This series has killed my ability to write anything that doesn't make reference to it in one way or another.

I don't mind.

Man that is gonna be good.

I think it's accurate to say Fate/Zero is "manly men doing manly things" in contrast to F/SN "LOL WOMEN AND CHILDREN". [lol]

SO, can someone give me a rundown of F/SN's main story route before Fate/zero? I'd read the manga, but I'm unsure of quality.

I've got new mythological machinery, and very handsome supernatural scenery. Goodfae: a mafia web serial

Given that it's a prequel, why would you need one? I guess there's the feeling of Foregone Conclusion that you get when you read the prequel afterwards, but the events of Fate Stay Night can't possibly affect Fate Zero because it happens later.

I can tell you who lives and dies, I guess.

Edited.

Basically, the Grail War is just a way to summon Heroic Spirits of legend from the Akashic Records. The Grail War is a system which allows access the Akashic Records and tap into its power, allowing the winner of the war to be granted one wish. The rest of the nitty gritty stuff gets explained in the story.

If I recall correctly, a good amount of the setting is explained in the prologue of the VN, isn't it?

Fate Zero itself will probably explain the relevant details as they come up.

Basically, people summon heroes from myth and history who are highly capable of Stuff Blowing Up and try to kill each other. Winner gets a wish. There's a bit more to it than that, but that's really all you need to know if you're not going to actually read FSN and have it explained indepth.

Wow, the first two volumes of this were kind of average for me, but volume three has The Fair Folk (although technically we don't really see much of the real ones).

Also I'm starting to get more of an idea of how the magic works, and it's surprisingly comparable to other magic rules like say The Dresden Files.

Does volume three have a movie? if so I'll have to pick up the movies again.

Yes — Volume 3 is Episodes 6 and 7 in the movie version. Episode 6 suffers from some Adaptation Decay, though.

If you've tried the other Nasuverse works, you'll see that the magic system introduced in Kara No Kyoukai figures quite a bit in the rest of the multiverse, particularly Tsukihime.

But that's probably the awesome part where they're investigating at the school and everything almost goes all Harry Potter (in the best possible way)!

Yeah, the magic seems a little different from what I saw in Fate Stay Night. Not inconsistent, just differently explained.

Well, it's more of a Bowdlerization than actual Adaptation Decay it seems. And Satsuki Kurogiri is Demoted to Extra.

Hmm the most important part of the magic system as such that comes up here doesn't seem to be quite the same as in FSN. Like Origins. Okay, Shirou has an origin of swords and Kiritsugu has binding and severing. Whatsisface has consumption, but is not a mage. Aren't origins supposed to affect your magecraft specialties? KNK has them as something that can be awoken and take over your personality, though.

I've been under the assumption that everyone has an origin, and there is almost always one type of magic someone can do, but I don't know quite know what you mean by take over. If you mean Shiki, isn't that a consequence of her family's legacy, rather than her origin specifically?

According to the Type-Moon wiki, there's an "Elemental Affinity" and an "Origin". Having an expressed Origin brings you further from an elemental affinity, but magi can still perform magic by following their origin (if it's expressed stronly enough). Shirou's affinity is apparently "sword", and his origin is also "sword" (probably something metaphorical about his personality).

[up] Before the accident, Shiki's origin was "conflict". It became "the void" after the accident.

[down] Rascal explained it better.

He's referring to the fact that Lio Shirazumi, a person with no magical abilities whatsoever, had his origin awakened by Souren Araya. As a result, Shirazumi became significantly more...crazy. Oh, and gained superhuman strength, speed, and a weak Healing Factor. And could eat people - as in, all of them, their entire bodies - without trouble. Now, see, that 'eating' thing? He was able to do that prior to his origin being awakened, just be being told what it was. So it seems that simply knowing what your origin is gives you some measure of superhuman abilities. The 'awakening' process, IIRC, involves Lio acquiring the aggregate total knowledge, strength and skills of all of his past lives, most of which were carnivorous animals. This is discussed at length by Touko and Shiki in the 7th movie, though.

Yes. And didn't he awaken the origins of the other people he picked up as well?

No, he didn't. For Kirie, he just allowed her body to detach itself. For Fujino, he just healed her spine.

Wow. I didn't realize people's origins could change.

I had assumed HF Shirou couldn't use UBW because his mind didn't match his origin, but I guess it could simply be because his origin changed, so he couldn't use Archer's UBW.

Arha Since: Jan, 2010

It's not quite like that for Shirou. I doubt his origin changed, but a reality marble requires the caster to have a lot of mental restrictions. He didn't fit the requirements anymore. Specifically, whether or not it was the right thing to do he personally recognizes rescuing Sakura as a violation of his ideal and his ideal needs to be upheld for UBW to work.

Kiritsugu matched up to his origin well and didn't really have a Reality Marble, he just utilized his properties to become the ultimate mage killer.
