Lighter and Softer Fairytale RP (a.k.a Tales of Cyprilion)

Discussion

The RP

OK, so I’ve seen a lot of signup threads advertising "Darker and Edgier" fantasy R Ps, and it’s got me thinking. Why are they all darker and edgier? Where are the Lighter and Softer ones to compare to?

So after looking around for a while and figuring out that the lighter and softer fantasy R Ps, if they ever existed, are either dead or hiding from me*

, I realised something.

I can make an RP, too!

...Ta-da!

Welcome to the kingdom of Cyprilion, where the king is possibly an alcoholic, the queen is quite probably insane and the world just. Got. Awesome.

Cyprilion is undergoing a magical revolution; new breakthroughs by wizards at the Royal Academy have yielded fantastic results that are set to yank the kingdom right out of its medieval-themed rut. In addition the capital city, Aqui, is in its heyday, exerting huge cultural and political influence over the rest of the known world.

Yep, life is good.

I mean, you could go on about tiny details, like the massive hostile empire lurking hungrily on the western border, or the migratory dragons that kidnap the Crown Princess every few years, or that gang war that’s been going on between the forest witches and the dryads for about a decade. But why spoil everyone’s fun? You need to lighten up, and that’s why this kingdom exists.

Alright, rules and stuff you need to know:

  • General RP etiquette still applies here. You know the drill, just be reasonable.
  • This is a fairly free-form RP; your character will pretty much be able to do whatever they want. There is a plot, but you’ll have time to get involved with other stuff, or even run your own subplot.
This is a Lighter and Softer RP, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be occasional serious moments. Admittedly, some of the logic that this world runs on is not exactly sensible (think Discworld), but that doesn’t mean everyone has to be happy all the time. That would get unnerving really quickly.
  • That being said, don’t come here with the intention of grim-darkifying the RP. That kind of defeats the purpose.
  • Your character will start in the Royal Palace at Aqui. It’s up to you to find a reason for their presence there; if you can’t think of an excuse, there’ll be one in the first post of the actual thread, providing this thing kicks off at all.
  • Magic: three kinds. There is academic magic, which takes years of study and hard work, and is fuelled by spells and charms, usually spoken or written down. Practitioners of academic magic are called wizards. Then there’s witchcraft (practiced by witches), which also takes years to master but is a much more intuitive thing, fuelled by harmony with the environment around the witch and their own emotions. The third kind of magic is that practiced by the various magical creatures that roam the land, and it can take a variety of different forms.
  • Magical creatures – Basically, Cyprillion and its neighbours are inhabited by a wide variety of magical creatures, all of which work mostly the same way they do in actual fairytales. Which means pretty much anything you can think of could exist here. You can even have one as a PC if you like, as long as it isn’t overpowered.

Generic signup sheet ahoy!

  • Name – I’m sure you can work that out for yourself.
  • Gender – There are three to choose from; male, female, and “undecided.”
  • Age – How old are you?
  • Race – Human or… something else?
  • Appearance – What does your character look like?
  • Equipment – Clothing and other random junk your character may have on their person. For example, wizards might carry a tome, or an engraved pendant, or something else to concentrate their power.
  • Skills – What can your character do? Are they a witch? Knight? Can they dance the Can-Can? That would be kind of awesome.
    • Familiar – This only applies if you’re a witch, but witches can occasionally form a bond with a particular creature. What’s yours? (Include name, gender, appearance, personality and skills.)
  • Background – Tell us a little about your past.
  • Personality – And tell us what you’re like! Seriously, though, this is the most important part. You don’t want to be stuck with an uninteresting character, now, do you?
  • Other – Anything else you feel you ought to add.

I'm thinking about this, but I have an RP limit for myself. I think I might bump my limit up to 4 RP's. Just don't tell Fauxlosophe, okay?

Give me some time, I'll have sheet up either in a hour or two, or tomorrow.

'EY KIRI.

LE'S DO DIS.

