HERE WE GO!

Signups and Discussion

Spring had, by now, seeped into every particle of the kingdom of Cyprilion, leaving a sweet, flowery scent in the air and giving everything and everyone a warm glowy feeling in the pit of their stomach. It was normally a peaceful time; a time when people could sit back and congratulate themselves for successfully getting through another winter without dying of starvation or boredom*

. Butterflies flittered over green, dewy meadows, dryads poked their heads out from the safety of their forest homes, and shepherds played soft flute music in their fields.

Oh, and on the twenty-first day of the first month of spring, the capital city of Aqui threw a huge, spectacular festival.

Aqui was no stranger to festivals, and the citizens generally prided themselves on being able to party. They had festivals for every occasion you could think of and possibly a few more, but this particular festival was special. This festival was, in a nutshell, the biggest birthday party the kingdom had witnessed since the queen’s fortieth*

.

This festival was the celebration of Crown Princess Jocelyn’s sixteenth birthday, and the people of Cyprilion would be damned if they weren’t going to make it awesome. Every entertainer worth their salt was out on the streets, dancing, singing, playing an instrument, acting, fire-eating, throwing pies and generally just causing beautiful mayhem. Street vendors jostled for space in the corners of the road, turning the entire city into a bizarre hybrid of market place and theatre, and the entire city surged through this makeshift monstrosity like a cacophonic tidal wave.

The crowds got steadily thicker as one reached the royal palace, coming to a head right under the eighteenth balcony on the southern wall of the main building, where a tall, burly man in ornate red robes stood, his long hair and beard stirred slightly by the breeze, his red face shining with joy and excitement.

"PEOPLE OF CYPRILION!" he roared, raising what appeared to be a tankard in his right hand, adjusting the golden crown that sat atop his head. "TODAY, MY DAUGHTER JOCELYN HAS OFFICIALLY COME OF AGE. TODAY, I RECOGNISE HER PLACE AS A FULLY-FLEDGED MEMBER OF SOCIETY. TODAY, I, KING HAROLD, MAKE IT MY SOLEMN DUTY TO ANNOUNCE THAT THIS PARTY HAS STARTED!"

Iskar Blank looked around the festive street. "So" he murmered to himself "This is the famous city, Aqui. interesting." Someone watching carefully Might have noticed the occasional flicker about what appeared to be a fifteen-year-old. even then, most would have dismissed it as a trick of the light. Those who didn't would likely assume it the flicker of some wizard or witches power. Very few would have realized that the young man was in fact a shapeshifter.

Jester Mattis smiled as he looked on upon the festivities. "I'll admit, one thing Cyprilion does right is parties. The only time you'd see this large of a crowd in Noverin is when someone's getting executed. Or assassinating the King. Again. It's a nice change of pace, right Granny?"

Suddenly, a deep, woman's voice spoke, seemingly coming from the sword at his side.

"While I will admit it's nice to see a little happiness," The Blade Known As Tornado replied, "Stay on your toes. You are a representative of the Noverin court, so you need to be on your best behavi-"

"OOOH! Fried dough! I can still be taken seriously while eating it right, Granny?"

Tornado groaned, "Did you not hear a word I said? Honestly, you little-"

"There's also a booth for that sword polish you like so much."

"... I guess we can indulge a little bit..."

Smiling, Jester walked towards the booth. He was going to have an audience with the King later, so he might as well have a full stomach beforehand, right?

The buzz of a pair of human-sized dragonfly wings heralded the coming of Cuidightheach Whim, just Whim to his business associates, Cody to everyone else. The fairy was flying in a more or less straight, although occasionally whimsically distracted, path to the palace. He was looking for inspiration, which, considering his abilities and day job could be called ironic. It was, however, not as ironic as it would seem, as the fairy was quite unable to inspire himself in any way. Even inspiring new ways to inspire was out of the question, and Cody had tried everything, well, everything except for this.

