Aww, son of a bitch

On March 27th, 2024, the world ended. Just like that. At exactly 8:00 PM, Pacific Standard Time, the peoples of the western hemisphere woke to see the skies ablaze. The world burned. The oceans boiled, the earth was scorched, and entire countries turned to deserts of ash.

And all the while, some people swore they could hear a faint chuckling, like God himself was laughing at their misfortune.

Nobody knows what happened that day. Some say it was some freak cosmic councidents, others say it was a divine punishment. None of the survivors could really agree.

But Man is a resillient creature. Even after the majority of the population died in the fires of the 27th, the survivors... well, survived. They repopulated, however slowly. Most of the eastern hemisphere and parts of South America had already begun reconstruction by 2034. It's been slow, however, and only small portions of the larger cities have been successfully restored.

On April 17th, 2039, something happened. The sky turned dark in the bright of day, high noon to be exact. Men ceased their work to observe this phenominon and animals bayed and howled and hissed at the dark sky. After several minutes, flowing gold text slowly scriped itself along the now ebon dome. A single word.

END

Then the blackness faded and the sky was once again blue. Many, if not all, of the remaining population of Earth took it as some sort of sign. That they should repent or attempt to save themselves. A few others, mostly those in the few remaining positions of power, ignored this and continued reconstruction.

A few days after the Black Sky Event, as it's called, strange powers began to emerge in a select few across the scorched globe. Mutatins, superhuman atrubutes, gifts from God, whatever you may call them, they existed. Those who were granted these powers were called agnels, saviors, monsters, demons, what have you. But most people call them Freaks.

It is now the year 2056, March 27th. Exactly thirty-two years after the world turned to cinders. Our story begins in the ashen desert of San Francisco. It's not quite as hellish as some of the other ruins, like Las Vegas or Miami, but it's still very difficult to live in. Animals stalk the cracked and ruined streets, constant sandstorms wrack the desolate city, and gangs of Freaks hole up in half destroyed buildings.

You are a Freak. Specifically, a member of one of the few prominent Freak gangs in SF. A man known only as Mr. Lombard has contacted the various large gangs and gave them an offer. The higher ups won't tell you what, but you know it's big. The gangs have sent their representatives, you among them, to Mr. Lombard's stronghold in the dessicated sewer system to discuss the unknown offer.

The gangs are as follows:

The Horsemen, AKA The Harbingers, The Bringers: The Horsemen style themselves after the Four Horsmen of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelations. They believe that they will be the bringers of a second Apocalypse, meant to cleanse the world of all that they deam unworthy. The Harbingers are split up into four sects, each styled after one of the Four Horsemen.

The Bringers' abilites are usually centered around direct attack or some other agressive action. A Horseman of Pestilence may debilitate his foes with various diseases while a Horseman of Famine might leave her enemies starved and wasting away with but a touch.

The Nomadics, AKA The Wanderers: The Nomadics are exactly what their name entails. They are nomads, wandering the wastes of San Francisco, only taking what they need and only fighting when in dire straits. The Wanderers have no organization other than that they usually travel in small groups. Nomadics' abilites are usually centered around illusion or healing.

The Children of Man, AKA the Sons of Adam: The Children of Man believe themselves to be the epitome of evolution, the perfect specimens of mankind. They look down upon normal humans and look down slightly less so upon other Freaks. The Sons of Adam have no organization about them, as they all consider themselves equally perfect. The Children's abilites are most commonly based around enhanced physical attributes, like speed or strength.

The Gamblers, AKA Card Sharks, Gravediggers: The Gamblers are united in their belief in Lady Luck. They believe that luck is the only true driving force in the universe. A gang of risk takers and deal makers, The Gracedigger's abilites usually have something to do with inanimate objects, like telekinesis or technopathy.

The Fortians, AKA Weirdos, Starchildren: The Fortians could hardly be called a gang if not for the fact that there's so damn many of them running around the ruins of San Fran. The Fortians all share the common belief that there is no such thing as reality and that all life is purposeless. Most live their lives in a constant drug filled haze, stumbling about aimlessly through the wastes. Despite the fact that they have little to no actual skill, Starchildren are probably the most powerful of the gangs in terms of granted abilities. Fortian powers often feature blantant violations of conventional physiscs, like teleportation or time travel.