  • Name – Siorai Dleacht
  • Gender – A laaady
  • Age – That's not a question you ask a woman!
  • Race – Fairy.
  • Appearance – As many fairies are wont to be, Sioari is quite lovely to look at. With a most angular bone structure and piercing amber eyes, however, her looks are also very sharp. It is framed by brown curly hair and a wry smile. Most of her body is quite dainty, another feature of your garden variety fairies, but she is frighteningly tall for a fairy. Almost six feet, which makes her very much so an oddball. Like any fairy worth their salt, she has a pair of wings on her back. Moth wings, which is distressing, but at least it isn't something like a fly or worse. Being of the mindset that a good appearance is the best first impression, she is normally done up in light make-up as put by magic. One of the few times she allows herself to use magic for herself.
  • Equipment – To help her job as a fairy godmother, Siorai is rarely without her trusty magic wand. With it, her powers are amplified to work in more specific ways than the usual generic spells of her kind. Other than that, she carries a satchel that generally contains things to help her in the business of "making dreams come true." Mostly her business card, a list of her contacts, and of course her reading glasses of true sight. One must always be prepared to see the invisible print of a contract if one wants to stay an alive fairy godmother.
  • Skills – Other than generic flight that has been gifted to her kind, Siorai is a practical time bomb of magic. Without her magic wand, however, the magic is very vague and generally involves destruction or extreme consequences. By taking up the magic wand, however, a fairy must bind themselves to the fairy godmother business. While their magic is now quite specific, it cannot be used for any purposes save for themselves. A few things here and there are allowed for necessity, but the base line is clear - help others, not yourself.
  • Background – Siorai was never too interested in the usual malevolent hijinks of her kind, generally finding herself in situations where she helped humans...often from other fairies. For the longest time she lived in the Darkest Forest nearby the usual fairy ring, often times undoing the trouble her kin made. It was at some point in her life that a deal was made between fairies and humans, to amplify and help each other. The business of fairy godmothering, or godfathering if you prefer, which was considered a win-win deal. Fairies got more power by the wands made by the humans, and humans got their very own personal helpers. Siorai leapt onto the chance and became one of the most eager and prolific fairy godmothers of the business, helping princesses, knights, and peasants everywhere in their quest for a dream come true. But...times have been tough. Siorai's current client has decided that he no longer needs her and she has become unemployed. What is she doing at the Royal Palace, you ask? Looking for a job.
  • Personality - Siorai is perhaps the very personification of the fairy godmother. She is dedicated to the business and has lived her entire life dedicated to helping others, even before fairy godmothering even existed. Some fairies call her selfless and a true hero, others say she's a sell-out and a walking door mat. Whatever the case, she is resourceful, diligent, and always optimistic about granting wishes. A businesswoman and a gentlewoman, Miss. Dleacht wouldn't know what to do without her job...which is why she's so distressed right now. Perhaps she is too much of a workaholic...
  • Other – She's secretly a bottle fairy when depressed. That's about it.

Just try not to let the fairy godmother magic become overpowered, OK? I know you're a good R Per, so I'm confident you can keep things within a reasonable limit. smile

This character started as joke, but I had another character that started as a joke become seriously awesome, so let's try here...

  • Name: Admiral Loser.*
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 27
  • Race: Technically half-Neko, half-Human. It doesn't really show though.
  • Appearance: About five and a half feet tall, caucasian with short and messy bright red hair. An average looking build that's stronger than you'd think, but not by terribly much. He wears plain clothes, the pants especially being somewhat ragged with a few patches. The exception is his shoes, which look normal but are actually of an extremely high quality and comfort.
  • Equipment: Besides his clothes? A slightly fancy sabre, that still works just fine for actual sword use.
  • Skills: Moderate sword skill as one would expect from a knight; none of that fancy samurai stuff, unfortunately. A bare-handed fighting style he apparently taught himself; it centers around trying to imitate moves from popular stories, even the ones that are impossible to actually do without magic, which he doesn't have. Also, really good at thinking calmly in stressful situations.*
  • Background: Admiral was actually born in Cyprilion, but moved to a country far away when he was a teenager. The country was a land-locked kingdom apparently populated solely by idiots. Somehow they got the idea that they should have a navy, and Admiral was appointed Admiral on the condition that he change his name to "Admiral". Why he changed his last name to Loser is his own business. The navy was disbanded just a few hours after it was formed, and Admiral was exiled from the kingdom along with the crew of his flagship that had yet to be built. A year or so after returning to Cyprilion, Admiral got a sudden flash of inspiration from a dream. From that inspiration he wrote a book that detailed new and more efficient methods of creating potions. He then promptly forgot most of that information anyway, but through selling the book and setting up business deals Admiral became super-rich.
  • Personality: Really, really laid back, and believes in being a nice person in general. Despite currently being rich enough to buy his own palace and fully staff it for decades, Admiral lives almost like a hobo; just moving from inn to inn to whatever random household was willing to put up with him; all the while drinking cheap ale while reading or listening to stories, which is his hobby. His reason apparently being that he just doesn't care about whether he lives in luxury or not. The exception being his shoes, which he was willing to pay a ridiculous sum for just to have the most comfortable shoes money could buy.
  • Other: Please have a good reason to suddenly suspect he's half-Neko, because he pretty much looks and sounds like any other human on the outside.

