I thought the idea was to keep the magic kind of low-key, something that only the wealthiest and most powerful people of the realm have ever seen. It seems rather counter intuitive to have fairies with natural magic abilities that can freely interbreed with humans, since that would made magic much less rare.

Maybe, maybe not; i think the general idea is that fae and their descendants should also be exceedingly rare in the human realm. Fae come and go, but generally don't stay for long, and if they take human thralls or lovers they probably drag them along when they leave. There may be known places to enter the fae realms, but it probably isn't a good idea to do so most of the time. The rare fae-blooded living in the human realm who displayed magical abilities (and wasn't lynched for it) might swiftly be scooped up by a lord or king and sequestered away for their personal use, just like any other 'magical artifact.' Of course, as a coincidental grouping of exceptional or at least interesting people, the abilities and resources available to the player characters would likely not be representative of the population as a whole. This could be a curse as well as a boon, because of the aforementioned attention they might attract if they go about their business in too much of an attention-getting way.

I revamped my character from page 1. I like him a lot better and I think he fits the RP better. Any critiques/comments/questions are appreciated.

  • Name: Zach Aisling (pronounced "Eyes-ling")
  • Race/Species: Fae-Blooded (Worgen)
  • Age: 20
  • Nationality: Generican
  • Appearance: In human form, Zach appears to be an average young man. He’s a little over six feet tall with black hair that comes down past his ears, and tanned skin. His eyes set him apart from ordinary humans, however as they are gold in color. He is more fit that your average militiaman, but he is by no means massive. His comrades would describe him as being “lean and kind of girlish-looking.” His worgen form is essentially a humanoid wolf. He grows a foot taller and his arms lengthen. He also gains more muscle mass.
  • Personality: Zach is normally a friendly, upstanding, young citizen. He’s the kind of person that if he lived in our world, he would help old ladies cross the street and help get kittens out of trees. He loves playing games with children, specifically, "Hide-And-Seek." He typically won’t fight unless he has no other choice, but he can more than hold his own in a no-holds-barred tavern brawl. He sees everyone who doesn’t outright try to make him miserable as a friend and he would step up to their defense in a heartbeat if he had to. Due to living with the town’s head religious authority, he is deeply religious and will say a short prayer before doing most anything. His personal deity is “Gevaudan: Lord of The Hunt, The Woodsman, The Ravager."
  • History: Twenty years ago, in a small town on the outskirts of Generica, a beaten and bloodied woman arrived, carrying a baby boy in her arms. Her last words to the townspeople were, “My baby… Please...” She died moments later.
This is all Zach knows of his real parents.
The town's religious leader (a woman named Meryl Aisling), knowing that the boy was obviously Fae-Blooded, took him in a raised him as her own. She raised him as a human, leaving him in the dark as to his true heritage. She taught him to resist and suppress his “more feral” urges, hence the reason he comes across as a “goody-two-shoes.” He eventually joined the town’s militia for the sole purpose of protecting his friends and loved ones. During a patrol with a couple of his fellows the group was attacked by a small tribe of bandits. Zach received a grievous wound and on death’s doorstep, his feral nature came through. He transformed and killed everyone around him, including the militiamen in his own party, then blacked out. When he came to, he found himself at his mother’s residence wrapped in bandages. It seemed that no one knew what had happened. The townspeople theorized that both groups of people were attacked by some sort of monster and that Zach was the only survivor; at least, that’s what Meryl told them all…
That night, she revealed to Zach that she had known that he had Worgen blood and that she obviously failed to take every necessary precaution to make sure that “that side” of his nature would never come out. “I have a plan, however,” she informed him. “This night, while everyone is asleep, you will leave the town, your old life, behind. Go wherever Gevaudan leads you. I will tell the people that you left in search of the monster.” She provided him with enough supplies to last a few days. “Go now. Our time is short. May The Woodsman protect you and guide your steps, my Son…”
He travels the land, trying to stay out of trouble. He makes a living as a mercenary of sorts, performing odd jobs or whatever else is needed of him at the moment.
  • Clothing/Armor: He wears a simple set of studded leather armor overtop a peasant’s shirt and breeches. He carries a pack on his back with all of his supplies as well as a short sword on his belt, and a small, wooden charm around his neck. The charm is a simple piece of tree bark with an image of Gevaudan (A wolf with human hands and feet) on it. He holds it tightly when he prays.
  • Abilities:
    • Worgen Form: He tries to avoid using his worgen form unless he absolutely has to. (i.e. He is near death.) In his worgen form, he becomes berserk and doesn’t listen to reason. The best thing to do is stay out of his way, or find an effective way to subdue him. He cannot change back into a human voluntarily. The worgen form eventually tires and he blacks out. Contrary to popular belief, the phases of the moon have no effect on his ability to transform.
    • Worgen Blooded: In his human form, he is stronger, faster and has more heightened senses than the average person. This makes him an excellent hunter.
    • "Magic Scent": He can identify people by their scent, once it registers with him. It's not so much a smell per se, as an innate "detection skill." Different people smell like different things to him and they don't necessarily smell like something they spend a lot of time around. For instance, his mother, Meryl, smells to him like lavender even though she doesn't ever use it in her day-to-day ceremonies.
    • Healing Factor: Because of his Worgen Blood, he heals faster than most humans. It’s not instantaneous and if he receives a wound that’s lethal to a “normal” human, he will also die.
    • Mundane Skills: He is skilled with both a sword and a bow. He knows some fundamentals of hand-to-hand combat.

