On every show/book/etc. page there would be a button for a recommendations page. It would list a bunch of titles that you might like if you like the show. Of course you'd be required to say why you think the shows are similar. The best part would be that it wouldn't be limited to medium so we could have "If you like Harry Potter you might also like Mahou Sensei Negima" so it would be very useful for getting in to new mediums.

Harry Potter and Negima? WTF.

Anyway a Recommendations namespace (with a tab) could be really nice. A section on same author first off followed by others separated by medium with a format like

However all would be YMMV and might be Justifying Edit and natter magnets.

We could have people sign the recommendations as we already do with Fan Fic Recommendations to decrease the natter problem.

What would be the purpose of duplicating the effort that Amazon, imdb, Borders and hulu have all gone through doing the same exact thing?

We could do it based on trope usage?

[up][up] I'd never trust amazon or imdb — but I would read troper-recommendations grin

[up][up][up]But those are all limited by medium (Well, except for Amazon which just gives you recommendations based on what people buy together like: If you like Angel Beats you might also like Dance In The Vampire Bund.) But this wouldn't be limited by medium. So you could do recommendations for Webcomics/Newspaper Comics or even Anime/Live-Action Television. So you could even use it to get in to new mediums that you haven't tried before.

I think it's a great idea!

so how will we base reccomendations on?

Will there be sections based on what other shows/books/films have in common with it? I'm seeing sections for character, setting, narrative devices, etc.

Like under characters there could be something along these lines "If you the enjoy reading The Linus protagonist of Calvin and Hobbes you will like Lilo and Stitch the real thing would have more detail obviously

I don't think this is going to fly. We don't want to be put in the position of recommending works, because that makes it look as if the wiki is doing reviews. It's just another place we'd have to monitor for Gushing and Complaining. If you want to recommend related works in a review, have at it. It's signed by you so we know it's not TV Tropes doing the recommending.

FYI, we have a Trope Intersect widget (find it on Itty Bitty Wiki Tools) that lets you compare two articles for common trope usage.

Another thing to note is that one can click on most Tropes, and see them in other works. Crosslinking basically gives you a bit of recommendations on the other various works. If you will.

Let's say I look at Golden Sun. I see a trope. I click it, and can find other series with that same trope. In other words, I just got recommended. It might be a stretch, but we actually have this already done, if only stealthily.
