Main Thread

The year is 1873 A.D. the Anglo-Japanese Empire has ruled the old world for Thirty-five years. Queen Victoria still sits on the Western throne, as she has since the union of the two powers, and Emperor Mutsuhito (Meiji) has inherited his father, the founder's, throne. Meanwhile, the German Empire is in its third year of existence, the New Roman Union is entering a time of prosperity, and the Ottoman empire is on the Brink of Civil War.

You are a magician, an adherent of the mystical arts that call upon the forces of creation to bend reality to your will. You are also an adventurer who loves the world of exploration and bounty. It is for those reasons you have come to London, the world’s center of adventurers’ guilds to be a part of the oldest and most storied guild, the Alkahest. Officially recognized by the Imperial Crown, the Alkahest is the best place for an adventurer to work, with the pay being very nice indeed. Adventurers from the world over travel to London with the intention of joining, and you are one of the few who succeed your entry test. You will be able to take missions from people all over the world, and go to the ends of the old world, you may even get a mission from the Crown itself.

In meta-speak, Welcome to the Arcane Imperium. This is a story-based adventuring RP based in a Historical Fantasy (That takes liberties here and there, so history nuts, give it a rest.) There will be statistics in the combat, but for the most part, it should not be too difficult. I will be the GM and handling the story, while Fauxlosophe will handle combat. A quick warning. there is a LOT of setting material here. This is pretty much me making a whole RPG system and setting from scratch, so prepare for a long read.

Now, some ground rules for the setting:

  • Human players only. Humans are the dominant race, just like real life, and Half-Human Hybrids of any sort are non existent in the current era.
  • Self powered flight is impossible. It is possible for there to be enchanted flying objects, (brooms, flying carpets and the like). But humans cannot fly without such an object, and even then, they are limited by not having a pressurized cabin, so keep that in mind.
  • No demon summoning. Summoning demons, (as in true demons, not Earth Spirits, which will be explained), is a rare skill that usually ends up with the summoner being killed, and is universally illegal, because demons are extremely dangerous and extremely hard to control, even if the summoner lives.
  • No explicit sex. Explicitly written sex scenes will result in a ban, no exceptions.
  • Evil characters are more-or-less forbidden. Exceptions are possible, but it is highly unlikely for me to accept them, so be warned.
  • No spotlight stealing. There will be an ongoing plot, and you may have subplots, but any sign of a potential Black Hole Sue will be rejected, and accepted characters who become one will be banned, no exceptions.

Now that the necessary evils are out of the way, here are the basics of the setting.

  • Gender Equality: Mostly equal, women being more generally proficient than men in magic, especially Witchcraft and Summoning has had a strong effect on the position of women in society, however, some countries are either male or female dominated.
  • Science: Chemistry is roughly one hundred years ahead of its time due to the influence of alchemy, periodic elements are well known.
  • Technology: Most technology is powered by a form of magic in one way or another, be it alchemy, or a spirit bound to the object as a power source. (Example, salamanders power trains, alchemically created batteries power electrical torches.)
  • Religion: Christianity is not nearly as widespread. Germanic Paganism is very prevalent, and there are Celtic Pagan communities in France and the British Isles. Shinto is still being practiced in Japan.
  • Gay Rights: In the Anglo-Japanese Empire, Gay Marriage is completely legalised, but not accepted across the board.

Now to write your character, certain factors are important, first is what Power Bloc they come from.

  • Anglo-Japanese Empire: Established in 1838, the Anglo Japanese Empire is the greatest nation of the old world. Ruling many countries outright, and influencing others through its economic power, the saying goes that if your country is independent, it’s only because the Imperators wish it to be.

    • Major Countries:
      • England is the European center of the Empire, and home to the Western Capital, London. England and the surrounding countries form the British Isles. In England, most people are either pursuing and education in sciences, or business affairs. Home to the greatest schools and universities in the Empire, those families who can afford it send their children to school here. If a child is bright enough, the school will grant a scholarship. England’s principle form of Magic is Alchemy. Suiting the scholarly principles of the country, the English are the world leaders in alchemical advances, from fertilizing land to turning lead to gold. Because of this, England produces some of the most advanced technology seen in Europe. In terms of Religion, English are usually Anglican Protestants, but there is the odd Jew, Pagan or Atheist.

