The origonal's effects felt solid rather than ethereal. Which actually helped me not get nightmares, I tend to get more freaked out by stuff that isnt material. CGI seems like it would be better then but it went too far in the other direction. But it could have worked very well for me if it was a little more solid.
Yeah, it seemed like they wanted to show off their budget a bit too much. Hence the spaceship
I saw it. Liked it. CGI only bugged me in a few scenes. Found it captured the spirit of Carpenter's really well, if not the atmosphere in all instances.
Regarding the ending: Notice that Kate got into the snowmobile that the Thing took to the ship. The one with less fuel. She ain't gonna make it.
I've got two guns pointed west and a broken compass.... Have you ever wished for a film to be unmade? ...

Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.
Yeah, but I don't know how to make King Kong Escapes disappear from history

Already disappointed by the CGI and haven't seen it yet. Earlier on, the director claimed he would be using actual, physical special effects like the original film, which are SO much creepier, cooler, and more convincing. There is nothing the original film did that would have been improved by CG. Not one thing.
bogleech.com for my writing, comics and cartoons. That happens to me now and then.

Fantastic Weapon Generator!
I can think of...two films where that happened; Zodiac and Laid To Rest 2.

Davy Jones from Pirates Of The Caribbean was a mild example for me. I thought that just the tentacles on his face were CGI, and the rest was practical prosthetic makeup. I was wrong.
Yeah, the effects on this film just don't hold up when compared to the original. Sigh. I'm just getting worried that practical prosthetics on the level of Rick Baker's skills will one day be a lost art if we're not careful.

It already is. Rob Bottin (who did the effects for the original) retired in 2002 after the projects he was getting weren't the big horror and action films he used to do (his last movie was Serving Sara, of all things).

That's a bit of a stretch.
With lackluster CG, a ham-fisted excuse to bring in American characters, inconsistency in itelligence on the creature's part, a Sy-FY-esque last 20 minutes, and a tacked on setup to the Carpenter film... At best, it'll end up like Rob Zombie's Halloween remake. At worst, it'll be completely forgotten, like most (if not all) of the Platinum Dunes remakes.

I just got back from seeing this and I really did not like the use of CGI. Carpenter's effects were so visceral, which is exactly what you need in a film about body horror. The CGI made it feel like a videogame.
I also thought the way they segued into the 'Carpenter's Thing' storyline was poorly put together.
