There are lot's of blogs and other sites dedicated to free VSTs: Try

In technical terms, I mostly use Garage Band, though I've been meaning to properly upgrade to Logic Pro for a while (don't ask).
In terms of writing and composition... it's hard to explain. I just sort of write.
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.Since this thread is more about helping on making music (the title's a bit misleading), I have one more question, it's a bit specific...
I downloaded a certain soundfont
a long time ago, and it came with this bundled reverb, and I can't find a way to take it off on FL Studio 9. On 8 I still could do it by messing with Decay and Sustain a little bit, but it just doesn't work anymore on 9. Any tips?

No regret shall pass over the threshold!I composed about 16 songs with FL Studio before moving onto Sony Vegas and Open MPT(it's a tracker/sequencer doodad for those unfamiliar) and just using .wav samples.
All of the above methods are fairly useful and easy to do.

(*Ahem*) Anyways...
I have Renoise and Reaper, and I'm decent with both, but tips with this sort of thing would be nice. :3
...Oh, and a sticky for this thread would be just dandy. :3