      • Japan is the Asian center of the Empire and home to the Eastern Capital, Edo. In Japan, the principle occupations are theology, philosophy and art. A melting pot of faiths from Asia, and recently introduced to Germanic paganism and Christianity because of the opening of its borders, Japan is easily one of the most religious countries in the Empire. However, the single strongest religion is Japan’s own Shinto faith. The connection with nature that Shinto encourages lends itself well to pursuits in art and poetry, so aspiring artists often visit Japan. Japan’s principle form of Magic is Summoning. Due to the incredible faith of the Japanese and their unity with nature, the Japanese are by far the most powerful summoners there are. The ease with which Kannushi and Miko summon spirits is entrancing and exhilarating to witness. Due to this ease of dealing with spirits, Japan also has a form of Witchcraft called Onmyodo. While elements of Onmyodo are used by Kannushi and Miko, it is more common for Japanese to learn summoning.
    • Minor Countries:
      • Ireland
      • Scotland
      • Wales

  • New Roman Union: Established in 1846 as a means of increasing military and Economic strength. The N.R.U. is composed of five countries: Italy, Spain, France Portugal, and Romania. Predominantly catholic, their premier form of Magic is Thaumaturgy.
  • German Empire: A recently established empire formed in January of 1871. The primary countries are Germany and Prussia. Home to Germanic Paganism, the primary form of magic in the German Empire is Witchcraft.
  • Ottoman Empire: The oldest of the Empires, it controls most of the near east, areas of northern Africa and Greece. Its people use both alchemy and/or thaumaturgy.
  • Bantu League: As of 1869, The Anglo-Japnese empire and the Bantu League are in an Alliance, so there has been some exchange of people and Ideas between the two nations. The Bantu League uses basic Alchemy in combination with Elemental summoning as their form of magic.
  • The Kingdom of Abyssinia: An Isolationist Theocracy practicing an off shoot of Christianity which believes the present line are Scions of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. Unforgiving Desert to the East, Mountains to the South, a Powerful Navy and generally lacking enough resources to be worth attacking has insured their Independence and isolation for the foreseeable future. Other strange societies and cults use the isolation of Abyssinia as a means to practice their ways free of prying eyes.
  • Barbary Trade Union: A loose collective of ethnic groups from West Africa. Barbary primarily practices Islam, and uses Thaumaturgy, with some individuals using Alchemy and Witchcraft. Barbary is known for its pirates, who make the waters near the Barbary coast a risky prospect for any merchants in the area.
  • Kalmar Union: A union of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the territories thereof. A teeth-clenched union of military power in place to protect themselves against the Anglo-Japanese Empire and the German Empire. They practice the Nordic form of German Paganism, and perform witchcraft.

Next most important factor is what type of magic your character uses.

  • Alchemy: The magic of transmutation. By far the most precise, and best understood of the forms of Magic, Alchemy is a very precise and demanding science. But the rewards are very concrete. Alchemy is the act of taking matter or energy and changing it from form to another, sometimes at the subatomic level. The simplest act of this is the fertilization of land. In fact, this was the same Alchemy technique used by the Bantu League to propel their growth into the great nation they are today. The most well known is the transmutation of lead to gold, which is a mark of a fully-fledged Alchemist, who can rearrange matter on the subatomic level. While it was once thought that Alchemy could achieve the creation of something called the “Elixir of Life” this is not true, however, Alchemy is responsible for the great medical advances of the past century.
    • Meta: Alchemy is best for those who want to cast lots of weaker spells. Your transmutations are highly specific, and a specialty should be chosen. Specific spells should be written up.

  • Summoning: The magic of calling. Summoning is a less precise, but also well understood form of magic. Summoning is the act of calling a terrestrial spirit to the caster’s aid. Often considered the next step up from witchcraft, Summoning is a very useful skill, as it is more efficient to have a spirit do work for you than to borrow its power as in witchcraft. In Europe, only Pagan priests and priestesses are capable of summoning, but the average Japanese citizen is just as capable, and Kannushi and Miko even more so. Most beginning summoners learn by attempting to summon Brownies or Kodama. The most advanced form of summoning is the summoning of a deity-class spirit.
    • Elemental Summoning: Unique to the Bantu people of Africa, Elemental summoning is the use of a refined metal as a catalyst to summon spirits that bear exaggerated properties of that metal. Bantu often use this in conjunction with Alchemy in order to increase accessibility of metals.
    • Meta: Good for two kinds of people, those who want to stay away from the actions, and those who want to coordinate complex attacks using both caster and summoned beast. Have a list of summons ready, only one spirit can be actively summoned at a time. You have a total of 3 contract points to start with. The more powerful the spirit, the more contract points it takes up. (minor spirit: 1 point, example: fairy, middle class spirit: 2 points example: Tanuki, Greater Spirit: 3 example: minotaur ) Additional contract points may be earned as you gain levels.

