That's actually a pretty great apology on their part. We really need more creators saying "It doesn't matter what we intended, we're screwed up and we're sorry."

I do feel that 'transmisogynistic' is getting over-used for issues that have to do with simple transphobia, though. Some issues are specific issues individuals or society has with trans women, but many are about the reaction to transness overall.

(I also feel that 'misogyny' is getting overused as effectively a substitute for sexism; if it's about enforcing standard societal gender roles, it's probably sexism, not hatred of women).

Transmisogyny is a term coined for the intersection of transphobia and misogyny.

It was coined by Julia Serano in her 2007 book Whipping Girl and used to describe the unique discrimination faced by trans women because of "the assumption that femaleness and femininity are inferior to, and exist primarily for the benefit of, maleness and masculinity",[1][2][3] and the way that transphobia intensifies the misogyny faced by trans women (and vice versa).[1] Transmisogyny is a central concept in transfeminism and is commonly seen in intersectional feminist theory.

It's a valuable coinage and useful, I just feel it shouldn't be used to completely replace 'transphobia', but that's what I've seen happen a lot lately.

Yeah, its he replacing transphobia that worries me, especially since it only applies to Mt F and not Ft M so it can be a bit erasing of a part of the trans community that already has a harder time getting visibility and support.

We now have the first confirmed same-sex couple from an American children's show [http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/105916338157/korrasami-is-canon-you-can-celebrate-it-embrace]

"[...] However, we still operated under this notion, another “unwritten rule,” that we would not be allowed to depict that in our show. So we alluded to it throughout the second half of the series, working in the idea that their trajectory could be heading towards a romance.

But as we got close to finishing the finale, the thought struck me: How do I know we can’t openly depict that? No one ever explicitly said so. It was just another assumption based on a paradigm that marginalizes non-heterosexual people. If we want to see that paradigm evolve, we need to take a stand against it. And I didn’t want to look back in 20 years and think, “Man, we could have fought harder for that.” Mike and I talked it over and decided it was important to be unambiguous about the intended relationship. Not necessarily that far, but he's still bringing up the same tired, unsupported argument about children being better off with a mother and a father, as well as this "most Idahoans don't want gay marriage" thing.

It's just a waste of energy and taxpayer dollars. And Jesus, the people kept reelecting him (yes, even in spite of the iffy education and stagnant economy under his watch). I love it here in the north, but jeez...

Florida is now the 36th state to legalize gay marriage! The judicial details are a bit complicated, but the short version is that a judge declared Florida's gay marriage ban unconstitutional back in August and issued an injunction to prevent the state from enforcing its bans, but put a stay on her own injunction Legal Stuff happened. The stay expired at midnight last night, allowing the injunction to come into effect — meaning that gay marriage is now legal in the Sunshine State.

Congrats to the many happy couples!

This is good news. I can drive a few hours and get married to whoever the hell I choose. Now if only it counted once I got home. Give up already, Alabama state government. Must our history always be one of standing firmly in the way of equality and progress?

I am really shocked. I honestly thought we'd be the last state to legalize it.

Well, we was legalized by a federal court ruling rather than legislative action or a popular vote. That has more to do with where the lawsuits spring up than state politics.

That's the thing: LGBT rights are mainly being handled (properly, in my opinion) as a Constitutional matter, which means it's up to the judicial branch to settle. Legislators in red states certainly aren't going to up and pass laws allowing gay marriage, and the Federal government has effectively punted it to the courts.

Church cancels funeral 15 minutes before it starts because the memorial video showed the deceased proposing to her wife.

Vanessa Collier's friends say the funeral was canceled Saturday by New Hope Ministries 15 minutes after the service was supposed to start because the church would not allow a picture to be shown of Collier proposing to her wife. The open casket and flowers were in place and about 170 people were in attendance.

According to Chaplain Gary Rolando, who would later preside over the funeral across the street at Newcomer Funeral Home, the New Hope Ministry is very community-oriented. He says pastors there welcome those who are gay but ask that alternative lifestyles be censored in the church. New Hope Ministries is not commenting on the decision.

He says moments prior to the funeral service, a video that was supposed to be played during the funeral was reviewed by church officials. The church asked for the video to be edited in order to proceed. Rolando says the family refused to take the picture of Collier's proposal out of the video, and the funeral had to be moved to the mortuary across the street.

[up] Okay, that is totally in a different boat from "we don't want to perform a gay marriage." That's just being awful. Also, it can be rather hard to edit a video last minute if it's on a DVD or it was a video file.