He wasn't exactly sure how this was going to work, but he figured mortals had to get inspiration on their own somehow, too, so it was worth a shot. The pouch hanging from a cord around his neck swung freely as he flew, and it was with some difficulty he managed to stop himself from clutching it. He tried to act casually and reminded himself to hide it in his shirt when he got the time, if any a cutpurse knew what sort of artifact the pouch held, he'd have a right hassle keeping it safe, and it wasn't like he could wear it without making this harder than it would have to be. "Hm hm hm, inspiration." He hummed to himself to the tune of the latest work he had inspired.

Siorai Dleacht might have been noticing the festivities in all its charm and colorful grandeur...were it not for the fact that she was far too busy with business. That was almost always, of course, but today was a very desperate day. A week without any fairy godmothering was starting to make her choke. This was her last chance, her very last reprieve. A princess needed her wishes come true, right? Or maybe a noblewoman, or someone, anyone!

"Yes, yes, I know you've told me before but...why deprive a birthday girl of just one wish?" the fairy tittered at a royal guard, adjusting her reading glasses. Today she was putting on her best look - a full length blue gown complete with opera gloves and a silver tiara. If she was going to be a professional, she needed to look like one. But her wings belied her nervousness as they flittered erratically like an malfunctioning motor.

"And even then, there must be someone in the royal court with a few unfounded dreams or two..." she chuckled, more nervously than she would prefer, as she pulled out her business card from her satchel. "I'm one of the best in the field, so you know I'll do a fantastic job...need a recommendation? I have plenty!"

If this wasn't going to work, then it was back to the pub she went. What happened to dreaming and wishes, she wondered to herself. Isn't that what every human wanted?

Iskar wandered down the street a bit, observing the many magical creatures present in the city today. Just down the street he observed a fried dough stand. Someone watching carefully would've noticed that his mouth grew just a tiny bit bigger as he drooled. Iskar ran towards the stand, searching his pockets for money as he did so.

Admiral awoke in the loft of a stable by the sounds of celebration, having slept in as always. He wasn't aware of the celebration planned for today, and was thus confused by all the noise. He exited the stable shortly after, blinking in the sunlight. To say he was upset by being woken up would be a lie of course. Being upset just wasn't in his style unless something seriously wrong had occured.

No, he was just curious what all the uproar was about; like if the city was under seige or something. After realising it was a celebration, he smiled and quickly asked someone what it was about. "Ah, the little princess is legal now?" he joked, hand on his chin in thought. To the outside observer that might've made him look like he had unpure intentions, but he really didn't.

Now, this was the city of Aqui, wasn't it? Admiral was pretty certain there was at least one potion shop here somewhere that he technically owned.

People were expected to get gifts for the Princess or technically her father on such a day, right? Well, he didn't have anything on him he could give, but maybe if he stopped by that shop...

He wandered down one of the streets, passing through the crowds as he searched. He passed by some teen that seemed to flicker for the briefest moment, but Admiral didn't really care what that was about.

At the door to the palace, a young guard in a neat lilac uniform stood, nervously twisting his hands as he tried to deal with the fairy godmother,

"Um... Well... Um... I'm sorry, but we've already scheduled the princess' wishes for today. I really don't think we can fit any more in..." he stuttered, pulling up a notebook and flicking his straightened auburn fringe out of his eyes. "Yeah, sorry, the princess has had her own fairy godmothers for years. The... um..." he glanced at his notebook. "The Rhubarb sisters. They're a team. I think." He twisted his mouth a little apologetically. " Sorry..." He paused. "Um, have you considered, like, an advertising campaign or something? Because, I dunno, there could be a lot of people out there in need of wishes... actually, I'd be interested myself if my parents weren't against that... I'm sure if you just keep looking, you'll find someone in need of help. Maybe."

In a small, tastefully decorated drawing room near the balcony the king had spoken from, a teenaged girl sat, beautiful face buried in her pale, slender hands. A silver tiara was buried amongst her long, jet-black curls, glimmering with tiny, deep blue stones that perfectly matched her beautifully-embroidered gown.