  • Witchcraft: The magic of contract. Witchcraft is a primarily Pagan form of magic, though it is not unheard of for more lax Christians to practice it. Witchcraft is performed by contracting with an earth spirit to use their power in the form of magic. For example, if one were to contract with a sylph, one could then use her wind powers at will. It is quicker to cast, and less straining than Summoning, but less efficient with certain exceptions. The people of the Germanic Empire are particularly skilled with this, sometimes even amplifying the power of the spirit they are contracting with. Many beginning witches and warlocks learn by contracting with a pixie. It is considered the epitome of Witchcraft to form a contract with Aradia, the goddess of Magic herself.
    • Meta: Good if you want a wide variety of powerful spells, have a list of contracts and spells for said contracts. You have a total of 5 contract points to start with. The more powerful the spirit, the more contract points it takes up. (minor spirit: 1 point, example: fairy, middle class spirit: 2 points example: Tanuki, Greater Spirit: 3 example: minotaur, Minor deity: 4 points Example: Muses Major Deity: 5 points example: Odin )Additional contract points may be earned as you gain levels.

  • Thaumaturgy: The magic of miracles. Thaumaturgy is a form of magic exclusive to the followers of the Abrahamic religions or other divine religions. Thaumaturgy is performed by praying to divine beings such as saints or angels. By all means similar to Witchcraft, except Thaumaturgists need not form contracts, they simply bequeath a being for their aid. This is less restrictive than Witchcraft, but since the result is dependent upon whether the being deems you worthy, is less reliable, and as such requires a high degree of faith to perform. The Neo-Roman Union are skilled thaumaturgists, as their principle religion is Catholicism, which is more strict than other branches of Christianity, resulting in higher degrees of faith. The first techniques a thaumaturgist learns are often the better known miracles of Christ, in particular walking on water and feeding the class with a small amount of food.
    • Meta: If you want to have a wide variety of powerful spells, this is also a good choice. Have a list of preferred divine beings and typically used spells. Thaumaturgists can also use a spell not on their list, but the chance of the spell succeeding is much lower.

  • Sorcery: Inherent magical gift. Sorcery is by far the most powerful, most rigorous, and most importantly least understood form of magic. Humans are born sorcerers completely at random, but the chance increases as you have more sorcerer ancestors. Sorcery often first manifests itself on the child’s ninth year, usually in an outburst of the magic they are aligned to. Though it is not well understood, there are tomes written by sorcerers recording their findings, despite the random nature of sorcerer birth and the lack of knowledge of its origin, it seems all sorcerers’ magic works the same way, so it is often crucial for young sorcerers to find others from whom to learn. Also, as Sorcery comes from within the caster, using sorcery tires out the user. Using too much magic at once or using too big a spell can seriously injure or even kill the Sorcerer. Sorcerer’s eyes are always some type of strange color or pattern, one that reflects the type of magic that they use. The type of magic that a sorcerer uses is strongly tied to their personality. Furthermore, Sorcerers have the unique capacity to become a god through furthering their craft and cultivating their legend.
    • Meta: Good if you want very powerful spells based in a specific area. Have a specific type of spell set thought up, and make a list of spells based around that, don’t forget your character’s eyes are colored to match their type of sorcery.

Finally stats, I’ll roll them up for you based on your given class of magician.

  • STR (Strength): Physical strength, how strong your character is in terms of muscular ability. Important for characters that fight at close range.
  • END (Endurance): Physical endurance, determines how much of a hit you can take, and in the case of Sorcerers, how many spells you can cast consecutively without being injured.
  • FAI (Faith): How devoutly your character believes in his or her gods. Influences how strong witchcraft, summoning and thaumaturgy are.
  • INT (Intelligence): How book-smart your character is, influences how strong their Alchemy or Sorcery is, (elemental summoners use INT to summon instead of FAI) INT is also used to determine the effectiveness of long range weapons.
  • WIL (Willpower): How strong your character’s will is, determines your character’s resistance to spells.

