In light of this suggestion for the TLP draft that I'm working on, I come here to get more solid information. Does the Discworld setting have a clear Fantasy Counterpart Culture for Russia (be it the long-defunct Empire or the modern Federation) and the Soviet Union? If yes, does it qualify for the aforementioned draft trope? All that I can gather paints an unclear picture, with pretty all of the countries that the aforementioned suggestion named being far more analogous to the Balkans and Austria-Hungary than the Russian Empire or any of its successor states.

No it does not. As you've already noted some Discworld countries/cultures might share a few passing similarities if you squint but nothing that you can say definitively this is DW Russia in the same way there absolutely ARE Discworld versions of Africa, Australia and China.

I think it's a generic Eastern European place, which Africa is a whole continent so half a continent.

I believe the Evil Empire (now defunct) was something of a USSR expy, made up of a bunch of Eastern European expies, like Uberwald.

So I saw the cartoon of The Amazing Maurice that's just come out.

I...feel like the tone of the movie is very different from the book. It felt like kind of a letdown, overall.

"Kind of a letdown" seems to sum up more recent Discworld adaptions in general, doesn't it?

I just reread the book this month and my favorite new detail from a reread is Death and Susan commenting about the Gaiter kids' names.

I've been picking up the series where I left off, read Night Watch and Monstrous Regiment. The former I honestly didn't like much, Carver is a boring and unpleasant character that seems to exist mainly to give Vimes his own Joker and doesn't do a great job of it. Monstrous Regiment, on the other hand, was really, really good. I didn't know anything about it going in and it made for a fantastic experience, one of the most poignant Discworld books in both plot and prose. I particularly liked how Strappi and Jackrum briefly appear to be yet another instance of the Nobby and Colon palette swaps only to end up being massively different characters, Jackrum in particular absolutely steals the show (and caught me off guard as a character more than once).

Finally watched the cartoon version of The Amazing Maurice, and I rather liked it. There are things I didn't like much (chiefly the Piper being reduced to a one-dimensional character, some tropes that were subverted in the book being played straight, and the rushed-up ending), but on the whole it was entertaining and I could still feel the Pratchett spirit at times. I'd give it a 7 on a scale where The Watch would be 1 and Hogfather (my personal favourite adaptation) would be 9.

Maurice is fun. It’s not as good as the book and it’s very clearly pretty low-budget, but I enjoyed it a lot and everyone I’ve shown it to has liked it too.

Hi there, I was wondering if you folks could help me?

I've been rather obsessively marking down page quote sources and stumbled across The Unwitting Comedian. The quote is Bouncy Normo's suicide note, but instead of listing a book, it just says Discworld. The L Wiki (or whatever it was called) had an entry on Normo, but didn't say what book(s) he was featured in. I've never read the series, so I wouldn't be able to figure it out myself. Might any of you know where it's from? If so, I can file it on QuoteSource.Discworld.

Thanks in advance!