Mao has departed for the 4th of July weekend but she asked me to start gathering info about posting availability. At the moment, it's looking like Mao will be accepting around four players for this game, and the preferred format will be longer multi-paragraph posts.

Anyone who hasn't posted a character, don't worry: nobody who has posted a character has been formally accepted yet (myself included). Part of of the selection process will of course be how well the character works with the group, setting and tone of the game, but the way posting times match up might also be a factor.

Mao is normally able to post and respond on the weekdays, between 7:00AM and 12:00PM, Pacific Standard Time. She'd like to know when other interested players would be able to post and respond, and approximately how many times a week you'd most likely be able to post.

To start with myself: i can probably manage to post at least once a day, including weekends, and more often if other players are available and online to interact with. I'm most likely to be around from 9:00AM-2:00PM PST on weekdays, and at varying times on the weekend.

Alright, I am planning on writing up a character (hopefully it won't take too long, as I have an idea in my head at the moment), so hopefully I can work this out. Also, GMT, generally on all night unless I happen to be really tired for some reason.

...Anyways, back to the grind...

I'm usually on during the week from 9:00am to 4:30pm Eastern Standard Time (United States). I can also be available from 10:00pm to midnight on weekdays as well.

I occasionally post on Saturdays, depending on how busy I am. (between noon and 5:00pm) Sunday is my day off from being online.

I have a character in mind, too, I just wanted to wait till the concept becomes a little more clear before I put it into words. If the thread is active, I really have no problem to post at least once a day.

I'm on around 10 am to 10 pm eastern standard, but I might post till 2am since sometimes I use my Ipod to stay up to date and post although it takes quite a bit of time to type.

Edit: BTW I will be posting my character soon since it appears that the general outline of the rp is complete, although we have wait till Mao gives the green light.

It might be useful for folks who have a general idea but not a full character yet to summarize their character concepts in one or two paragraphs and post them here to sort of 'sell' the idea. That way we can discuss how it would work with the setting and such, since much has been left purposefully vague.

Yeah, I'd do that, but knowing me by the time I finish writing up the idea in my head it'll end up baring only the slightest resemblence to the original idea. >.< It happens to me all the time, and it can be kind of annoying sometimes (of course, sometimes it ends up working better than I ever expected, but...). I think the only thing I can really say that's likely to stick is that she's either a princess who's run away from the throne and is trying to hide as a mercenary swordswoman, or a deluded peasant girl who thinks she's a princess who's run away from the throne and is trying to hide as a mercenary swordswoman. Hell, the even with a brief synopsis like that large parts are probably likely to fall off it (I'm already starting to think that I can do better than the "mercenary swordswoman" bit, for one thing). The only thing I really want to keep about the ideas I have right now is that they'd be a human who doesn't have a single magical bone in their body and resorts to close quarter combat more often than not.

Ugh... My mind works weird, so... Expect something, I guess. Even if the above all turns out to be Blatant Lies in the end. >.>

Well I have an idea for a character but I don't know in which time period of her life to cast her.