Thank you for enduring this long. Finally, here is your character sheet, copy, paste, and write away.

link

  • Ethnicity: From what group of people your character descends biologically.
  • Nationality: What Power Bloc your character is from. (It does not have to be the Anglo-Japanese Empire)

  • Personality: Kanoro is a well read, and creative individual who enjoys books. He is well-spoken, and always uses his words to make his points before resorting to action. Kanoro is very proud of his sorcery, and heritage, sometimes in a manner that approaches arrogance. Kanoro is known to hold grudes, and is spiteful towards those he deems unjust.
  • Appearance: Kanoro has very dark skin and black dreadlocked hair. He is tall with a lean, muscular build, and has steel-grey eyes, proof he is a sorcerer. He usually wears a charcoal double-breasted waistcoat over a white dress shirt, with a necktie of a subdued, dark color. When outside, he wears a black frock coat.
  • Backstory: A Sorcerer of Kenyan descent. His father was a soldier in the Bantu Civil War, and died when he was young. His birth mother, a refugee of the war was taken in by an English Librarian by the name of Evangeline Caldwell when Kanoro was an infant, and was raised by the two women. Kanoro went through life rejecting people’s disdain for his dead father, and proud of his father’s fighting for his country. This, combined with his creative spirit manifested in his Sorcery. Now studying Sorcery at the University of London, Kanoro has gone through life with a love of reading both fiction and non-fiction.
  • Magic: Sorcery
    • Spells: Fabrication and spell cancellation
      • Fabricate Weapon: Creates a weapon with sorcery, has a good chance of breaking and dispelling after use.

  • Fighting Style: Fights by fabricating swords to fight with, wielding them either one at a time or two at once. When fighting magic-users, he rejects their magic as a defensive tactic.

Finally, we’re done! Now post your character, I’ll take care of the rest.

  • Name: Yamanaka "Taeko" Yukari
  • Mantra: "Renown is the only goal worth pursuing."
  • Sex: Female
  • Age: 18
  • Ethnicity: Japanese
  • Nationality: Anglo-Japanese Empire
  • Personality: Taeko may be a good person at heart, but if she is, it's rather hard to tell. Taeko's presence is mostly defined by her desire to control everyone and everything around her. In short, Taeko is extremely selfish and controlling. That said, she does show affection and a degree of loyalty to the people she likes, few though they are. Her personality is mostly driven by her desire to become the most powerful sorceress ever. Consequently, while she is quite selfish, she will also do anything to gain greater recognition, making her rather easy to exploit, and also meaning she is not particularly rude.
  • Appearance: Taeko is tall, with asiatic features. Due to her abilities, her black hair is, unusually, quite curly (this may or may not be artificial) and reaches her shoulders in length. Her eyes virtually glow with a crystalline, purple light. Making her somewhat intimidating. She wears a violet kimono with a corset replacing the sash.
  • Backstory: Taeko was raised by parents extremely enthusiastic about her abilities. In fact, too much so. At age 16 she was allowed to set out on her own, during her travels, she slowly came to believe that she was destined to become the most powerful sorceress in history, and eventually ascend to divinity. To this end, she constantly works to make her name widely-known, and to an extent, she has already succeeded.
  • Magic: Taeko is a sorcerer, a telekinetic to be specific.
    • Spells:
      • Push "Ugoku": Taeko's simplest spell is a basic telekinetic push/pull, manifested by the same violet glow all of her powers have.
      • Force Blades "Tsurugi": Exactly what they sound like, Taeko can either make many small ones to throw at an enemy, or one to wield with her hands.
      • Levitation "Tobinasai": Taeko is able to move objects and people about. Either delicately, or by violently throwing them. This does not work on herself, but theoretically she can (and has) used it on carpets, chairs, etc. she was sitting on
      • Energy Beam "Kousen": Essentially the magic equivalent of a laser beam. Powerful, but taxing to use.
      • Telekinetic Pinch "Tsumaru": Taeko causes her foe's muscles to twitch and spasm. Making attacks more difficult to hit her with, and causing pain as well.
  • Fighting Style: Taeko uses magic almost exclusively in combat. But she has been known to conjure up a force sword if melee is required.

