There are creative ways to take down each target and you don't have to kill anybody.

"I'll give you a good example," Bare told me. "There are these two really corrupt members of Parliament you're supposed to take out. [The Pendleton Twins.] Instead of killing them, what you can do is if you meet this crime boss... Slackjaw, if you do him some favor, he'll do something for you. The Pendleton Twins have this slave mine...

"So you do a favor for Slackjaw, and basically he kidnaps them and shaves their heads and erases their identity and puts them in their own slave mines."

DAMN that's cold. Guess doing a Pacifist Run makes you a really dark Technical Pacifist, huh?

[up] Well, nobody said "pacifist" means "nice." It could simply mean that you don't wish the innocent and relatively innocent harm. . . and the guilty? You don't wish them anything so merciful as death. ;)

[up]I confess that that's my usual motivation for doing a Pacifist Run : death is too good for my enemies :-P

DO WANT this game. I've seen the E3 demos, and they pretty much made this a Day 1 purchase for me.

Sorry if this was already posted:

Q: Does the AI stay aggressive after your character has been spotted or can it become unsuspecting again when hiding? Also, will guards alert other guards of your presence? (Fabian K.)

A: The AI has several states of “alertness“, so it goes from totally unsuspecting, to suspecting, to aware, to search, then it cools down to search patrol in high alert but it never cools down to the initial state. Also, AI communicate their level of alertness to allies within range and therefore they let each other know about the presence of the player when he’s been spotted.

Q: Will there be a “game plus ” after completing the game and having all the powers and upgrades for this ” game plus “? (Sea Gull)

A: We encourage multiple playthroughs with Dishonored as 1) you can’t get all the powers and upgrades in one playthrough, and 2) there are different endings based on how you play: surgical assassin or sneaker vs. brutal killer.

The first answer seems to confirm that we won't be seeing the stupid "I have an arrow sticking out of my face. Must have been the wind" behavior from Skyrim.

I guess we've yet to see anything about the story except "you're a supernatural assassin, now go kill people," but besides that, this looks like Human Revolution with more player agency.

And no boss battles and a better emphasis on resource use.

It really looks fantastic.

Actually, the resource system seems a lot like Deus Ex's in that you regenerate X amount of energy (well, mana) automatically, and then you have to use potions after that.

Of course there's the fact that a lot of the more powerful spells use more mana than you recharge, which I think is a nice touch, rather than Human Revolution's approach of "one battery lets you do everything."

Also, on the "no boss battles" thing, we'll have to wait and see. Considering this is meant to be an "assassin goes nuts on the world" kind of plot I can imagine one corrupt MP or two being genre savvy enough to fight you head-on rather than let you sneak up on them.

They said it's possible to win the game without killing anyone so I'm betting that while there may be boss battles, if you sneak up on them you can avoid a forced combat sequence.

Also the mana doesn't regnerate. There is a very small amount that does but it's only for Blinking and no other skills iirc.

It looks like the mana is regenerating because the devs have hotkeyed a mana potion to consume automatically in those preview vids.

In general the previews make Corvo look a lot more broken than he really is.

I imagine most of the previews are fairly late-game. They did say that no player would be able to obtain all the magic skills, but I imagine you're still pretty broken towards the late-middle/endgame. That was the problem Dark Messiah had.

On that note, the first few missions are probably going to be much harder than the previews, especially since they also seem to have access to Corvo's full physical arsenal, which I also imagine takes quite a while to obtain. I imagine before you'll get to all that you'll have a few hours of stabbing people with a rusty kitchen knife and a magical power or two.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all the previews have Corvo purposely overpower in order to show off the different powers. After all the devs themselves are STILL trying to balance the game since their play testers keep coming up with uses for the powers they had not foreseen: IMHO their coolest story is when they saw a guy getting shot at by enemies who stopped time, possessed one of them and walked him right into the path of the bullets while they were still frozen in mid air. As awesome as THAT is, I cannot see that not getting some MAJOR tweaking.

Judging by the devs comments thus far in response to stuff like that (they mentioned a guy using blink to skip over 30 minutes worth of gameplay) I'm not sure they'll tweak or prevent stuff like that from happening. They talk a lot about how the skills can break the game but they're encouraging the players the try and break things and find their own ways through the game rather than limiting them in set paths.

I'm...somewhat ok with that.

I like that they're encouraging creativity though I do think they need to try and include some element of balance, else it'd be a cakewalk.

[up] That story always sounded fishy to me. The stop time thing I can see it being an actual design oversight, but are they seriously telling us that they didn't think players could *gasp* use double jumping and teleporting TOGETHER?

Okay, I just read about this on the escapist and it really wasn't too big a blip on my radar before. I mean, the steampunk world and aesthetic looked great and all but what I understood about the plot was just another Roaring Rampage of Revenge where you play as some assasin because assasins are so kewl.

Then I learned about the Pacifist Run and giving the evil targets a taste of their own medicine. So a game built around killing people, where you don't actually have to kill anyone? Brilliant. I wanna play through the whole game handing out Ironic Fates Worse Than Death in true Hoist by His Own Petard and Technical Pacifist manners really badly now.

Awesome. Loved the Make It Look Like an Accident option despite me probably going with the Pacifist Run first time around. Also hope there's a way to do that after the other girl leaves.

Watched it, looks good so far. I was watching the mana regenerating closely. Blink fully regenerates so in effect doesn't cost mana but has a minor cooldown, possession regenerates a small amount and the vision ability regenerates after a certain amount of time. Everything else costs mana and doesn't regenerate. Possession and vision regenerating may be due to how the character is specced but Blink fully regens each time.

Overall I'm quite impressed, the whole blowing out candles thing makes it clear that lighting is quite important and it had a very Thief vibe to it (though Thief would be more about shooting water arrows at the candles and torches instead). I don't think sound has as strong a place here compared to Thief. I mean guards will notice you walking or running behind them but if you're crouched they won't hear a thing, whereas in Thief they'd hear even crouched it unless you were on material like carpet- in which case you could run as fast as you want.

Judging by the gameplay and prompts it appears leaning is context sensitive rather than something the players can do at will, it's understandable since controllers have a limited number of buttons but I hope a more typical form of leaning is available in the PC version, they did say they'd be designing a separate UI for PC.

I'm not big on the markers and in game prompts everywhere, though I understand others may prefer them. I do hope that like DXHR that kind of stuff can be toggled off. I'd rather enjoy the overall atmosphere without little prompts telling me how to interact with everything (I'll figure that stuff out after the first hour so I think) and I'd rather explore and get completely lost in the world as opposed to have markers cluttering the screen and pointing everything out for me. I spent 90 minutes in one level of Thief and got completely lost with no idea where I was or where to go it made the level feel massive and I loved that.

Overall looks great, I just have a few minor nitpicks that I'm assuming can be toggled off.

Here's what I'm wondering: if you blink to the ground mid-fall, will the momentum carry on with you and make you go splat?

Psyclone Since: Jan, 2001

[up]No, I've seen footage where Corvo breaks his fall by Blinking to the ground. I think it was even in the "Drunken Whaler" trailer.

[up][up]I like this game's approach to markers in that they only appear if you actually get information about the target's position (overhear a conversation where someone says the target is in the second floor, marker appears on second floor). I like keeping waypoints on because I don't like wasting time looking for where I'm supposed to go but I never liked how they can pinpoint the places where the PC needs to go even when he himself has no idea.

By the way, I noticed in the second video that the guy on the balcony Korvo dropped on didn't seem to notice a screaming dude careening off the roof right nearby.
