Speaking of destroying the original characters, is anyone else wondering what the logic behind changing the Good Fairies' names was?

I heard that they might be moving the release date from July 2nd to May 30th. Considering that this will put it only a week after X-Men: Days of Future Past, it sounds like the studio has confidence in this thing.

It just means they're expecting it to be financially successful, probably on the level of Alice In Wonderland or Oz the Great and Powerful. Or they could just be trying to fill the void left after The Good Dinosaur got pushed back 18 months.

As for quality, I'm planning to withhold judgement until we actually start seeing footage, which will now almost certainly be sometime this year.

Put in my two cents for the three-on-one duel between the Good Fairies and Maleficent.

Do we have enough info to make a trope page, or should we wait until we get a teaser or something? I'm asking because I want to start a WMG page.

Are they goign to make her look sympathetic? Because if so I may facepalm the holy effing shit out myself.

I technically mentioned that it could work, as long as we had a good actress, director, and writer.

I also pointed out that making her sympathetic would fall into the Wicked comparison trap, especially since Oz The Great And Powerful attempted to do that.

[up]From what I've seen, the script hasn't exactly fallen into the hole as much as cannonballed into it.

If you ask me, they ought to be taking inspiration from something like Grendel rather than Wicked.

[up][up] Damn it. I hoped we'd at least get to the trailers before realizing how much this could suck balls.

[up] I haven't watched Grendel, but I hear it was a mostly-okay adaptation of Beowulf. And I second the idea that they should draw from that instead of Wicked, but that's mostly because I don't want Wicked to get ruined by association.

Well, checking the Google doc for more ideas.

Double posting because watching Return To Oz has given me a thought. Disney should have made this back in The '80s, when they were still willing to be dark.

[up]More like they were trying to be dark. Tron and The Black Hole had already kept them from trying serious sci-fi, Something Wicked This Way Comes's failure, along with that of Black Cauldron and Return to Oz, scared them from dark fantasy.

The writer of Snow White And The Huntsman is apparently being brought in to help rework the first act. Not sure if this is encouraging or yet another red flag. Sometimes this sort of thing helps in the end, sometimes it doesn't.

Another article quotes them as claiming that "the last 75 minutes are very entertaining." Bit of a broad statement, that. Although it would be entertaining if something like this happened. evil grin

And perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well.

Re-reading the summary, I'm finding myself hoping that Disney's misleading people with the wording to reveal "Guess what? Maleficent's true happiness is being evil for the evulz, and therefore cursing Aurora granted her that. The End!"

I read up on this a little more and found out that they've replaced the actress for Young Maleficent, so that explains part of it.

Did anyone ever see this "the story from point of the villains" book Disney once did? I always laugh about the part in which Maleficent claims that she simply took tea with Phillip...complete with pictures.
