So thats a lot of Nays... The Rank C examples need to go.

What to do with them though? They arnt really People Sit On Chairs there are a few connotations like soccer, tomboys, running on Rule of Cute, and a few other things that have come up in this thread mostly in non-japanese works though. I don't really care on it but it does seem to have a place (unless I am really wrong).

Do we need to get rid of the Knee Socks redirect?

I suggest we just cut the C's in the main page. When people link to the trope in work pages, that can be valid as they invoke the grading system or comparing it with other characters' grades in said work.

[up][up] That's ok with me I guess.

Cata you want to do the trimming? (Dont be too harsh in the trimming though some speak of multiple types in different outfits.)

EDIT: wow the crowner went to -4 instead of -7... maybe we better wait.

Yes, regardless of where the crowner is at any given moment, a few hours on a weekend isn't really the best decision making timeframe. Give it a couple of days, there's no rush.

Yeah, I guess we best wait for the poll to stabilise.

It actually seems pretty close to evenly slit just the way the articles say the fanbase is on the subject. We're only three votes apart from being deadlocked

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but the total has been negative for almost the entire time, reaching +1 only briefly before plunging back down.

But it's always been a close negative. Not a high negative. Like I said, it's something the fan base is split on. Not something they've agreed on.

To me that suggests a soft split might be better.

  1. The crowner has been up just over one day. That's not long enough.

  2. It's nowhere near a 2:1 consensus. (It's currently at 17 for disallowing Grade C and 14 for including it.)

No decision should be made until Tuesday evening at the absolute earliest and only then if it has moved to at least a 2:1 ratio and stayed there for a day or so.

So far it seems very divided. I have doubts it will ever reach 2:1 one way or another. Eventually we will perhaps have to compromise somehow.

One thing that I feel is important to note about the C-grade, related to the ubiquity argument that others have brought forward.

Insofar as people are able to connect Zettai Ryouiki to particular themes and characterization tropes, it is in part because while popular, its use in fiction is still notable and deliberate enough (at least in Japanese works and those that take cues from them) for one to tie thematic significance to it. Were it to become as ubiquitous as something like say, jeans or brassieres, it would cease being a trope and turn into People Sit On Chairs—it appears in fiction because this is what people wear.

Now, while it's become exponentially more popular in the last decade, "true" Zettai Ryouiki probably won't get there in the foreseeable future. I'd say the same about knee-high socks, which are not widely used outside several specific groups such as schoolgirls (which isn't to say I agree with their inclusion as examples—I don't). However, when you get to knee-high boots (and nobody so far has argued that boots are not an equivalent to socks when it comes to the trope), such ubiquity does actually exist. They're everywhere, they have been for decades, and have long lost all meaning beyond "women wear them, oftentimes with short skirts/dresses". How would that square with the trope's Japanese trappings?

[up] I had said earlier we should make a separate trope for the C examples to cover those. A YKTTW for more general usage and such would work IMO

Those are more narrowly defined than simply "knee-high boots". They generally involve stiletto heels that are at least 3.5 to 4 inches tall, tight shafts (rather than straight ones, like riding boots have), and they're usually shiny.

I still don't see how "Grade C" qualifies at all. I mean, if they at least went over the knee (I'd link to an example, but at work and not going to go on Danboo from here...) sure, but as it is, they're just socks.

[up][up][up] And you were trying to clean this up? lol

The C examples in anime and manga push cuteness or normal Girl Next Door types Angel Beats has quite a variety The only one with a C that stands out is the Highly Visible Ninja (And hers could very well be a B)

There are a few from different series that are standouts (and the camera points these out via Shes Got Legs or Leg Focus) but not too many.

Generally the word "Fuck" is not a good title.

Anyways after looking at a majority of the C examples I am fine for removal. (changed my vote)

Alright, here's what I was talking about earlier. These are higher than "Grade C" but lower than "Grade B" Over-kneehighs (Image is safe, site is not). you can use that tag to take a look at other examples. Thats the lowest I think would qualify as Zettai Ryouiki.
