We do not seem to have a thread for Selkie. This must be rectified immediately.

Fun little webcomic about adopting...something. The art, while simplistic, is well done, and has improved nicely.

First page, for those who want to start from the beginning.

I like this comic. I especially like this comic because I like things that deal with adoption, having three brothers and sisters who were adopted.

I have zero experience with adoption, and I still felt the comic was rather touching. The art is a bit of an eyesore, especially at first, but I can't deny it has improved.

Well, I think Fighteer (having adopted a kid, if I recall) would probably be the best person to ask about adoption here on the wiki, if you wanted to know more.

I doubt this would be the kind of webcomic he'd like to read though. tongue

[up][up] From what I've observed, Fighteer's not real big on Slice of Life or Life Embellished stuff. I could be wrong, of course.

. . . It links TV Tropes from the comic header?

Gentlemen: It appears our goal is obvious. The writer of this comic obviously reads tv tropes. That means he must read his own page, as a matter of pride. We must take him from that page to here, so we can bombard him with WMG and fan wank. Any suggestions?

He seems to be bombarded enough in the comments. He gives off the same pleasantly frazzled air as Dan Shive (whose work he's admitted to liking.)

Finished the archive binge, though I suppose it's not much of an archive yet. Still haven't quite gotten over Selkie's appearance—the skin tone makes me think "walking corpse," and the teeth do not help. Charming kid, though. And you can really tell this isn't the author's first comic—Sluggy Freelance took four years to reach the level of narrative quality demonstrated as early as #22.)

Alternately pleased and oddly frustrated that this comic links so many other comics I almost never hear people talk about. I actually re-added The Phoenix Requiem to my to-read list because of this, but there's no way I can keep up with all the others at once, no matter how interesting they seem.

Huh, so what other comics has he done?

Also, I really like the whole inversion of the "Cute monster girl" trope. While selkie is cute, she is not pretty (unless you have a fetish for that, ewwww.)

I'm sure other fishmen will find her quite beautiful. tongue

His previous comic was something called The Adventures of Sue and Kathryn. He makes references to it several times in Selkie, as a Show Within a Show. However, he must have pulled it off the interwebz, as I can't find any archives.

As far as I know, he never did any other webcomics.

I wonder if there's a better onomatopoeia for "squi-crunch". Must work on that.

But "squi-crunch" is so awesome! Although may "schlurp" or something of that sort would work.

Also..."Must work on that"? Are you sure you aren't the webcomic's author in disguise? tongue

Also using this as an excuse to link the latest strip (didn't link it before because it looked like the conversation had dried up).

One of the hazards of spending too much time on TV Tropes is that I can no longer decide whether this is heartbreaking, or just trying too hard.

I called this from the time Amanda freaked out at Selkies adoption. (Just did an Archive Binge.)

Mainly because she's always popular with the parents, so... why is she still in the orphanage?

Kids a jerk, but no one deserves to see everyone leave but them. Also, yeah, file it under heartbreaking.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

I file it under a bit of both, personally.

Trying too hard, because the dialogue does feel a bit forced from my perspective.

Heartbreaking, because I can actually see someone thinking/saying that.

To me, it's really one of those scenes that's a great idea, but it suffers from the limitations of the comic medium. Would be better if we actually heard Amanda's frustration and sorrow.

Still, definitely sad. Amanda is earning her Jerkass Woobie merits quite nicely.
