I don't like nooks. I like having paper between my hands, and the feeling of turning a page. Also, books don't run out of batteries.

I don't want to give Inheritance the honor of forcing me to get my dad to drive me to the bookstore and buy a physical copy.

I'll probably get it eventually. I read the other three, and I intend to see this through to the end, but it's not especially high on my priority list. I managed to get Brisingr for 40% off much sooner than I would have otherwise. We'll see if I can get lucky again this time around.

So I've managed to acquire the novel through completely legal means. Read through some of it, got bored within the first seventy pages, and skipped to the end.

The confrontation with Galbatorix was...MEH. It could've been truly spectacular, but instead we basically have Eragon combining mental forces with the Eldunari and making Galby "understand" every emotion he caused thoughout his lifespan until Galby essentially has a meltdown and causes a giant explosion and stuff. And after a rather boring winding down in which Nasuada becomes queen because of her l33t leadership skills (hah), Roran gets to rule Palancar Valley, and they modify the dragon rider oath to allow dwarves and urgals into it, Eragon sails to the Undying Lands...er...I mean, the place beyond the sea where he can calm the Eldunari down, since they've practically gone insane from such a long period of service to Galby.

Also Arya is crowned queen of the elves after her mum dies in combat (no surprise there at all, who else would take up the mantle? A random never-before-named character? PAH!) and she and Eragon finally admit their twoo wuv. She's also the next dragon rider of the green dragon, although the egg only hatches within the last couple chapters so we never actually...you know...see her being dragon-ridery in combat or anything. Oh, and in an ass pull, the Eldunari reveal that there actually are eggs all over the place! They were just hiding! Haha!

I was not very impressed. I'll borrow the book when it comes out at the library and slog through it, but it would not be worth my money.

He manages to break free of the vows from Galby and helps Eragon in the final battle after he realizes 'OH SNAPZ MY NAME IT'S TOTALLY DIFFERENT NOW LOLZ,' which was pointed out in Brisingr but not acted on until THE FINAL CONFRONTATION FOR DRAMA. And then he decides to go into exile with Thorn, wandering the world and maybe possibly helping Eragon train the next generation of riders.

Oh, and he and Nasuada had some kind of random-thrown-together LURV that really seemed tacked on to give him more angst about having to leave. It was...very undeveloped.

Yeah, Paolini went all for the cliches here.

It doesn't help that the beginning was just so...dull. Sure it has Eragon conquering another town for the Varden, but it reads like any other battle. Oh, but there is one HUGE Deus ex Machina there, in that they find a spear crafted by the elves when they were still fighting dragons. This spear can penetrate any ward protecting a dragon and kill it. And it is a super uber magical powerful weapon that was never mentioned before and clearly was written because Paolini needed something appropriately dramatic to help kill Shruiken at the climax.

Yeah. Y'know, I'm probably just gonna stay out of this thread until I do read the book myself. I'd rather see how far away I can see everything coming without the aid of actual knowledge.

A few things that irked me:

  • After Galbi dies (not a spoiler and you know it) it's like only like 3/4 of the way through the book. Then it just drags.
  • Paolini outdoes his Dr. Who reference in book 3 with a DIRECT reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail in this one. Basically, the killer rabbit exists in this universe. I'm surprised he didn't give Angela a holy hand grenade.
  • The nuke reference left a bad taste in my mouth as well.
  • Any time Eragon encounters the giant snails, he tries to be funny. It's painfully, PAINFULLY unfunny.
  • When the cultists were talking about Old Ones in their purple crystal temple? I hoped they would be something closer to ACTUAL Old Ones, instead of, you know, piddly Ra'zac eggs.

Galbatorix was cool in the scenes where he first appears. Then he sort of falls apart.

Oh, yes, Sloan. He and Eragon meet again in Ellesmera, when Eragon, Roran, Katrina, and their baby go there after defeating Galby and shortly before Eragon sails off across the see. Sloan is just kinda hovering around their gathering since he can't actually interact with them at all, and he's heartbroken because he can hear his daughter but can't even see her. So Eragon gives him his eyes back but still tells him that he can never interact with his daughter EVER, just see her from a distance.

Poor Sloan is just so happy to see his daughter be happy that he thanks Eragon for being a massive dickhead. Jeez, I felt sorry for him.

Well, I just placed my order on Amazon, and it should be here by Saturday. They've got it for $15, which is a good chunk off the normal price, so I figured I might as well. I'm tempted to do my own liveblog of my reading, too. Last time I just kept a log as I read.
