superintendent could not say how long it would last. Acting Interior Secretary David Bernhardt has directed the National Park Service to use fee revenues brought in under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act to pay for cleanup and additional law enforcement personnel. Smith said that while his park normally takes in about $9 million a year, most of that has been committed to projects. Staff was working to see how much in unobligated funds remained.

One place that saw traffic was around Joshua Tree's Live Oak area, which is not far from the north entrance to the park.

“We had some pretty extensive four-wheel driving around the entire area to access probably our most significant tree in the park," Smith said. "We have this hybrid live oak tree that is deciduous. It is one of our kind of iconic trees inside the park. People were driving to it and camping under it. Through the virgin desert to get to this location. That would probably be a quarter-mile or so around the rock formation that is there.”

The superintendent said there also were instances of graffiti in the park this past week. Park officials were identifying additional staff and resources needed to address immediate maintenance and sanitation issues.

Monitoring a park the size of Joshua Tree, which covers 1,235 square miles and has about 20 different entrances due to dirt roads that ring the park, is extremely difficult with just eight law enforcement rangers. Were it not for the shutdown, there would have been more than 100 other "sets of eyes" to help keep an eye on visitor behavior, the superintendent said.

"We have 120 employees in the park, plus 30 associates that work for Great Basin Institute, the majority of whom are in the park every day," he said. "Those are the folks that are in the campgrounds and in the day-use areas and doing science. So you’ve got 100 sets of eyes in the park every day with folks contacting visitors."

Law enforcement rangers were to continue to patrol the park and enforce the closure until park staff completes the necessary cleanup and park protection measures.

Ugh. I do follow Nate Silver's Twitter feed and among the (ahem) "interesting" things linked there is this Tweet about Politico running a "Hillary Clinton will somehow cause Democrats to blow the midterms" story and another one about their coverage of Elizabeth Warren. Pace my previously stated opinion of a Warren candidacy, I am thinking that Politico's coverage in both cases is exactly what people mean when they say that sexism still runs rampant in politics.

Much less flashy, though. So Trump is holding off on declaring a national emergency "for now":

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-holds-border-security-roundtable-live-updates/

So why can't the government re-open? What is the point of dragging this out? Mc Connell is rejecting every single bill, even the ones drafted by Republicans

What is the point of any of this?

Do you think, if this lasts long enough, people might actually start revolting?

If enough people are jobless and/or hungry, I would hope that would spur them to some kind of action

What is Trump going to do? Arrest them? Tear-gas them? Have the military turn their weapons on them?

When is enough going to be enough?

Trump's been probably told that it either won't work or that Republicans are opposed to it. Remember, if Trump can use an emergency declaration to embezzle appropriated money for pet projects so can any future Democratic president. And we already know that the only times - such as scrapping the legislative filibuster - where Evil Turtle holds his party back is when a measure would allow future Democratic administrations and Senate majorities to waltz over the minority.

Behind the scenes it's because Mc Connell ultimately can only game Trump, not control him. Mc Connell is not blocking votes because he wants to extend the Shutdown, he wants to avoid having the clash between him and Trump openly.

And if Congress passes a bill in both Houses only for Trump to Veto it, it'll be in the open.

The Turtle gives a flying fuck about the Wall, he wants his Agenda done. Trump believes not getting that Wall is a sign of weakness and is unwilling to budge on it. Thats what started this mess.

So unless the Dems blink, the true Clash of Wills here is between Mc Connell and Trump behind closed doors.
