Well, it worked out nicely for him, didn't it?
Odyssey has become the highest-selling 3D Super Mario game of all time, surpassing Galaxy (which sold 12.7 million, Odyssey sold over 13 million).
Damn! And in just one year.
Even if Mario's accent makes no sense, I like it the way it is. It's a nice sort of Unexplained Accent.
I recall a group of people on the internet wanted to create a Mario fan game called I Mario. The point was to make it antithetical to the cartoony nature of Mario games and create a realistic looking first person shooter. If I recall correctly, Mario, and possibly Luigi, were running from the New York mob and went into the sewers and wound up in the Mushroom Kingdom. It was going to be a recreation of the original Super Mario Bros. with Mario was conscripted to beat back Bowser's invading army. There would be eight worlds, each with a different theme. One world would be all about Shy Guys, one would be about Boos and Dry Bones, etc. As a shooter, Mario's weapons would be variations on power-ups. Like, the "Fire Flower" would be a flame thrower. The game never got very far, just a premise and a bunch of concept art. Also, I think people were debating whether the ending should reveal that Mario was just on drugs the whole time.
I like the idea, but the whole "Mario was actually just on drugs, that's why he eats shrooms! HA HA GET IT?!" thing has been so overdone that it's become a cliche. Not to mention it's just an even cheaper version of All Just a Dream. Totally onboard with the more realistic portrayal, but I'd at least want it to stick instead of becoming a worn out punchline. That's my two cents on it anyway.
All just a dream is not always a punchline...so that's better too.
There are a few good ones, like the one from Vinesauce.
I like this idea, reminds me of the mega man fps that the metroid prime team were making that got canned. Also every edgy newgrounds/youtube flash animation has mario tripping out on drugs. It's become so tired at this point.
WE GOT SLOPES.
Does Luigi's Builder Outfit mean that we'll get a playable Luigi?
UPDATE: Luigi is playable, along with Toad and Toadette

Builder Mario is holding Cat Luigi in the artwork, and the page on Nintendo.com also has artwork of Cat Toadette. I guess they're both playable, but that's a weird thing not to mention...
Slopes are a very welcome addition, as is aboveground water, cat suits, and more level environments. It always bothered me that you couldn't make desert or ice levels in the original. Can't wait to see how much people abuse the Angry Sun.
Hmm, if Luigi, Toad and Toadette are playable now, what's gonna happen to their amiibo costumes?
Super into Mario Maker 2. It's everything I wished the original could be. Slopes are nice but what I'm really into is above-ground water and those nice desert, snowy, and jungle/forest themes. I wonder if the underground theme will change to reflect whatever's up above. That's how New Super Mario Bros. Wii and U did it.
Also, holy shit, a Super Mario 3D World theme? Look, I love that game to bits and pieces but I never saw this coming. I thought for sure they'd go with Super Mario Bros. 2/USA, which I'm still convinced could totally work.
Oh look, there's Boom Boom! More bosses confirmed! I'm so happy.

I never ended up getting the first Mario Maker since I never had a Wii U and heard too many things about how inferior the 3DS version was to want to get it. That being said, 2 is looking fantastic and will probably be a game I'll try to get once I have a Switch. There's just so much new stuff here.
I do wonder if the Mystery Mushroom will still be a thing here, and if it is, if they'll be able to be used in other themes...

I wonder if we'll be able to make specific pools of water or if it's, like, just filling the entire bottom half of the level with water. I really hope it's the former.
I hope for both.
Making stationary pools of water/lava in a manner similar to the box-shaped semi-solid platforms, and the option to add a global water/lava level to the stage that can rise or fall if the player so desires.
On that note, I also hope for the option to use a vertical canvas instead of a horizontal one, for tower stages or a rising lava stage.
You know what I'd really like to make? Those floating water bubbles, like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and U (and also Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, I guess). I wish the games would use those more often.
x2 I'm fairly sure we're getting vertical levels, if the scenes with the wind enemy and the parachuting Beetles are anything to go by.

I think I saw forced scrolling, which I don't believe was in the first game.
Yeah, that gives me hope.
Forced scrolling was in the first, but only straight to the right and at three fixed speeds.

In the scene where the autoscrolling is being adjusted it also appears that the maker has added a requirement to collect 50 coins.
