Don't get too forward with the character stuff.

We still need to sort out the universe before we get into the nitty gritty of who's playing what role.

I'm totally fine with lasers and stuff, just... I don't know... it seems more fitting if they're exotic and alien, you know? That could just be me, but it feels like it fits better.

FTL is one of those things that does not need to be hard at all and still be believable.

Devices that destroy reality aren't. With that sort of set-up, you could skip the sun thing entirely and just smash the entire universe together like an aluminium sheet.

We already thought of provisions for a superweapon in the setting, though I was under the impression it was closer to the Death Star than the Reality Bomb.

[up][up]I wasn't adverse at all to that idea. If my badguy's main weapon has to be alien based for it to be a railgun, I'm OK with that.

That sounds fair, might as well get a good base for it. With that said, how would anyone feel about the 'spaceport' idea for the universe? It's space, and there are planets, but there are also space stations that offer food, refueling, docking, meeting points, socialising and shopping, for example?

I know we were talking about physics and such but I'm just not the type of guy to think about the science behind it.

I vote in favour of space stations.

Seems good!

And I don't wanna restrict anybody from playing characters they wanna play, it's just... y'know... if someone's off doing something totally unrelated to this or that, it's... almost superfluous.

The whole drive behind this was to get a joint narrative type thing going. Almost like collaberating on, I don't know, the first Season of a show, you know? Central cast, driving plot, arcs. That kinda thing. There's not much of that on here, and it'd be great to come up with something that people outside of the RP could actually read and enjoy.

Magnetic acceleration weapons dont have to be alien in origin. you can make a coilgun rifle in your garage.

@Diamonnes To be honest, I really think there's some Arbitrary Skepticism going on here.

'Aliens exist and interstellar travel is as common as driving a car' but you're not happy with a bomb that destroys the universe?

Ok uhm...

Railguns are totally fine. I'd imagine they'd see a lot of use as ship weapons and as sniper platforms.

Universe destroying weapon could also be fine if we go with the whole "Ancient Civilization leaving mysterious tech behind" thing. That also handily explains why no one's used one already, 'cause if they could still be produced, someone probably woulda.

BDP: First rule of Willing Suspension of Disbelief: You can do the impossible, but you can't do the implausible. Building a machine to string together all the stars in the universe would require several hundred times the resources and time required to simply nuke every chunk of rock capable of supporting life from orbit.

Yeah... I... kind of agree. With the Sue thing. And I mean no offence, so I'm sorry 'bout that.

I think we've gotta make sure our characters are good and fleshed out. Interesting to ourselves and other people. Adds to the appeal, and makes the entire thing that much more satisfying.

[up][up]If it helps, the original bomb was not built by humans but by a space computer that knew almost everything. It's not human design. Also, nukes can be stopped, and places can be rebuilt. They do not wipe out everything, either, just turn things into wastelands.

Just because he knows the location of a weapon that can destroy the universe doesn't mean... well, anything really. He's just a guy who wants to destroy the universe, armed with a railgun. That's all. I'm sorry for this slight derail, so more onto the space stations, for those of us who doesn't want t handle physics (Lol).

I've got a few ideas about space stations, such as ones that just float in space, also ones that are like normal cities built on rocks floating in space. Anyone else got ideas?

I can think of literally twenty different ways to destroy the universe with slipsace tech alone more efficient than linking suns together off the top of my head. The whole concept honestly seems rather cheesy and not at all realistic; not in the "scientifically forseeable" way of realistic, but rather the "this is conceivable as a possible course of action" realistic.

As I said, don't rush into anything.

We need to work out the foundations before we lay the bricks.

Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas in terms of that?

Like, what year is it? How new is humanity to the intergalactic scene? What's the war about? Who's it being fought with?

I've got a few ideas, but I really don't wanna step on any toes if anybody else does.

I believe someone mentioned earlier that it's a Cold War. Well, you know, I'm not going to force this on anyone, but here is my idea for the questions posed by Habberdash. Just ideas.

The year, we can cheat a bit and say it's 5032 FK rather than using '2600 AD'. I mean, it's space, so not everyone will be using 'AD'. It gives us a timepoint for people to go 'Five years so and so did this' etc. As for humanity being new, I think it would be best if they've been doing space travel for a while now. It's part of every day life to zip off to Alpha 32, buy some groceries, and zip back. Maybe drop off at Alpha 63 and play at the casinos there.

Basically, everyone is comfortable with it.

My suggestions:

Like, what year is it?

Since there are multiple civilisations there would likely be an intergalactic callendar; the oldest space-faring race colonising their first planet will be marked as year 1 GR (Galactic Reckoning) or whatever.

How new is humanity to the intergalactic scene?

Roughly five generations, so that there will be enough time for everyone to be used to space travel, and children born aboard spacecraft isn't a rare occurence anymore.

What's the war about?

A system of planet-sized fully mobile ships armed to the teeth with precursor weaponry, all controlled by a central unit the rough size of Sol (the sun) which was the home "world" of the ancient precursor race and contains enough technology and archived knowledge to jump anyone that finds it forwards several millenia; they'd effectively become gods after reverse-engineering everything. The precise details of said hub are unknown, but there are allusions to it in the writings/messages of the precursors uncovered and translated by current civilisations.

Who's it being fought with?''

Everyone. Every species wants to get to the tech first. Nominally, most are planning to share it, and there's an "alliance" between most of the species, but the truth is that beneath the facade of friendliness there's an arms race being kept in the shadows, away from the eye of the general public(s).

Or the Protoculture!

Hmmm... But yeah, the discovery of a precursor stash mobilizing everyone to take action makes sense. And I'm with Diamonnes on the basically everything in has last post. As to what the other species out there actually are, I guess we can work something out, whether they just be expies of other fictional alien races or something a little more original.

I'm at work so not much I can do (and like I said, our ship design will have to wait until friday, sorry), but I'm assuming since this is a Space Opera, we both have the typical Space Navy fleet deal, and the 'slow space' close-range fights instead of the light-seconds distant deal?