  • Push: moves object or opponent. (1d6 to determine distance roll = squares target is pushed away)
  • Force Blades: (3d6 to determine damage. Sword lasts for three turns. Physical)
  • Levitation: (roll d20 for success alone, opponent levitated cannot act if affected, can only attempt to resist the spell. Roll xd4 for damage caused by a thrown object where x is one of the following values. tiny=1 small=2 medium=3 large=4 huge=5)
  • Energy Beam: (roll 1d12 for damage)
&Telekinetic Pinch: (Roll 1d8 for a hit penalty inflicted on enemy, roll 1d8 to determine damage caused)

I was thinking perhaps a healing spell. But I don't know how I'd justify that.

maybe she telekinetically closes her wounds, or something? I'm not sure.....

Or maybe just something that causes muscle spasms in general, instead of something so specific.

Hmmm daltar should you try to join yet another RP?

Lets see... the first idea that comes to mind would only fit under sorcery and since there's only to characters to date and both are sorcerers... I think I better not add to that population. Could also be covered with some kind of demon magic, but that doesn't work in this universe.

Maybe a devout yet kind thaumaturge warrior? Earnest Japanese samurai girl with some summons? Hmmmg... I better think this through a little longer.

Aww, son of a bitch
#15: Jun 23rd 2011 at 8:50:45 PM

•Name:Elliot Briggs.

•Mantra:"Why? 'Cause it's fun!"

•Sex:Male.

•Age:26

•Ethnicity:British.

•Nationality:Anglo-Japanese Empire.

•Personality:Elliot is as capricious and crafty as the beings he venetrates. Well, less so, but still very similar. He honestly doesn't care about what other people think of him or what he does. All Elliot wants to do is have fun, legally or otherwise. He's oddly polite upon first impressions, though that may just be a bit of courtesy before he steals the shirt off your back.

•Apperance:Elliot is tall and thin, almost starved looking. His skin is pale in some places and tan in others. His red hair is greasy and slicked back and his face is covered in freckles. The Egyptian hieroglyph for "jackal' is burned into the back of his right hand. He prefers to wear whatever he can find in his limited traveling wardrobe, usually just a natty brown shirt and pants.

•Backstory:Elliot grew up on the streets of London. Never knew his parents, though he assumed they were nice people. Elliot thrived on petty theft as a child, always stealing just enough to get by. Sometimes he'd get caught. That was were he found out about the Cult of The Common God.

A group of thieves, pickpockets, and cardsharks dedicated to the worship of trickster deities, the Cult practiced Witchcraft to enhance their skills in their respective fields. Jack joined the cult and ran with them for awhile.

He didn't really care about the Cult, no they were just a means to an end. It was the gods they forged contracts with that interested him. Impossible thieves that could steal entire herds of cattle, tricksters that could talk fearsome beasts into traps, all manner of outrageous and capricious beings. Elliot wanted to be like them. He wanted to steal the moon from the sky and to trick a god into his net.

As time past, Elliot lost sight of this goal, though he continued to draw on the tricksters for power. He left the Cult a few years ago to seek his fortune, though he has yet to find it wandering the streets, alleyways, and rooftops of the cities of the world.

•Magic:Witchcraft

  • Spells:Related to stealth or trickery.
    • Prankster's Jaunt: A short distance teleportation spell.
    • Someone Else's Problem:Renders Elliot ivisible for a short period of time. However, he can be seen if you focus hard enough on where he's standing. If Elliot attacks while invisible, the spell ends.
    • Mocking Mask:A shapeshifting spell that only allows Elliot to transform into animals. The larger the animal, the more difficult the spell is to cast.
    • Scott Free:Grants Elliot a chance of escaping from a single attack.
    • Pickpocket:A spell that allows Elliot to steal objects at a distance. However, the act of casting the spell is extremely obvious, the object can be no larger than his fist, and the spell is more difficult the further away the object is.

◦Contracts:Loki.

•Fighting Style:Elliot prefers to avoid combat altogether, escaping using a combination of Prankster's Jaunt and Someone Else's Problem. If he has no other option, he will attempt to use Mocking Mask to shift into a combat-ready animal, like a tiger or a bear.

You have to change what school of magic that is. :>

It should be Witchcraft, where you have thaumaturgy.

It is still incorrect. For the type of magic you have to work, it has to be witchcraft, Thaumaturgy only applies to Rastafarianism, and the Abrahamic Religions (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism) in this setting. Please edit.

Perfect. I really like what you've got here.

I'll roll Elliot's stats in the morning.

Also, since Loki is also a fire god, may I suggest one fire spell so you have multiple combat options?
