And then they'll grow up in closets, horrified of themselves, liars to the world...

We'll be lucky if they grow up at all. If this isn't stopped I would predict a big increase in suicides amongst gay youth.

If gay marriage happened all across the country then maybe a lot of people would finally realize that gay people don't want to destroy the country or whatever other bullshit they imagine. After a few hostile months of course.

Unfortunately it seems like there shall always be people hanging on to bigoted ways though.

[up]What would it take to convince the more hostile states that gay people aren't out to destroy the country?

I hate to say it, but I think violence will increase once gay marriage is everywhere.

Really? I think the hostilities will end after a few months, and people will go back to their lives a little wiser and a little less fearful.

You don't convince these people of things. You just try to avoid them.

No, but I think a lot of people will realize that gay people aren't out to harm anyone and stop caring that gay people are marrying.

Sort of like after Civil Rights people found out that Birth Of A Nation was a huge lie and black people weren't out to be slasher movie villains against white ladies.

If it happens soon I have a feeling twenty years from now discriminating against them is just going to be thought of like any other discrimination. With a few people just excused for being "from a different time".

Certainly, interracial marriage went down pretty smoothly despite the screaming fits conservatives threw prior to it getting passed.

There were a lot less states disallowing that than states disallowing gay marriage.

I doubt you will see mass riots/violence if gay marriage is ever brought in nation wide. The more likely scenario is that people loudly complain for a few months, see the world hasn't ended, remain bigoted but get bored and move on with their lives/onto opposing the next civil rights issue. Their minds won't change but I doubt they will keep up overt activity outside of a loud minority. Organized/large scale violence against sexual minorities/mass civil unrest is very unlikely to occur, sadly individual homophobic attacks are likely to continue as they always have.

And I wouldn't blame them for holding out, opposition to gay marriage is still a powerful wedge issue in those states. And neutral Democrats are preferable to their probable Republican replacements on the issue anyway.

Well, if violence occurs, all it will achieve is make the american homophobes about as good as how they view muslims, and they'll suffer social isolation and no sympathy from the masses.

The hateful die alone, and it's every bit as sweet as karmic justice gets.

Banding, however, only helps making them primitive savages, as accusations of mob barbarism would arise.

Muslim extremists groups survive by middle eastern inputs. Western evangelical groups have no reserves.

Homosexuality still being illegal in Alabama really doesn't surprise me, considering that they only legalised inter-racial marriage in 2000.

They're not the only socially-backward Southern state though - segregation is seemingly still legal in Georgia, according to this. Even if it's not actually legal, it seems that police have been acting as though it is anyway...

[up]But homosexuality is legal in    Alabama   . It has been for a good 10 years now. Whether the general populace here accepts that...I doubt it.