" You've got to be kidding me..." she groaned as King Harold wandered in from the balcony, sipping from his tankard in a rather regal manner.

"What's wrong, pumpkin?" he asked, sitting down on the couch beside the girl. "Cheer up. It's your birthday."

"Dad. Please, please tell me you are not already drunk."

"Of course not," replied Harold jovially, waving a hand around. "I'm just hung-over, that's all. Daddy can hold his liquor, you know, and it's only ten o' clock."

"You're not even going to try to stay sober, are you?"

"Oh, come on, Jo," replied Harold, nudging his daughter's arm. "It's your birthday party! I'm just trying to keep spirits high."

"Yeah, I can see you're really into 'spirits,'" retorted Jocelyn, staring pointedly at the tankard in the king's hand. Harold shook his head.

"This is beer," he said loftily. "Beer and spirits are entirely different things, as any seasoned drinker knows." He sighed. "Just go out and enjoy your birthday party, OK? Get to know some more of your people! The entire city has come out today to cheer for you."

"The entire city has come out to watch you embarrass yourself."

Harold chuckled. "Perhaps, perhaps. Anyway-" he lightly clapped Jo on the back "- go on, miss Crown Princess. Get out there and mingle with your future subjects." With a sigh, Jo got to her feet and walked out the door, rolling her wide blue eyes in exasperation.

If she had to face the people after her father's display, she had better do so before the old drunk decided to join her.

Reaching the stand, Jester pulled out his coin purse and slapped down some money.

"Two please!"

Picking up one and bringing it to his mouth, he stopped mid-bite.

"Let me guess," Tornado sighed, "Forgot about your arm."

Looking down at the useless appendage, Jester shrugged. "Honestly, you'd think I'd have remembered that by now."

Seeing a newcomer run up, Jester smiled. Whelp, might as well get something out of this.

"Hey, if you want some, I have one extra."

Iskar eyed the stranger suspiciously. Then he shrugged. "thanks" He said, taking the fried dough, figuring it was some human custom. "You don't look like your frome here" He started, more to fill the silence

then from any real curiousity. While talking he focused on the pendant around his neck, trying to stop the shimmering that occured. The elders of his race never shimmered he remembered glumly. Maybe he should've waited before leaving home.

Cody spotted a fellow fairy. It looked like she was in a bit of a pickle, it looked like it wasn't dangerous, nor any business of his. Thus, he reasoned, perfect reason to let this poor uneducated fae lady a hand. He wasn't good at coming up with things on the fly, which was what made it so nice that he had been pondering and planning for a situation similar to this one since he decided to go on the festival. "She doesn't have a muse, though, does she? Not easy to get a muse that'll respond to your beck and call, after all, we're a temperamental bunch, yanno, don't work for no-one, well, don't work for no-one most days, today's proper special, isn't it? Exciting day, very exciting, you excited, good sir?"

At the mention of the Rhubarb Sisters, Siorai's smile became very wane as she tightly gripped her satchel. How dare those amateurs do the work of fulfilling a princess' wishes? They'd screw it up, ruin it! A princess needed the hand of a talented soul, one who knew the leylines of magic like they knew their own heart. And what was this about "planning" wishes? How soulless! For all the paperwork and contracts, wishing wasn't something that could be planned!

It was...it was...changed. The fairy took a deep breath and stared through the doorman. The art had changed since she had first taken the job...

She was already planning to hit the bar once again when the boy mentioned an advertising campaign, and more importantly his own desires for a wish. That made her stand to attention, her demeanor as professional as always.

"Why, thank you dear boy for giving me the idea" she said, her smile as brilliant as a fairy godmother's should be. "I think I'll go and do just that; after all, there is no shortage of dreams in a place like Cyprilion..."

