Oh, right, forgot about that. Guess I just kinda figured, back before the reboot happened, that it was gonna be a full-on reboot. Not this half-and-half nonsense where the Lantern series' and Batman get to move along like nothing happened.
Yeah, Bi Guy works.
My various fanfics. But Earth-2's GL is entirely different from all the others. He actually gets weaker when he has to go in space.
As I said, I started with the New 52, and even if the dead girl/boyfriend/wife/husband has been played to death, it's nice to have a guy who just happens to be gay, and that's it.
Especially in the very enjoyable cast of Earth-2's league. Seriously, a gay guy, a black guy, a latina girl, a black girl, the one white girl who is now an Aang-like red robot, an egyptian guy, and the leader of the world army is sikh ? Yes please. That's what I call diversity. The "real" Justice League could learn a thing or to.
No offense, but here's the thing. Most people in this thread did not start with the Nu52. Most of them, myself included, read quite a few pre-Nu52 comics before the Nu-52. As such, we have a different perspective on this than you. This includes our various takes on Alan Scott, and how he should be handled. Most of us are familiar with the straight elder statesman, (who still stuck around on Earth most of the time as opposed to going to space, by the way,) and not this young gay whippersnapper.
Now, seeing as you haven't read pre-Nu52 comics, that's not really an issue for you, nor am I saying it should be. If you've only read Nu52 (which you apparently have,) and like the current Alan, that's fine. Just try to understand that most people in this thread aren't going to see it the same way.
If they wanted a gay Green Lantern, why not Simon Baz? He's a new character. They could go any direction they liked without throwing away everything that fans knew about the character, like they did with Alan Scott. Taking the time to actually create a new character instead of repurposing an old one is almost always the better approach.
Every time I tried to read an issue of Earth-2, all I kept thinking was "That's not Jay, that's not Alan, that's not Kendra", etc., and it just put me off the book, regardless of story. If I had all-new characters to read, it might have been different.

Earth-2 might be good but it sucked when they were on Namek for so long and even the drinking game of counting the naaaaaaaaarrrg's almost gave me alcohol poisoning. but now that they are off of the namek of the last arc and the team is actually doing stuff it hopefully gets better. especially with that weekly coming out.
"Namek" is a joke term that I first saw on /co/ about how the Omega bizarro arc never seemed to end and it was filled with annoying jimmy, and val doing nothing and bat-dad doing too much. luckily the old characters came back and did stuff. and the narrrg's (a pain sound effect that was in the book like once an issue) were used a little too much.

It may be that, but I also happen to have a rather liberal point of view when it comes to rewriting characters (as long as it is explicitly said that the character is rewritten/there is no continuity, I hate inconsistencies). I guess it comes down to what people consider to be the most important characteristics of a given character. I thought I would be disappointed by Kendra, who has little in common with the one Hawkgirl I knew and loved from the DCAU, yet I enjoy her.

To be honest, I refused to read comics for a LONG time because of how complicated the continuity was, and how many identities the various superheroes had. IT is complicated enough when there are five or six Bat-heroes, but when every one of them had three, four or five different identities over the years, it becomes really messy. So even if in my case it wouldn't matter (I didn't know most of the Earth-2 identities, except of course for that journalist and that dad), I don't think it would be good for DC in the long run to create even more new identities while there already are so many available. For example, and even if the Worlds' Finest series are terrible, I like the ID of the new Huntress, who hadn't been used for a while if I'm correct.
Again, I am liberal when it comes to reboots, as long as the term "reboot" is explicitly used. I love the new Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell: Arise, even if she has very little in common with her Stand Alone Complex counterpart.

I'm the opposite when it comes to characters. I love years of genuine history, and learning about where a character has come from. If it's confusing, I'll sort it out eventually. And I love watching them grow and change over the years. It's a emotional investment of time and energy following the fictional existence of characters that I really enjoy. And so when all of that is suddenly gone and there's this character in name only, it's one of the biggest turn-offs imaginable for me as a comics reader.

I didn't have a problem with alan scott being gay since the guy in earth 2 is more or less alan scott in name only
The thing I do have a problem with is whatever james robinson had planned for him and the rest of the "not jsa" was derailed when he left and tom taylor turned the series into injustice 2.0 and what i am hearing about worlds end is not exactly leaving me with hope either
" I did the right thing, didn't I? It all worked out in the end." "In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends."To be fair I mostly enjoy Batgirl for Barbara, not for the various plots (especially not the one with the new Joker, if I had some Brain Bleach at hand...). She just looks really human to me compared to most other hero(ine)s. So even if what she faces is far from unforgettable, I like to read it.
I'll check Demon Knights then. I had a look at Animal Man, but it was quite weird and I was a bit tired. I should give it another try with a clear head.
To me, making specifically Alan Scott gay had a point when the series was built around the JSA guys. Alan was the guy among the JSA. DC was publishing a mainstream series in which the world's greatest, most powerful superhero was a gay man. That was friggin' cool - my then-boyfriend and I were super-excited by the coolness and uniqueness of that. Alan filled that "paragon" role for the JSA, like Superman in the JLA and Cap in the Avengers - giving that kind of role to a gay hero was fresh.
Of course, we have a black Superman there now, which is fine enough. But I am bitter about losing the opportunity to see Alan grow into the "greatest hero" role that he fulfilled in the post-Crisis JSA.
I still don't get the "in name only" criticism. This was very much the same character that James Robinson wrote in The Golden Age.

Well, Alan could still fill that role, since I don't think Black Superman is strong enough, yet anyway to fill his predecessor's shoes.
My various fanfics. If we try to define the team through Five-Man Band dynamics (more or less), Alan remains the closest thing there is to The Hero. Val is still a young man, he is insecure, and he is not leader material right now.
The Golden Age is an out of continuity story. When I think of Alan Scott, it's his many other appearances throughout the years that I'm comparing the New 52 version to. If you strip away all those life events and relationships, how can he be the same character? He can't, and he isn't. Not even close.

I love Cooke's art. The covers he did for Batwing were great.
But, holy crap, Bruce is smiling in costume! Is that even legal?
Lafayette StrongI don't care, I love it. I love that, I love Alfred being a dad, and I love Clark and Diana being adorable.
My various fanfics.

Or, like I said from the beginning, make Guy Gardner the gay Green Lantern, and don't change a thing about him. A no-bullshit, full of himself, badass smug asskicking sunnuvabitch who just happens to enjoy cock.
Now THAT'S a pagetopper.
