The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Gerrymandering is goddamn evil, no matter which party does it. Glad to see the NJ Democratic Governor is throwing a fit about it.

Or, in line with the metaphor: one barrel had a few bad apples while the other has an entirely spoiled bunch.

@3of4: That's actually what the term "Bad Apple" is referring to. If you have a bad apple in a bucket of apples, the other apples will spoil more rapidly than if the bad apple wasn't there.

IIRC the original meaning is akin to Broken Window Theory. Broken Window Theory refers to the notion that if there's a broken window on a building, people will be willing to break more windows on said building. For example, if people see there's already a ton of litter on a street, they'll be much more willing to litter because a single drop can't be blamed for a flood.

Broken window theory is also a terrible theory of policing where poor neighborhoods are overpoliced on the theory that disproportionate punishment for minor crimes will lead to a more peaceful, clean community. Cause broken windows exist in poor communities because of vandalism and criminality, not because the owners can’t afford to replace them ASAP like in rich neighborhoods. No, clearly poor children are just bad, and cracking down on graffiti and minor marijuana sales will scare them straight.

Versus, y’know, terrifying an already poor community and making everything worse because if the cops are gonna screw you for minor infractions, you may as well do something bigger.

However, it sells well to electorates to provide "solutions" and "string the criminals up!" is very emotionally satisfying. Sadly.

That is basically what modern day American Conservatism is about, revenge and feeling good because your hurting people you think "deserve it".

I thought American conservatism was about "All your problems are your fault, but all my problems are also your fault".

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

Nah. Modern American Conservativism seems to be an mixture of both, with a hearty dollop of Corporate stranglehold on economics and a seasoning of overtly bigoted policy.

Outgoing Governor of Wisconsin Scott Walker has signed the procedural coup bill into law, gutting the power of the incoming Democratic executive.

Man, I figured if I wanted to visit a sham democracy run by fanatics who gleefully manipulate the process even after elections, I'd have to go all the way to Iran, Hungary or North Carolina. But now its all right across the border.

Not that the New Jersey thing is good, but isn't New Jersey politics (along with Illinois politics) stereotyped as being hilariously, blatantly corrupt?

Not particularly surprised.

[up][up][up] Well, keep in mind where the burden of proof is- the plaintiff or prosecutor must convince you of their case. Take that very seriously. Try to be conscious of the facts and think about the evidence and context of the case. Do NOT fall for any sexist or racist signaling or stereotypes, especially in criminal cases. And remember to google jury nullification; it’s an important concept which the court is not allowed to tell you about.

Are we still living in the 1950s? Did I miss the last more than half century of social progress? I feel like you guys are a little too downcast on this.

Okay, Friendperson, I'm done trying to give you any more chances. Every single damn time we talk about racism in this country, you rush in to tell us it's not so bad.

As if we need Nazis marching through town to see that the situation is stil shit? Please, let us know when the school to prison pipeline no longer exists. When African Americans and Native Americans are no longer disproportionately stopped, assaulted, arrested, and murdered by police. When swastikas aren't spray painted all over a Jewish professor's office. When Hispanic people aren't harassed and attacked for speaking Spanish. When people stop trying to kill Sikhs because they're brown.

Mod note: This last paragraph has been deleted for personal vitriol. Your point was made without this.

Don't mention Jury Nullification to anyone else though because they'll boot you off the case if you do.

I've always considered Jury Nullification to be a feature, not a bug of our system. Similar to prosecutorial discretion. When I've gone to jury duty, I consider the notice that we are to apply the law as given regardless of if we agree with it to come with the caveat that the goal of the proceedings is Justice over Law. When you put Law before Justice, then everyone suffers.

Or if you are just a smartass...

Personally I am...ambivalent about Jury Nullification. Maybe it's because I'm from a Civil Law Country not Common Law, but to me the abuse potential always seems egregious. I can see it's benefits, but I do consider it a two-edged blade