With that she started to make her way out towards the street, but not before discreetly handing the boy her business card. "If you ever want anything, you know who to call. Wishing isn't something to be defined by parents, anyway. How droll..."

She gave the muse fairy one look that seemingly dripped with "Good luck kid" before she made headway back out into the street. If a fairy godmother couldn't make it, a muse fairy had even less of a chance. If wishes were being planned, then inspiration was certainly out of the question. What was he doing offering his services, anyway? Muse fairies, as she remembered, were a very fickle bunch. A little odd to see one so readily handing out his inspiration like candy...

Once she had made a decent headway away from the castle and nearby some kind of stand, she leaned against the wall and pulled out her magic wand. It appeared to be a crystalline cool blue, adorned with three ornate circles within each other with two pairs of crystal wings on both top and bottom. Within the smallest innermost circle was a star, glittering like a natural night light. There was a boy with a fascinating sword and apparently a very dead arm, but that could be pondered about later.

As much as she hated using magic like this, it was vital if she was going to get back on track. Siorai gave her wand a dramatic whirl, which revealed a shimmering portal in front of her.

Thank you for contacting Cyprilion Network Inc, where your message is always the most important message. How may I help?

"Give me Fhogairt's Advertising Agency, will you?" The fairy said in her most polite tone, still gripping her magic wand. "And do be quick, I would hate to contact him during the ceremony."

Your wish is our command, INSERT NAME HERE you'll be receiving contact shortly...

She really needed to register her name soon. INSERT NAME HERE was getting very grating at times.

"Iskar Blank" Iskar replied. He noticed a fairy hovering nearby, and immediatly redoubled his efforts not to shimmer. He'd always found fairys to be annoyingly curious. "So, a knight huh. Must be pretty intersting, saving damsels, killing dragons and all that?" Iskar suddenly lost his concentration for a second and a paticularly large shimmer ran down his lower body. "Well, it's only my first real assignment, but with how things go in Cyprilion, I give it ten minutes before my skills are need. Isn't that right, Tornado?"

Noticing the shimmer, Tornado's voice was wary. "There's something, unusual about this boy..."

"What? Granny, you're supposed to be the thing that makes people go, 'Hey that Jester guy is awesome! He has a talking sword and everything!' Can't you at least give me that?"

Ignoring him, Tornado addressed Iskar. "You. Boy. Where do you hail from?"

Iskar sighed. He'd quickly learned that few humans trusted shapeshifters. Probably something to do with the fact that if they wanted to a shapeshifter could commit a crime in one form, then change to another. "I'm a shapeshifter" he said quietly.

Siorai waited as patiently as possible for her call to connect, more than a little annoyed that Cyprilion Network Inc. were filthy liars and her message really wasn't that important to them. Alas, she would have to wait.

While the fairy was waiting, she couldn't help but to eavesdrop on the fascinating conversation next to her. Apparently that boy was a knight of sorts, a newly christened one at that. With a talking sword! In her long life Siorai had seen a few of those, but they were certainly not a dime a dozen. Were she a more stereotypical fairy she would be on it like dragons on princesses.

But...didn't knights have dreams too? Plenty of them, even! Saving princesses, fighting dragons, being the hero and all that jazz! She may not need Fhogairt's services, for she may have already found a candidate...

As for the boy, well, that shimmer was obvious. She had seen plenty of his kind back in the Darkest Forest, although why he was here of all places was certainly something of interest.

"A shapeshifter, is it?" the fairy called out from her spot, trying to politely butt her way into the conversation as gently as possible. "With all that shimmering, I'd say you're a little too young to be out on your own..."

Swords don't normally talk!" Iskar scowled as the fairy told everyone on the street what he was. Without waiting for a response from Jester he turned to the fairy "shhhhhh!" He hissed, wincing as people turned to look at him.

"E-Excited? Well, I guess... I mean, maybe. I don't know..." muttered the guard, blinking as the card was slipped into his hand and the fairy godmother drifted away. "Oh! Um... Thank you!" he called after her, glancing down at the card. For a moment, he stared at it, a little crestfallen. Then, with a sigh, he pocketed the card and glanced up, just as a young page boy rushed over and tapped his elbow.