She would be a human without a single drop of fairy or magical blood on her... though she makes up for this be being incredibly athletic, having good reflexes and being a great shot with a bow. Now while she isn't magical in any way, she would have a little half sister who is. My character wouldn't know much more than anyone about fairies or the magical, she just knows that her little sister is a little different than most people and because of that they have been treated badly for about ever. Since she was little she had to fend off for herself and her sister and so she learned how to handle trouble.

However, once a local Lord took notice of her little sister as a potential source of magic the big sister had to pack things up and run out of town, taking her little sister with her in search of a fabled place where her sister would be safe among her own kind.

Now, I could introduce my character in the beginning of that journey, young and a little inexpert and carrying her little, weak sister around with her... or I could introduce her after she succeeded in getting her little sister to the village of half-fae.

Not that she ever saw what's inside or where it is located. Since she's just human she was never allowed to glance at it or one of it's inhabitants. She was left lost in some wild woods, with the reassurance in her mind that her sister was finally safe. If I present her in this period, she would be a young woman, much more experienced and traveling the world. Though of course, she would have a weakness for all of the 'strange' children she might find in her travels.

That... is an unusual, though not unheard-of idea - though if you chose to play with the younger sister still around, the character would eventually be forced to ask herself the question, "Why the hell am I hanging around with these nut-jobs and not trying to find somewhere safe to hide?"

As the Main Characters, things are going to be happening to or around the P Cs, and a lot of those things will probably be unpleasant. Unless one of the initial goals of the group became, 'Find somewhere safe to leave the kid,' the character would constantly be faced with the question of whether it's better to stay with these trouble magnets or strike it out on her own.

This might be a desirable sort of tension, or it might not. It would also be a question of whether the other characters could condone having a kid around, and both questions might hinge heavily on just how competent the character is at keeping both herself and her sister alive.

Sorry about what I said earlier. These days, it seems I have wild mood swings.

I will just tone down his influence to a son of a noble who recently got into bigger political power, and began taking over said Kingdom which previously did all that to make Dark Chains. Which are limited in number, only used by the villain, his son, and the top generals. But a powerful enough holy weapon can severely damage a Dark Chain.

[up][up] Hmmm I guess in the end it depends on the kind of story we'll play and on the other characters. If we go for the adventuring route, get rich and powerful and such, then I should probably go with the aged up version... If we get a lot of Fey-blooded characters and the realm ends up being kind of dark and relatively unsafe for the Fey-blooded then maybe I'll go with the sister combo. Maybe the group can have the goal of seeking out the fabled village of the Half-Fae.

Still the little sister, while relatively weak should be able to travel, run and hide. Coupling that with the fact that while the girls are on the run they don't have a good idea of where to go... they might stick with the adventuring party for protection as they seek the village.

I'll have to keep an eye open on the Sign ups, see if I'm picked, see how Mao feels about it and such.

As for how competent the elder sister would be at keeping her safe... well she's mostly a range combatant so she won't go charging into the thick of the battle. Couple that with some good sense, quick feet to make a get away or run to help her little sister and for her to try and find a good place for the little sibling to hide and she could keep her relatively safe most of the time.

My idea was to play a knight, some member of a divine or martial order. He is the son of a minor noble of Generica, but only second, third or even fourth in succession and without a real chance to ever inherit the family title and thus set out to make a name of his own.

Given that he is unimportant son of a rather minor noble though, he had a hard time getting any attention through the usual way, normally pushed aside for the more important members of nobility when it came to glorious task during a time of war. So despite his excellent martial skills he still holds only a minor position within the order.

As it stands, it isn't much, but I am going to wait to see in which direction the setting develops before I make any ending decisions about my character.

To put things into simple terms, these seem to be the character types that have been proposed thus far (with the magical/semi-magical classes at the bottom, just because):

  • Mercenary - Moerin
  • Knight - e X
  • Monk/Ninja? - D Acriznips
  • Archer - daltar
  • Ranger/Berserker - Karl Kadaver
  • Bard - Alhazred 23
  • Dark Knight - Nick The Swing
  • Um... Assassin? Scary Bard? - deathpigeon

It seems likely that, at the very least, a party constructed of any four of these characters would be suitable for a combat-heavy setting full of danger and excitement around every corner... though perhaps slightly less so if the bard is included.

Indeed, but i was referring to the other bard, who does seem to fit into that category rather nicely. I can think of combat applications for some of Finn's abilities, but most of them involve being ready for the fight. She's no Spider Man ^_^;...
