[up]They had a twist similar to that WMG in Quake4. In the second half of that game, your squad's commanding officer is kidnapped by the Strogg and turned into some kind of uber-Tank. He's one of the hardest bosses in the game, and it's the last emotional punch needed to spend the last hour blowing alien cyborgs to Hell. I imagine it'd work similarly in Hero's Duty, probably ending with some grim monologue of what "duty" is and what it means to be a hero.

I think there was at least one other user here who thought of the great idea to have two Cybugs attend the Bad Anon meetings as The Stinger, and talking like normal people and drinking coffee! That would've been HILARIOUS, but would've gone against the established fact that they're not aware they are in a video game and are instead completely feral creatures with no judgment.

I went through and nabbed screenshots of all the cutscenes (and a few other things) from the DS version of the Wreck-It Ralph game.

I've uploaded them all to my Tumblr and made a master list that links to everything here.

Some cutscenes have spoilers and have been marked as such on the master list and on their individual posts.

I also uploaded all the cutsceen screenshots to my Photobucket here. However, the Photobucket set doesn't have spoiler warnings and it uploaded in backwards order.

Also in my Photobucket is the concept art you can unlock. There's nothing spoilery about them and I think they've all been seen before.

^^^^ It's kind of similar to a theory I had about Heroes Duty earlier, that just prior to the final level Calhoun dies and the other fellow soldiers either follow suit or are forced to fall back, leaving the player to take on the final boss alone. The idea that Calhoun herself is the final boss is a pretty cool one too, and does make sense with her backstory and role in the game. It could also be a corrupted remnant of her fiancee.

And another random theory/pseudo-backstory: in the console series that the light gun Heroes Duty games are a spinoff of, Calhoun is a staple character as an everpresent tutorial/guide/ally - basically an Exposition Fairy / walking tutorial / Mission Control that actually does kick ass in addition to being a guide. In the first few games, she is unlockable as a stronger-than-the-others partner soldier at, say, 75% completion and then as a player character with 100%. During the third game, she is taken over by the Cy-Bugs and the series delivers a major Player Punch by forcing the players to kill her as the final boss, but in the game after that she returns as a pseudo-sentient hologram programmed with her personality, which ends up being taken over by the remnant of her still living in the Cy-Bug hive mind during the 100% completion ending.

[up][up]I love how masculine Calhoune looks in those development sketches! At least we have an idea of what the main characters may look if this were hand-drawn!

^^^ Heh, I love Ralph's dialogue in those cutscenes. It's either hilariously bad or hilariously Woobie-esque.

  • Felix: "Wow, I've never cheered for destroying something before."
  • Ralph: "Me neither. Or for anything, actually."

Or:

  • Felix: "Oh my land! Look what they did to your home!"
  • Ralph: "They didn't touch it, actually."

Slightly related to that WMG; Moppet Girl declared Hero's Duty a ripoff after Ralph messed things up. What if his actions caused the game to lose popularity and become unplugged? Also, there's Markowski who was still in the closet.

C'mon, how many times have you heard someone in an arcade say "no fair! The game cheated!"? Nobody really takes that seriously... unfortunately for Moppet Girl.

That girl is pretty funny - her gaming experiences are so hilariously unlucky. I hope she appears in the sequel at a desktop (or a console, or both), with whatever online game she's playing being interrupted by the heroes yet again. It'd be a great running gag.

Also, I'm serious guys: I really think the "Sugar Rush animated series" bit is great idea. I say we spread it around. It'd be the greatest thing if the writers or an executive or something got wind of the idea.

@Mewtwo Warrior: Once again, your collection of links is awesome! grin Looks like Turbo is the movie's Ensemble Dark Horse!

What's with all these "Calhoun dies or turns into a Cybug in her game" Wild Mass Guesses? That would be way too dark for a Disney cartoon! (I'm barely letting them get away with her fiance's death because it was 'programmed' into her which likely means it never actually happened.)

Btw am I the only one who is glad that they made the Game Player character a girl? It breaks the stereotype a little (though they still made her too nerdy-looking.)

How is Moppet Girl too nerdy-looking? Just because she has glasses?

And Calhoun being the final boss of her game is "Too dark for a Disney cartoon?"

What, exactly, makes that worse than King Turbug, for instance?

[up][up]Not just the glasses, her whole general outlook screamed "I suck because I play video games!" At least to me.

And you can't compare what happened to King Candy (though it was pretty dark) to it happening to Calhoun. It would hurt much more.

Disney in general has some pretty dark moments, though.

And even if it is too dark for Disney, it's not too dark for fanfic.

