I'd think that earth ponies might be even more hermetic in nature, given how subtle it is.

-researches-

Ah, I see. I had the wrong idea of what Hermetic magic is, my mistake. Yeah, that works much better with Earth Ponies - The use of alchemy and natural sources of power, and the concept of As Above so Below fits them perfectly - that affecting oneself could, in turn, affect the world around you.

Pegasi would be more Ritual Magic, or perhaps Magic Dance. Perhaps both at once. Really, the only way I can imagine their magic that we see in show(Performing physical actions to result in a supernatural effect; directly affecting small or intangible forces) is using ever more complex movements or rituals to create a small effect that would spiral outwards into something larger.

Pegasi are the best rain dancers.

[up][up]That's definitely a better fit, given how their weather manipulation works.

Come to think of it, they could probably do a fair bit with motion-based magic. Runecasting for divination, and that sort of thing. I'd have to look into more forms of magic that are based around some kind of motion, but it's an interesting idea.

Heh. Maybe they make specific devices and set them off while magically charged to do things they can't. Rube Goldberg magic rituals.

Maybe some of 'em carry clouds with them so they can hurl lightning bolts.

They probably wouldn't really need it. I mean, if they can ionize the cloud they can probably ionize air. They might just need a surface to start the lightning off of so they don't burn themselves with it.

Like General Storm's boots.

Yes. General Storm's boots are a similar idea. Though with that the idea is "clang 'em metal things together, get spark. Spark equals lightning or something."

I still contemplate the idea of an alternate universe where Unicorns practice hermetic magic for major spells, not because magic has to work that way, but because reciting incantations is an easy mnemonic.

I imagined pegasi magic being the type to involve diplomacy with spirits rather than magical coercion. Only they can hear spirits and make themselves heard. Those with keen "ears" and loud "voices" are particularly gifted, able to commune with the smallest things and hope to simply command the others respectively.

But... I don't think we've ever seen unicorns using incantations and the like except for, like... twice?

There were the two readings of the "Magical Mystery Cure" spell....

looking through the list, I'm really surprised that FOE: Pink Eyes and Mendacity both only have the single vote...

I mean, admittedly, more than a few of the fics I nominated I knew that I was likely the only here who had read them, but I could have sworn that those two at least were fairly well known/liked around here.

I don't read any Fallout: Equestria anything. I'd rather just play a Fallout game. People keep telling me good things about Mendacity, but I never got around to it, partly cuz it's super long.

You're hardly the only person to be the only recommender of a given fic, anyway wink

[up]and didn't you really like Awakening, too? or am I thinking of someone else? I know someone else here really liked Awakening.

People keep telling me good things about Mendacity, but I never got around to it, partly cuz it's super long.

>little under 75k words
>super long

wat tongue

A story isn't "super long" until 150-200k words, imo.

100k is just regular "long".

+250k is "so long that I'm never going to read it"

Yeah it's not really that long, just, medium. And it is amazing. Few ehhh parts but not many, and overall, just a really really amazing lok at changelings and does a great job at making them Fey.

Awakening, yeah it was good buuuut, a lot of it's greatness comes from the promises of a bigger story. That it's just the start of things, and though the sequel is out, it's still just part of the larger tail and now the author is talking about not knowing if/when he'll write more and actually finish the big story so.....

[up]he was pretty clear in that blog post that he does, atm at least, still intend to finish it. he just might be shifting priorities and doing something else for a bit.

which, admittedly, for most fanfic authors might as well be the same as saying "It will never be finished". But solicitizen seems to be a cut above the rest when it comes to dedication and forward planning.