  • Name: Jester Mattis
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 20
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: Jester is six feet tall, tan skinned with his hair drawn back into a messy ponytail. He is toned, but not to the point of being muscular. He wears light armor, mostly leather baring his boots and a light metal gauntlet on his right arm, with his left arm being encased in heavy plate armor. Also his left arm is always hanging limp and useless at his side. More on that in a minute.
  • Equipment: His longsword, a talking blade called The Blade Known As Tornado. It's also his many-times-great grandmother, but we'll be talking about that momentarily.
  • Skills: Along side his trained swordplay, he also wields moderate spell slinging skills, mostly dealing with wind manipulation, a family trait.
  • Background: Jester is a knight of the foreign court of Noverin, sent out to aid Cyprilion in it's (seemingly constant) time of need. Trained in both his family's traditional witchcraft and swordplay from a young age, Jester is considered one of their top young prospects, and is eager to prove himself. When he was still in training, he was attacked by a strange demon. He managed to defeat it, however, in the struggle, the demon managed to steal the soul of his arm. To this day, none of the court magicians or healers have figured out how to fix it, still baffled by the fact arms apparently have souls. Upon the announcement of his assignment to Cyprilion, his family bestowed upon him The Blade Known As Tornado, a sword that contains the centuries old spirit of the family's matriarch, The Woman Known As Tornado. Tornado is still disappointed with her bloodline's inability to name things.
  • Personality: Often relaxed, Jester is still energetic and optimistic about the world. Unable to sit still, he is always looking for something to do. While no one would ever accuse him of being a genius, he has great intuition, and often consults Tornado when he needs advice on something hes not sure about. Jester also has a unusual worldview, believing that everyone is controlled by beings from a world greater than their's. Everyone just dismisses it as delusion, however.
  • Other: Jester will occasionally lean on the fourth wall whenever he is bored.

I suppose I could find the time for a nice, non-emotional stroll through a land of myths and magic. Character sheet, ho!

  • Name – Fazerelli Dubranche Tuliphugger, AKA "Faze the Weird Bard"
  • Gender – Male
  • Age – Let's just say that he's a teenager in elf years
  • Race – Forest Elf
  • Appearance – While not quite as beautiful as the famous elves of legends, Faze is far from being confused with a warthog in terms of appearance. He has long purple hair, usually braided into a gigantic ponytail, but let loose if inconvenient. His build is slender, but far from malnourished, and he's just as tall as an average elf his age should be. As for clothing, Faze prefers to wear a stylish orange shirt and navy blue pants, which he tries his best to keep presentable.
  • Equipment – Faze never forgets his suitcase, which carries a spare and identical set of clothes and the tools to do laundry with. And of course, he always carries his instrument...the tuba.
  • Skills – As a travelling bard, Faze is talented in playing music...though he would willingly admit that few audiences enjoy his instrument of choice. And thanks to his lineage, Faze is also adept when it comes to using natural, forest-grown ailment cures. There's also the odd fact that his proficiency at non-musical or botanical skills seem to be inversely related to his confidence at doing so; expect the best results when he has no clue what he's doing, and the worst when pride gets the better of him.
  • Background – While willing to take over his father's carpentry business some day, Faze was nonetheless awed when a band of travelling minstrels came to his neck of the woods, and was overcome with joy when his parents allowed him to follow them as an apprentice. He was taught to play a deep-sounding instrument in order to balance out the higher pitches of the other musicians, but after money disputes led to the band breaking up, Faze soon learned that few people are interested in tuba solos. And so, with little else to rely on to make a living, he has travelled to Cyprilion in order to woo a princess or noblewomen with mostly his kind heart and charm...though if they like tuba music, all the better for him.
  • Personality – Although he could easily be mistaken for a Spoony Bard, as he tends to follow his heart when it comes to many decisions, Faze has enough common sense to know just when to follow a more logical path. He tries to be an optimist and look at any situation in a positive light, but it has often gone too far and led to Suicidal Overconfidence. More than anything else, Faze just wants a life where he and his loved ones can be at peace.
  • Other – Have I mentioned he's a skinny elf lugging a tuba across the continent? I started with a silly image like that, and next thing I knew, I'd made an entire character at 4 in the morning; not even my peak hours of creativity.

•Name – Iskar Blank (Yes, his last name is "Blank". get over it).

•Gender – Male

•Age – 70

•Race – Shapeshifter.

•Appearance – Tends to settle on the form of a young teenager (touch of my ego here, sorry)

•Equipment – A pendant which helps him focus his will when he shapeshifts.

•Skills – Shapeshifting, obviously. He also has some skill fighting with a sword, although he rarely needs to resort to using one.

•Background – Iskar is young (for a shapeshifter) and left his training early to see the world. He had few friends among his tribe and was always poking his nose (when he had one; shapeshifter, remember tongue) where he shouldn't. This was partially why he ran away.

•Personality – Iskar is intellegent and serious most of the time. He occasionaly lets his guard down and this is when his bright, albeit often quirky, humour shows. He is intensely loyal when he makes friends, but otherwise he tends to be mistrustful.

•Other – I should probably mention some of the effects I thought up for his powers; When shapeshifting he can change his size, but this will drain his energy (or, if he becomes smaller, increase it) so turning into a humungous giant would leave him powerless until he had time to replenish his strength.

That should do it... unless Kiri says no.
