Is the trope about people who fake an excuse to look like they're in a relationship, or is the trope about people who fake a relationship to mask that their sexuality?

Yes. It's about claiming a relationship with a non-existent person to hide something.

I think it's more often about "to look like they're in a relationship" than actually hiding anything (well, beyond the fact that the girlfriend doesn't actually exist.) There are examples of both, though.

@Madrugada: To hide what? Just to hide anything, or to hide sexuality explicity?

To hide anything. It tends to be either a lack of a relationship, homosexuality, or the fact that a character is dating someone they shouldn't. All of those are the trope though.

Okay, because the current trope description seems to imply the "masking homosexuality" bit too heavily.
