The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump gushes about Breitbart because Breitbart does the same for him. He's a narcissist.

That alone doesn't make him alt-right per se. Not that it makes him any less loathsome of a human being.

I'm not all that interested in splitting hairs over whether Donald is alt-right or not; while the term "alt-right" does have a use for denoting a specific subset of the far-right, it's important to remember that it unfortunately also arose as a mask for white supremacists, neo-nazis, anti-semites, and miscellaneous far-right clowns to hide behind.

I think of Trump as the Alt-Right dragging the Right their way.

The alt-right are Trump's biggest and loudest fanboys. Being a narcissist, he's naturally going to echo them (which in turn makes them even more fervently devoted to him). They're enabling each other. This is of course made easier by the fact that Trump is a bigoted white man who likes to rant on Twitter.

At least it kind of makes sense with Donald given that he is, at least, a demonstrably far-right politician. The alt-right has a habit of claiming that xyz person/work/etc is totally on their side, without any real evidence to back it up. See what happened with Taylor Swift.

They latched on to her primarily because she was a pretty white girl who didn't immediately flat out reject and denounce them. When she did eventually denounce them by announcing she'd vote for the Democratic Party they reacted predictably.

They grow more powerful when you treat them as if they are worth debating. In other words, maybe we shouldn't invite them to speak on news networks.

Mitch Mc Connell, in reversal, says Senate will vote on criminal justice bill

https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/2275332002

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell, in a shift, announced Tuesday the Senate would take up a long-awaited bipartisan bill that aims to reduce the number of people in the nation's crowded prisons.

"At the request of the president and following improvements to the legislation that have been secured by several members, the Senate will take up the revised criminal justice bill this month," the Kentucky Republican said. He said he would turn to it as early as the end of the week.

An unusual coalition of Republicans and Democrats, civil rights groups and small-government conservatives have pushed for action on the Senate bill called the “First Step Act." President Donald Trump also backs it.

The effort to pass a Senate bill had stalled as Mc Connell remained reluctant to bring it to a floor vote by the end of the year. Then pressure began to mount on him from Trump and other Republican senators.

The measure would give judges more discretion in sentencing offenders for nonviolent crimes, particularly drug offenss, and bolster rehabilitation programs for former prisoners. It would also call for placing federal prisoners closer to home – no more than 500 miles – so families could visit more often.

Funny how a large proportion of the GOP facing the prospect of federal fraud charges suddenly leads to serious discussions in both the Senate and Congress about the implementation of prison reforms for non-violent crimes...

Wonder how that works. tonguetongue

Without a doubt. Life has many tradeoffs. Proverbs that appear contradictory may be expressing aspects of your tradeoff options. This is especially true when they are expressed in conjunction.

If you just ignore them yes, but if you aggressively deplatform and suppress their activists then they can wither at the vine.

Debates will not defeat them, that will just move the Overton Window closer to their values.

So, what’s the chances of Trump getting indicted the moment he steps out of office, I wonder?

At the federal level, probably not as high as one might hope. I don't think an incoming President wants the optics of having their immediate predecessor arrested in the middle of the peaceful transition of power. Once Trump's out of office, it'll be easy to declare "Damage already done" and just let it be one of the many white-collar crimes where nobody goes to jail because laws only exist to punish the poor.

If Trump actually makes it to the end of his Presidency unimpeached, going after him for crimes will probably become the states' domain if it's not abandoned entirely. It's a different story if he's actually impeached for crimes, however.

I still don’t see a very high likelihood of there being a peaceful transition of power, Trump won’t accept loosing, he will insist that he won until the secret service drag him out by force.
