[up] Yeah, let's ignore the most confusing fact about all of this: the fact that things should apparently work perfectly well as a list of names. =/

I'm sorry, but demand that "Reader should not read trope article, the title alone should be enough" attitude strikes as Viewers Are Morons...

But having to look up what someone is talking about in the middle of a sentence because you don't know a word and lack the context is even more grating because then you have to wander off to another page instead of just seeing a little phrase to help you out.

It's possible someone would have to look up what Bathos is, but we don't change it to "Bathos (story-telling technique)". It's possible someone would have to look up Yakuza, but we don't call it Yakuza (gangster). This isn't something we do anywhere else.

Then there's any and all technical terms, unfamiliar words, and things which you can't remember the exact meaning for.

Can Fast Eddie jump in and explain if the Laconic mouse over thing would be possible, once we fix the Laconics so that they actually make sense?

Sure, if you think the laconics can be fixed.

Good luck with that. tongue

Last time I tried to get an effort going to clean up Laconic (before we had Special Efforts, mind), it went nowhere because the majority of the people thought Laconic wasn't in trouble. We might have critical mass this time, though, and I will certainly help out with that.

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

If no one starts a thread until later, I'm starting it. We should start cleaning up laconics.

That's reminds me...

I've attempted to get laconics fixed. It never goes anywhere.

Shouldn't this be in Special Efforts, if it's as widespread of a problem as you claim? Not that I know, I rarely to never look at Laconics.

Important question, that.

Well, from what I've seen, Laconic entries are usually for humor's sake. If they are that important, though, it would help to fix them.

Laconics for humour cause trope decay, natter, misinformed ideas of what tropes actually are, and are generally bad for the wiki.

Then we ought to make an effort to clean it up properly.

Started a Special Efforts thread here. Let's hope this goes better than my poorly thought-out TRS thread on the subject.

Special Efforts is probably more suited to fixing an entire namespace, though.

How is this going to work though with the fact that older browsers generally show only 20 characters of alt-text? It's really more of a modern thing to be able to show long strings of alt text. Until recently even firefox needed a specific plugin for longer strings.

^^Isn't Laconic Wiki a Namespace in itself?

I mean, functionally, it's a decent idea, but tech wise it's kind of impractical seeing as it doesn't actually work for the majority of the internet.

People are going to update sooner or later and this doesn't seem like a quick-fix, more a long term thing. There's always the alternate possibility of putting it as a subtitle-type thing on the page itself.

Actually, just the opposite tends to be true. There's a group of users that update regularly, but the majority are stuck with old tech and old O Ses for various reasons. IE 6 still has a huge market share.

How much older are we talking? Because on any modern browser, that's not an issue.

IE 6 doesn't support longer alt text?

More than one version back it's an issue for just about any browers. Two for Firefox, but it's a very recent thing that they fixed. Basically, anything from 2009 or before is likely going to have issues right out of the box.

According to the only stats I'm aware of, most IE users are on IE 8. On the other hand, w3schools' stats aren't necessarily representative of the internet at large.
