Hmmm... I'm somewhat interested in this, but I already have a few projects that I need to attend to already. But still...
If I could make room for this, I'd probably prefer to try something original, but I'd be fine with any fandom that I could easily assimilate information for (or even better, one that I was already part of, ahah, but we'll see). One question that comes to mind immediately, though: Space opera needs villains, right? Would the villains be NP Cs, or would they be, like, another PC faction? I'd be interested in trying out a space opera villain if you went with the latter, ahah~ But, uh, yeah. >.>
Woo hoo! Interest!
And yeah, I agree with you. Battles against other players are so much more fun than just... floods of NP Cs. Doesn't mean half as much. Multiple factions are a good way to go.
Does anybody have any suggestions or... general... things they'd like to see? Or want to do?
I mean, myself, I'd love if this turned out edging into "collaberative fiction" more than just "R Ping." Keep it well plotted, but still character driven to a point. Which sounds kinda pretentious! But hopefully you guys get what I mean. :P
ALSO. Yes. Villains. Definitely PC controlled. I'd like if each side had a "main cast" type of thing. "Regulars" if you like. Gives it focus, but there's still stuff going on around them to make it clear that it's one part of the world, rather than they're literally the only game in town.

Oh, excellent~ I'm tempted to just throw caution to the wind and try and run with this now, possibly as some kind of (wannabe?) Galactic Conqueror. Or at least someone working for one. Hmmm... Ooh, this will be most fun indeed, eheheh~
Although it's probably best to actually plan out at least some kind of setting first before I plunge headfirst into this, ahah. >.> But, uh, we'll see, we'll see~
Indeed.
Plotting out a general framework is the best approach.
I kinda support the idea of using Halo as a basis. It's fairly user friendly in that the UNSC is kind of... similar to modern day stuff. People coming in with no knowledge of it won't have to play a lot of catch up learning this and that.
That said, the situation for humanity and maybe some of the Forerunner stuff'd probably be the only things we'd keep in that set up. The Convenant makes it too "been there, done that."
Anybody else have any ideas or suggestions? Totally feel free to tell me if I'm talking shit. :P
Oh, um, Halo, huh.
...Uh... I could always try and figure something out, I guess...
(I've, uh, never really been a fan of the series. Like, at all. >.> Sorry. >.< But I'd be willing to at least try it out if everyone else is fine with it. Just, uh, if I end up making up stuff about the setting out of wholecloth, then, uh... Gaaah sorry, I'm being selfcentered here. Uh... Sorry. >.< I'm willing to run with anything really, if everyone else is, even if it is something I usually don't like.)
While Halo is indeed awesome, because the UNSC is so close to modern day stuff it could get pretty limiting on what we want to do.
We could use Halo as a launchpad to create something original?
How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?To be honest, when I think of "space opera", the first things that really jump to mind are, uh, stuff like Star Wars (the original trilogy, at the very least), Space Battleship Yamato, Flash Gordon... Stuff like that. >.> Um... Yeah.
I do agree with SOCR that something that's too close to modern day stuff can be a bit limiting to the whole thing, and that using something as a base to build something more original off of sounds like a pretty neat idea.
I vote using Halo and Battle Tech as the basis.
Mostly because I'm a huge fan of both, but also because they give us a very good look at some high-tech but not-too-high-tech stuff, a wide range of applications, and huge Extended Universe material that we can pick and choose from to include in our semi-original setting.
How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?Ooh, I like the Battle Tech idea~ Mostly because it means mecha, but it looks like it could be pretty interesting.
I'm guessing that the general tech level would probably be up to at least some level of FTL travel, right? I mean, it is "space" opera, after all, so I'm kind of assuming that the action's, uh, probably going to be spread across a few galaxies, and we'll all (hopefully) get to see lots of different worlds out there, ahah~
I don't know much about Battle Tech, but I do like what you're going for. High tech, but not too much so.
Space Opera does totally evoke the old serials to me, too, but somehow I don't think Ray Gun Gothic has the same appeal as... harder sci fi? I love both kinds myself, but I'm not sure if it'd have the biggest draw. And drawing is what we wanna do here.
Having it all over the place sounds good to me. If we're going with the "Quest" idea, then it makes sense to have a Galaxy-trotting thing.
Mostly space-based or ground-based?
Want to know what kind of pilot I'd be making X3
Also, definitely needs Artificial Intelligence.
How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?Mini-Mecha, I was more thinking.
I guess we'd have to figure out a mode of travel first, then. I mean we could have our own ship, or are we hitching rides on public transit?
How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?I'd... Personally lean towards more space based, but I wouldn't be adverse to some ground based stuff.
And mechs go with anything, really. >.> It's something I've learned over the years. You can take almost any plot, dump mecha in it and they won't seem too out of place. Of course, there's always the few minor exceptions, but other than those... Eheh~
Space battleships~! Or, uh, cruise ships or something? Hmmm...

I think the easiest template to follow - and the best way to introduce this whole thing - is some sort of... McGuffin race.
So maybe such and such ship is tasked with tracking down and acquiring such and such artifact before so and so can get their hands on it.
It's a little tried, I know, but it's a good skeleton to work with.
I mean, the hope is that this is gonna be "Season 1", so we can build on it. Run it as an intro to the characters and the universe.
Hmmm, right... It'd have to be a MacGuffin everyone would have some interest in getting their hands on, though. Possibly something very valuable, possibly rumoured to be some kind of superweapon (whether it actually is one or not is another matter entirely), something the government/federation/whatever would pay out of the nose to get their hands on? Hmmm...
I love worldbuilding, but I try to stay away from other scifi worlds because my own personal story influences my input; mostly I save it for various fantasy stuff to keep them separated.
That being said I would be ecstatic if I could design the ship and borrow some of my personal concepts for it, and for AI. With permission. (Not from myself, as that's a given but... you have the idea)

I've been checking around for a while, but, unfortunately, I've yet to find an RP that quite fits the "space opera" genre.
There's the Mass Effect Rp - which is awesome by the way - but nooot much else beyond that.
When I think of Space Opera, I think of... epic plots. Not in the Internet use of the word. I mean, larger than life. Quests, if you like. Mythic stuff.
So that's what I'm checking out here. I wanna see if anybody is gamed for a plot-focused, tight, streamlined and action packed Space Opera type Rp. Competing groups, multiple PO Vs. That kinda thing.
I'm not even sure if I should run this thing, I'm sure somebody would do it waaaay better than I could, but I just wanted to put the idea out there. See if it got any nibbles.
Also? Probably should be fandom based, for ease of adaption and stuff. It's easier to build on stuff that's already there than make something new entirely. I was thinking Halo could be a great skeleton to build on, but I'm open to suggestions.
So yeah.
... carry on!
