To be a deployable unit in SRW, a lot of the "intangible" powers of a mecha have to be excised.

I picked up SRW 30 on a whim, having never touched the series before. Its fantastic. I was trying to more or less balance my main team, with Koji and Gridman leading the pack via favoritism. Then Ryouma joined and suddenly had way more kills than everyone else.

I'm a little disappointed I apparently won't get Shin Getter back.

I like 30. It does a lot to change up the formula, even if difficulty is... well, nonexistent might be a bit strong but it's also not wholly unwarranted. Amuro being stuck in the Nu Gundam seems bizarre, though. We have the Hi-Nu and the HWS for both of them. Why not include them?

For fun (and since I love its color scheme and overall designed) I fully upgraded my MP Nu Gundam and shoved Char in it. Lack of Re-GZ makes me sad, however. Love me some Re-GZ.

My playthrough has been stalled pretty much between a combination of paralyzed by choice (so many missions I could do that I don't do any) and if I'm doing SRW, I'm trying to play Moon Dwellers. Which has its own issues with Loads And Loads Of Characters. I have like... 30 or so characters I barely know and 8 deployment spots. And 3 of them have to be taken for SRX.

So, question.

Does anyone know the controls for Super Robot Wars W? Specifically, how necessary are the shoulder buttons? I ask because my DS' shoulder buttons are borked but given this has an English patch, I might be able to play it.

[up]R+Start rapidly skips dialogue, which is useful if you're on New Game Plus, but otherwise the only thing the shoulder buttons do is scroll through playable units on a map.

Ah, cool.

Decided to just emulate it on my phone rather than dig out my DS. Wow this game feels like J. To the point that I think I'm going to try to finish J rather than play this one for now.

I do like the Valstork. And how it's clearly a Transforming Mecha. If that thing doesn't Macross then I'm going to eat my hat.

So, I was clicking around. Super Robot Wars Advance has a First Installment Wins entry that I find really dubious on a few levels:

  • First Installment Wins: Amongst the GBA Super Robot Wars games, despite being the most archaic (and considered very very difficult even for SRW standards) and having tons of Early-Installment Weirdness, it is by far the most popular of the GBA games, with the originals (both Axel and Lamia) usually first in line in making appearances in other SRW media (the only one that comes close is D)

So... it starts off sounding like an Overly Narrow Superlative, as it's First Installment Wins, not First Installment Specifically On This Platform wins. And I just don't know how true it is? I mean, I'm pretty sure OG and OG 2 are bigger in the general SRW community.

Then the second bit, about D being the next biggest is just surprising to me? Again, overly narrow superlative and all but I don't think D is terribly well-known either. At least, and this is probably a western bias thing, but I just assumed J was bigger than D. This could be wrong and just because J got patched into English and Moon Dwellers got an official English release but... well, I just assumed that being translated also indicated popularity.

I won't disagree with Axel and Lamia being the most popular of the original characters on the GBA lettered games, but I chalk that at least partially due to exposure: Advance had a really short gap before being ported into an OG game.

I dunno, the entry just strikes me as weird.

Anyway, found my Vita copy of X. Gonna give that a play once I finish my playthrough of V.

Triple post, but wanted to highlight a discussion thread here.

Basically, it's weird and inconsistent that some of our pages use expanded titles (e.g. Super Robot Wars Judgment) and we don't even have redirects for the abbreviated versions (e.g. Super Robot Wars J). And for other games, the opposite is true (we have Super Robot Wars V but not Super Robot Wars Voyage).

Given how the expanded titles are, to my knowledge, largely All There in the Manual at best, I'm thinking we should largely be using the abbreviated versions.