That King Candy looks exactly as I remember him, so they must have done a good job following the 2D art there! [lol]

In the first few games, she is unlockable as a stronger-than-the-others partner soldier at, say, 75% completion and then as a player character with 100%.
Aha, is this based on the real games Disney made, where in the current online version you gain an unlock code for Calhoun as partner a third of the way through the game (and Ralph two-thirds of the way through), while in a newer smartphone mini-game, you actually play as her? (I guess the "Exposition Fairy" part is that you see a picture of her while reading the opening mission statement as text. Yeah, it's nothing too fancy.)

That girl is pretty funny - her gaming experiences are so hilariously unlucky. I hope she appears in the sequel at a desktop (or a console, or both), with whatever online game she's playing being interrupted by the heroes yet again. It'd be a great running gag.
For maximum irony, they should mess up a game of a home port of TurboTime for her.

Dude, Disney films are dark. I mean Turbo is like something out of a Creepypasta with the way he invades other games and corrupts their code.

They should work "Who plays video games in their house?" into a movie, followed by "You mean there are still video arcades out there?"

@Known Unknown - The cutscenes are great because they're just so ridiculous. [lol]

@Sijo - Thanks, I'm so glad you enjoyed them! grin

@Bagof Magic Food - "Who plays video games in their house?" is just about one of my most favorite quotes lately, I think part of it is the way Ralph says it.

-

Out of curiosity, do tropes that apply to the games go with the tropes for the movie? One that comes to mind is that for some reason the second boss is stupidly annoying, especially since the other three bosses (including the final boss!) are fairly straightforward and very easy to beat, while the second boss has all sorts of weird gimmicks tossed in.

That was the boss of Hero's Duty, right? Maybe it was tougher through being well-adapted to its home turf.

... so.

Today I didn't manage to accomplish anything with the character sheet, because my stupid modem chose the worst possible moment to kick the bucket. (I found out I'm addicted to the interwebz, though. Not a good thing, despite the fact that I missed you guys.) Once I came back from my Krav Maga lesson (roughly one hour ago), I could access the internet once again given my dad had another modem and replaced the old one. Then I re-set the connection for my Nintendo 3 DS as well, and Nintendo notified me about a free giveaway level pack for New Super Mario Bros 2; the DLC itself is awesome, because it's a free Nostalgia Level pack - if you assumed I got sidetracked by that... you were right. So, after updating the game's ATFR article, I started writing this post. It's midnight now here in Italy; if I can, I'll start working on Cyril's entry soon enough. Fingers crossed.

So this was my day.

I'm from Piedmont. No relation with Piedmon, mind you!

@Bagof Magic Food - Yep, it was the Hero's Duty one! Hmmm, maybe...

Part of the problem was that the arena was designed strangely. The other boss levels are pretty simple. In the Hero's Duty one, there's three floors to it and you have to climb the ladder with Ralph to get to the other sections.

All the sections have teleporters on each end that take you from one side to the other.

The bottom floor only has two collapsible platforms that do not regenerate and once they're gone, there's an insta-death pit of acid underneath them.

The main boss gimmick is that you have to kill it to unlock broken consoles for Felix to fix. There's two consoles on the second floor and two on the first. Each time you kill it gives you a chance to fix the console. So at the minimum, you have to kill the boss 4 times.

The boss teleports, usually after you whack it a couple of times, and it'll fly out of reach for a bit. It also spawns smaller Cy-Bugs, usually flying ones, but occasionally there'll be some wingless babies. The flying ones get in the way and if they're still around when you go to fix the console, they'll mob you and you won't have a chance to fix it because the boss only stays dead for a short period of time.

The boss bug itself isn't hard, you just punch it and track it down after it teleports. All the fighting is done on the upper floor, which can be problematic if Ralph's low on health, since he's the only one that can climb up there and the baby Cy-Bugs will come in for lunch.

In contrast, all you have to do with the first boss is punch it and avoid its attacks, the third boss you have to break through ice cream to get to the boss and then you punch it and follow it when it teleports to two other nearby sections, and then the final boss you just have go around and take out four sections of it by fixing four things and then having Ralph punch each one. I have no idea why the Hero's Duty one is so bizarrely complicated.

On the plus side, the teleporters and the fact that it teleports just adds to my theory that Aperture Laboratories is the one behind the Tower and the Cy-Bugs. [lol]

Hmm, so you still need pictures of Markowski and Kohut, Alex Sora? There were official portraits of them in the online game, but they're pretty small, and it makes Markowski look like Shrek to me. smile Maybe you can crop a screenshot from an HD copy of that commercial where Markowski holds up a finger in between repetitions of "Ralph", that oughta look all right.