" Hey, Robert! Did you see the princess come outside?" he whispered excitedly. " They reckon she left through the kitchen door, and just started wandering around talking to people so she wouldn't attract too much attention."

"What?" replied Robert sharply.

"Yeah!" answered the boy, rather inarticulately. "I'm gonna run around and see if I can spot her!"

"Don't you have work to do-" the guard yelped as the boy dragged him by the arm.

"Come on! You can help me!"

"But I have to guard the-"

"The princess isn't even in there, anyway! What are you guarding?" Robert sighed as he was dragged away

This looks like the right place Admiral thought, walking into a potions shop. Inside was a somewhat obese man with a large mustache and wearing overalls. Currently he was going over some stock records on the front counter.

As he saw Admiral walk in, he cleared his throat. "Sorry sir, we're currently only selling our stocks through a street vendor right now. On account of the celebrations, obviously. If you'd like a potion, you'll have to track him down" the man said, then looked back down.

Undeterred, Admiral looked around at the potions on the shelves curiously. "Tell me, who is the legal owner of this shop?" Admiral asked the man.

"Split ownership between myself and some Admiral who goes by the call of 'loser'. I run the store and he gets a quarter of our profits... I don't think he's ever sent anyone to collect, actually" the man replied.

"How much money is saved up for Mr. Loser?" Admiral said, taking a potion off the wall to read the label more closely then set it back.

"Well, since the time of the contract... It'd be a sum of nearly ten thousand gold by now" the man muttered after thinking it over a few moments.

Admiral walked over to the counter with a grin on his face. "That'll make an excellent gift for the princess. I'll take it now then" he told the man.

"What? Don't be preposterous! Loser is a Neko, a cat-person as I've heard!" the man said, confused by the turn of events.

"Half-Neko, my good sir. And I've found myself in town just as this celebration occured but have no gift for the future queen. That just won't do, will it?" Admiral asked, still smiling.

The man paused, then went through the books on his desk a moment and grabbed a pen from a drawer. "If you're really the Admiral, then sign this here and write in the sum you're taking" the man told Admiral, handing him the pen and turning one of the books around. Admiral didn't have to see the slight glowing from the pen to guess that it was magical. Undoubtedly something to make sure whoever was signing the name was genuine or not. After signing the page with 'Admiral Loser' and writing in 10,000 gold next to it, he handed the pen back to the man. The man looked at the signature as if waiting for something. When nothing happened, he looked somewhat distraught. "It really is... We- We don't have ten thousand gold right now. We'll have to call in debts and such to obtain it" he stammered.

"I don't need the money myself. Just send it to the palace once you have it, with instructions that it is to go to the princess personally as a gift from me" Admiral said, then gave a slight bow. "If I can get permittance to the palace, I shall go inform her of my gift's sending personally" he added. Then he left the store and started heading for the palace, coincidentally heading right towards where a certain knight, shapeshifter, and one or more fairies were speaking with each other.

This sudden, unexpected twist for the best left Cody a little bit apprehensive. On one hand, he wouldn't have to test out his somewhat dubious fast-talking skills, and the way onward was more or less free. On the other hand, it didn't really seem all that interesting any more, his potential partner in crime had gone away. He knew he should have tried Inspiring her... then again, his powers worked wonkily if he tried to use them on another fairy, wonkier than usual, anyway, plus, the Princess wouldn't be there. He wasn't sure why he wanted to Inspire her, possibly because a gift on the birthday was an important custom, and a lot of fairies were all about customs, he wasn't, though, so he chalked it up to a rare stroke of inspiration of his own. "Right, well, I'll just.." He said, retrieving his ring from his pouch as he headed into the palace proper. If he got into trouble, he figured, he could always rely on his #1 asset for de-screwing of his fine self.
