There was a lot more "GAR" than "MOE" a a decade or two. Now, it's the oppisite.

which do you prefer more?

Yep, I'm still here.

I prefer a good story. If one or the other or both is present that's nice too.

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.

[up]It's the opposite of Moe, with it's CUTE replaced with BADASS.

Meh, I'd say the only thing that's really changed in the last fifteen years or so is the lightbulb went off over people's heads and they realized there was enough of a demand for cute characters that they could build an entire subgenre out of it and make a shitload of money in the process. It only seems like there's more moe out there than GAR because there're so many new shows specifically - nay, aggressively - marketed as moe; think of how Negima, back before Akamatsu sprung his trap and turned it into a fighting manga like he wanted, had press releases bragging about its cast of thirty girls, each catering to different tastes.

Honestly, I think GAR's marketing strategy, honed through decades of selling the little-boy dream, is ironically more subtle - all you really have to do to sell a story full of manly characters is to have the characters act badass, and then sit back and wait for the fanboy word-of-mouth network to spread news of how awesome your show is.

As for which I prefer, well... *shrug*. It depends on the show, and what role the character's meant to play within it.

My theory.....TTGL was too gar, it ended up making every single show after it that attempted to be gar feel less gar than it actually is since TTGL is still fresh in so many people's mind, causing people to (un)consciously compare them to TTGL.

Eh, which ever has less obnoxious (and less creepy) fan service.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

I think both aspect can only really shine when they contrast each other.

There's really no point if you don't define Moe (which you can't) and GAR (which, while not as meaningless as Moe, is still very up for interpretation).

Ooh, Ooh, a debate about...gasp...Moe? Let me play, let me play!

Actually, I'd rather not, being a veteran of many a long and bloody campaign as it is.

As has been well-documented in these parts, my tastes are steeply inclined towards the former, but a significant number of my favourite things feature a combination of both in varying ratios.

I've never been a huge fan of preposterone-charged spectacle, this much I can say.

I prefer to go with moeGAR. Such as Nanoha or Kaiji.

But really, I think my personal order goes like this: Cold-blooded GAR > Thing I find moe > Hot-blooded GAR > Things supposed to be moe

My theory.....TTGL was too gar

Yeah, no.

I kinda boggled at that myself. Isn't 'too much GAR' a matter for theoretical physicists to debate?

I liked TTGL, though it frequently reached parody levels in this regard. Perhaps there's a limit to how much badass one can accept in a serious story.

"Too much GAR" is a purely theoretical term. There is insufficient evidence to present a case for the existence of any sort of upper limit tongue

Well, if you loosely define moe as meaning cuddly cute and GAR as manly badass... then the question is still sort of meaningless since not only can anything can be done well or poorly but they describe entirely different approaches to a character.

[up]I have heard enough about that god damn show already. Seriously. What does it even have to do with anything?

Anyway, as for the subject at hand... how are they even comparable?

When moe or GAR is done well, they're both enjoyable. For example, the moe character is sweet and endearing and is also a good, interesting character, and GAR is awesome but not overdone and irritating.

So... this question is kind of pointless.

I thought it meant something like "So manly I would go gay for it" even though the origin is really just gay spelled incorrectly.

If people learned from their mistakes, there wouldn't be this thing called bad habits.
