I feel like a broken record though but... My suggestion for Yuri as remove it from a redirect to Girls Love and make it a Fan Speak page describing all its uses

  • Fan Fiction means girl on girl smut,
  • Anime and manga use it for Girls Love, the Genre and just relationships.
  • Its a common girls name in Japan and a Guys name in russia several Japanese games have featured guys named it (one was gay the other was half Japanese half russian)
  • Yuri Fan
  • And expand Girls' Love page to include series where its a major focus but not the main focus. (I brought this one up in the repair shop thread earlier today)

Since when someone says the word Yuri they could be talking about the genre or relationships, Yuri Fan is talking about both (Yaoi Fan Girl is as well.)

I would have been fine with Girls Love Genre. (since we are on a genre hunt.) Same with Boys' Love (Bara I am not going to even touch with a 10 foot pole....)

[down] sorry its 3 AM here.

I will have to wait for Eddie to explain his reasoning, then.

(Incidentally, it's would have, not would of.)

I just read the last dozen pages, and this is getting ridiculous. I kinda want to post my opinions on the subject, but I don't want to add to the mess that this topic already is.

So, I clean my hands of this. Good day.

Sorry about that. I'll probably post something constructive later, but I did want to make the point that this thread has gotten kinda... silly.

Also, reading the first page is hilarious as people compare the term Girls' Love to Yuri Genre.

It has gotten rather silly...

But there was no need to post in so condescending a matter. Any contributions are welcome.

Are we taking a Viewers Are Morons approach to names, now? The need to append 'Genre' or 'Demographic' to anything slightly unclear is going to be of no use whatsoever, since it gives people none of the specifics and leads to a second word being randomly interjected into the conversation*

. If anything, we seem to be heading for 'Simple English names', which is... strange and probably not the best choice of language for a place devoted to cataloguing patterns in fiction.

Why is it that Raso's question regarding YKTTW subtitles being added to the main pages is repeatedly ignored without comment? It makes sense and we could stop worrying about incorrect names being forced through for 'clarity'.

There are more problems than that.

Are you willing to write the coding to allow that to happen?

[up] I'm more concerned about the 'ignored without comment' thing, since it implies the suggestion hasn't even been acknowledged for some reason—not that it has been acknowledged and then discarded.

As for 'would I be willing'? If I had the knowledge to do so, yes, it's not as if I actually have much else to do with my time. However, I don't, so...

That's a good idea, but the quality of the laconics are an issue in their own right. To promote them to a more critical role is a bit tricky.

The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Most of the other people here don't, either. The coding of the site is pretty much entirely up to Eddie. Every feature/change people ask for, he has to code.

As it is, there's not exactly an incentive to fix whatever's wrong with Laconics, given they're sitting there in their own namespace and you have to seek them out to see them.

[up] Wouldn't most of the code for this already be extant, though, in YKTTW?

Rainy Daze, if adding English words like "Demographic," "Genre" or "Inn" is the compromise that Fast Eddie is willing to accept in order to preserve the Japanese word like Shonen or Ryokan, than I'm willing to accept it. My only concern then becomes that the word used is the correct one. Besides, for words like Yuri, it may be useful to make it clear that you are talking about the Yuri Genre and not Yuri Island, one of the two languages named Yuri, the Russian name Yuri, etc. etc. Even Shonen has a meaning beyond its use as a marketing demographic. According to The Other Wiki, it also has a legal use in Japanese juvenile law. Therefore, by tagging Demographic onto the word, we make it more clear that we are talking about a marketing demographic and not other legitimate Japanese uses of the word.

I'd imagine it'd be fairly difficult to link a page's text to alt-text.

[up] What has alt-text got to do with it? I'm confused...

[up][up] The problem comes when custom titles*

are used to force the new name to be used, regardless of whether or not it actually reads properly in any given sentence. Not to mention that, most of the time, it reveals too little to make the name useful without reading the page it's linked to.

I would support undoing to custom title, and then making Shōnen Demographic the primary name and having Shonen and Shōnen Genre as redirects. However, any further discussion of Shonen should probably be taken to the following Trope Repair conversation.

I was simply using Shonen as an example of where adding Demographic would not be a major problem.

It's also not anything of a help, either, since you still have to click the link to find out what it refers to. Plus it's awkward to use in sentences.

@794 I could accept "shoujo" as the One True Romanization if not for the fact that English quite frequently drops off the characters that represent long vowels. "Shounen" frequently sees the same fate (based off the same kanji character, no less), and it's not really a problem.

Or, to put it another way - when we start saying that the capital of Japan is Toukyou, and when we start referring to Ayumu Kasuga of Azumanga Daioh as Oosaka (and, relatedly, always refer to the city as such), then we can insist with all correctness that you must romanize every part of a long vowel when rendering a Japanese word in English.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.
