@ Ultimately Subjective: I've seen it done once, when someone's post wasn't in the wrong at all but the post they were responding to was thumped.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

No Wiki markup does not stop thumps from happening.
The thump replaces the entire post body so obviously escape sequences are fruitless.

Thumping yourself doens't send a PM and I'm fairly sure it doesn't appear on your record.
not even with a cinnamon coloured thump?
Well, I don't know how the thump records work (if it just lists messages that got system-thumped by mods or searches for all thumped messages), but the former would make more sense.

Programming and surgery have a lot of things in common: Don't start removing colons until you know what you're doing.

Thumping yourself doens't send a PM and I'm fairly sure it doesn't appear on your record.

Correct.

not even with a cinnamon coloured thump?

No, not even with that.

presumably I can't PM myself!

You can, actually. I did once, when I wanted to test if certain markup tools work in PMs.

So I assume a mod probably wouldn't use the base thump right?

No, we wouldn't.

The thump replaces the entire post body so obviously escape sequences are fruitless.

Correct.

I think I can help all of you by telling you that mods don't thump posts by editing them. Instead, we have a button (like the ones for editing your post, accessing you avatar gallery and sending you a PM) with a picture of a lightning bolt in it. When we click it, it opens up a menu from which we pick the thump we wanna give you. So there's no way at all that you can accidentally give yourself a thump that would show up on our record, as only thumps given with the thump tool count as official. (Correction: you can accidentally give yourself an official thump by posting something thumpable by accident, but a mod still has to give you the thump.)

Self-thumps don't appear on you permanent record, and are different from mod thumps in appearance too. Compare a [[rules] thump by yourself and one by a moderator to see the difference.

[up] Shhhhhhh, you're giving too many [MOD SECRETS] away! evil grin

[up][up]I'm giving them just enough that they keep wanting more. That way, I have them under my control.

On third thought, maybe my first thought was correct. :(

-le sigh-

Although I am curious if there's a way to access the edit history of a particular post.

Gosh, I'm just being so self-defeating right now, now that I think about it.

Okay, that makes sense. Is that why a mod-given thump doesn't go away on a post that's gone through the troll crusher — it isn't text in the post, but a separate button? If it doesn't count as divulging tooooo many [MOD SECRET]s, is there a funny icon on the thump button?

Also, you should so make a new thump (one that we can access, hopefully) for talking about [MOD SECRET].

[MOD SECRET]

is there a funny icon on the thump button?

I'm pretty sure that Eddie described all of the mod buttons in a post somewhere, but since I'm not sure, I won't give you very much info.

I can tell you, though, that the thump tool has a lightning bolt and the skullfuck button has a white skull on black background.

Don't worry, DC, we'll just read that off your brain with the tool the CIA gave us that uses that thing they have installed on every PC monitor sold in the Northern hemisphere.

Wait, was that a [MOD SECRET]?

I'm afraid I've received special FBI training in shielding my mind from such... pitiful attempts at probing.

Although the better question is why the CIA of the USA would give special tools to people over in Finland. I know our government is pretty dumb, but dang.

I don't see why that would be a mod secret, but whatever.

What do I know, anyway? I'm just a lowly grunt in this machinery.

[up]It's probably because if they revealed it, there might be an associated programming bug that would allow this to be visible to regular users.

You know, the first time I saw the skullfuck button, I thought the system had gone crazy.

I've never seen a thread with so much a mix of delighted loopiness (for lack of a better word that actually has nothing to do with being loopy) and genuine fear.
