The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, this reach a lefty version "the nazis were socialist" which is not a valid argument on the slightest.

My thoughts exactly, I could imagine there being right-wing communists in that once communism dominates a society the people who would be conservatives elsewhere would just be conservative in a leftist framework but to say that communism as an ideology is not left-wing because it didn't do what it wanted to do seems rather revisionist.

Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma bought tens of thousands of dollars in stock in a top defense contractor just days before he began pushing for an unprecedented $750 billion defense spending bill. When asked about his purchases, Inhofe had his financial adviser cancel the transactions, dump the stock, and avoid defense and aerospace purchases in the future. (Daily Beast)

Some news, Flynn gave the DOJ 62 hours worth of interviews and testimony and provided them with thousands of documents.

Damn, that's massive. I can totally see why they're being so easy on him, this sounds like a motherload.

Judge tosses lawsuit by GOP congressman who lost election

https://apnews.com/646e23e07a3a4f63b26e6af8ef392e68

First portion of the story:

A federal judge rejected a lawsuit Thursday by a Republican incumbent from Maine who lost the nation’s first congressional election held under a candidate-ranking system.

Democrat Jared Golden defeated Bruce Poliquin in the November contest, which allowed voters to rank up to four candidates. Poliquin won the most votes but failed to get a majority. Votes cast for two trailing candidates were then reassigned to voters’ second choices, which swung the election to Golden.

Poliquin then filed a lawsuit alleging that the new balloting system, also called ranked choice, violated the U.S. Constitution.

He asked Judge Lance Walker either to declare him the winner or order a second election for the 2nd Congressional District. But Walker, a recent appointee by Republican President Donald Trump, did neither.

The judge said he failed to see how Maine’s candidate-ranking system undercut voters’ First Amendment rights “in any fashion.” The system, he said, was “motivated by a desire to enable third-party and non-party candidates to participate in the political process, and to enable their supporters to express support, without producing the spoiler effect.”

The new method of voting “actually encourages First Amendment expression, without discriminating against any voter based on viewpoint, faction or other invalid criteria,” said Walker, a judge with the U.S. District Court in Bangor.

Walker rejected Poliquin’s arguments that ranked balloting gives some voters more expression than others or proves too confusing for the average voter. Even when votes cast for trailing candidates were reassigned, Walker said, all votes “remained and were counted.”

“The point is that ‘one person, one vote’ does not stand in opposition to ranked balloting, so long as all electors are treated equally at the ballot” Walker said.

Man, when the old, white, Republican incumbent loses northern fucking Maine, the oldest (in terms of median age), whitest, most Republican part of the oldest, whitest, most Republican New England state, they've fucked up something fierce.

And when they lose so bad a Trump-appointed judge throws out their temper tantrum, that's just... delicious.

Golden's a good pick, though.

To be fair, not all whites are the same. Sometimes I wonder if the lack of immigrants and African Americans in these parts of the US and the lack of a history of race issues makes them less receptive to race baiting - I know, that'd be the opposite pattern to the one normally observed.

I suspect that it comes down more to education access, they may be old white people, but a lot of them are well educated old white people.

@Septimus Heap: Maine is a state that is very white, but also IIRC has relatively little racism. Ironically I'd argue this might even in part be because of how white they are-there's little incentive to oppress minorities if there aren't any minorities around.

It seems to go back and forth with how that works. Like how the most anti-immigrant places are usually the one with few to no immigrants.

Also the most anti-immigrant places tend to be in ecenomic trouble, it may be that when in ecenomic trouble people look for a group to blame, if they don’t have much cultural exposure (which can be the case even with a lot of physical exposure) to other races they blame said other races.
