Isn't anime cartoons?

I thought that was what anime was.

Yes. Welcome to absolutely every single post in this thread.

If it's said by someone who actually knows what he's saying, so be it. It only bugs me when people use the word "cartoon" with that negative connotations. It bugs me not only because anime doesn't deserve those connotations, but because cartoons in general do not deserve them.

Anime In General doesn't deserve those connotations. Much like cartoons In General. The biggest problem seems to be that people don't seem to recognize animation (and comics, now that we are talking anyway) as a medium fit for any type of story, not just kid's stuff or comedy.

As others have mentioned on a technical level its accurate and on those grounds I don't object.

However as has also been mentioned it is too often used with people who have the Animation Age Ghetto in mind and I do object to that. Its unfair to medium as a whole, regardless of what country it originates from. Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series (and other parts of the DCAU), Wakfu, Avatar The Last Airbender and to a lesser extent... Gummi Bears are examples of high quality stuff that an adult shouldn't feel any shame in watching on their own merits.

Of course people like that... I have the urge to just strap them to a chair and force marathon Utena at them.

Well, I do think that thanks to stuff like Spirited Away, I don't see much of this, except from my younger brother who makes fun of me because I read One Piece.

Your younger brother makes fun of you? It is your responsibility as an older brother to make sure it never happens again! With your fist! Excercise your rights as an older brother!

You're missing one important piece of the equation...

Older Brother -> Power + Right to use power

I perfectly okay with anime being called cartoons. It would only bug me when the person I'm talking to uses the word cartoon in a demeaning way. Which, unfortunately, is most of the time.

Doesn't bother me at all, since anime are cartoons. I've actually always wondered why we have to make this big distinction between animation from Japan and animation from anywhere else in the world. I really only use the word "anime" because I like the way it sounds.

The quickest way to annoy me is to say cartoons and anime are two different things. They're not. Annoys me even more when someone says that the difference between cartoons and anime is that anime always has a serious, mature plot. Obviously such idiots have never watched Lucky Star.

On the flip-side, as others have said, it also annoys me when people who dislike anime call them cartoons just for the sake of implying that they're childish. As if adults don't watch cartoons too.

As for me, I usually call them "Japanese cartoons" when speaking with a person who isn't familiar with the term.

The real question is, how do you feel about anime being called "Japanimation"? [lol]

I feel people should stop making new words up when there are already much shorter and much more recognizable equivalents...

Anime is a cartoon. Just Japanese and usually 10000% better than Sponge Bob.

^ If you mean Spongebob after 2004, then I'll agree. Otherwise, it's debatable.

[up][up][up][up][up]What are you talking about? Lucky Star had one of, if not the deepest story I have ever seen in an anime.

Nah, the deepest story in an anime is definitely Twin Peaks.

Ok... Having LuckyStar here just made the argument silly. But still way cooler than Sponge Bob. Anime > Western. Because the west is doing it wrong, now, unlike before when Walt Disney was still king. The only notable western animated works are either 3D or is Warner Bros. DC. Animated marvel has already gone Japanese.

^ YMMV.

I find classic Spongebob to be more amusing than stuff like Mitsudomoe or MM!

Well I did become an otaku only in 2004... smile So I cannot compare Sponge Bob before 2004 with it's contemporary anime.

Uhhhhh Spongebob is a piece of art and way better than any comedy-based anime series.

In fact most western animation is way better than anime in terms of comedy. It doesn't help that most anime comedy is usually "panties," "boobs," "nyoro~n," or "tsun tsun...!"

I mean have you watched a single episode of Flapjack? It's comedy gold and I'd take that over Lucky Star by a long shot.

Yeah I saw Flapjack...terrible work. I mean it's tons nonsensical, especially that episode about a flea-filled rat.

The only anime comedy I've seen that comes close to/equals classic Sponge Bob is Shinryaku Ikamusume.
