This is a movie I remember thinking could actually have a good remake. Now, I know, I should go to hell for being an idiot for thinking that, but this is just what I thought when I saw it awhile ago. It was pretty good, but it suffered from have a lower budget and other restrictions which made some things not as good or even downright bad (like the monsters; they were pretty lame, I'm sorry). It had/has potential in the right hands. There is a pretty good possibility they could muck things up. However, seeing del Toro be involved with it fills me with hope.
I saw a promo on TV for this, and I must say, it is probably the scariest thing I'm seen in a while. If the movie is as well put together as these trailers are, it's going to be one hell of a horror movie. Watching that trailer on my laptop just doesn't do it justice. Just imagine watching it in a big, dark theater.
I saw it in a theater, after I had already seen it twice on Youtube. The tension is something else.
I've got two guns pointed west and a broken compass. When I saw the trailer before Insidious, much screaming occurred.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/As far as remakes go, this was entertaining enough, but things kept bothering me, like not doing anything with the fact that a creature has just been crushed and lost its arm; you'd think the limb would be discovered by one of the disbelieving characters. I also thought it showed the monsters too early(though the effects were done well).
If dental damage of any kind makes you squeamish, avoid the movie. That being said, I don't know why it was rated R; most of the violence(not all of it) was bloodless or implicit.

Been hearing that it's extremely creepy, but suffers badly from Idiot Plot.

I've had glasses of milk that are scarier than this. If this movie deserved to be rated R for scariness, then Insidious deserved an NC-17.
In fact, you might as well have given Drag Me To Hell an R-rating. That one was far bloodier and had more jolts with a mean streak a mile wide(though the goofiness off-set everything).
That's about the size of it. The movie asks you to believe that an old man convinced people that he was stabbed in the leg and through the back with his own tools repeatedly on accident.

I deliberately mentioned it because I knew you would not be pleased. The monsters' entire schtick revolves around it and it's portrayed in fairly graphic detail, as in someone is shown to have chiseled their own teeth out(you see their mouth all fucked up and bloodied and toothless) and does it to someone else during the opening.
Despite the average reviews and from what you've said Prowler, I'm still very creeped out by the trailer alone, but that's probably because I've had a fear of small evil night creatures ever since seeing Gremlins when I was really young. Seriously, I freaking hate the thought of ugly little bastards sneaking into my room at night and murdering me in my bed. Which is exactly what I see happening from the trailer.
I read the spoilers, but not enough to know the whole story. I think I'll just wait for the DVD.

A remake of a 1973 made-for-television horror film. The director is apparently a comic book artist named Troy Nixey, it's been produced by Guillermo del Toro.
It should be released in late August.
